  1. GreenEyed, I would like to make a signature like yours. Can you tell me how to do that please?
  2. Welcome! I wanted to apply to Annenberg but they were asking for a higher TOEFL score than I had, so I gave up.
  3. I feel the same about January, although I don't expect any decisions before February. Then again, who knows...
  4. Good point. I guess all we can do is wait. I moved to Chicago 9 months ago and I confirmed my previous belief that American education system is much better than Serbian.
  5. av2010 wow, lucky you! You must be American, right? I am from Serbia and I didn't have any help from my professors (not to mention one of them hardly knew how to send the LOR). Also, in my country students do their own research only on doctoral level, not before that. So BA and MA were just repeating what someone else wrote (sometimes even centuries ago). Now I'm even more scared I won't get admitted anywhere
  6. We will survive this, guys think happy thoughts! I visited Madison today, I had some free time and it's a two and a half hour drive from Chicago, where I live. The town looks really nice, although it was pretty much empty since it's winter break. I could imagine myself living there.
  7. DBear same here My draft list had around 50 programs, then I narrowed it down to 14 and finally to 7. I had the same criteria - as long as I found 2 members of faculty who I would like to work with, I applied. Not sure how can I know if I'm a good fit :-/
  8. My focus is on LGBT representation in the media, to be more precise - how does western media treat gays and lesbians compared to eastern media. I am originally from Serbia and you guys wouldn't believe what television and news websites do over there when it comes to disrespecting sexual minorities. Two of my best friends are gay so I'm interested in the topic but at the same time I am really worried I don't fit anywhere. I didn't find any faculty members whose research is in the same field. Some of them are focused on sexuality, but mostly on feminism and similar topics. As the time goes by I'm getting more and more worried, thinking I should have chosen another topic.
  9. Hi guys, I've sent my applications to Purdue, Chicago, Madison, Seattle, Davis and Santa Barbara. I will send one more to Minneapolis in the next 5-6 days and then the waiting game starts. Argh I just want to fall asleep and wake up in the end of February. I am so scared that I won't get admitted anywhere.
  10. GeekGirl hello and good luck with your applications. I was converting my GPA only when it was requested. In all other cases I would write "GPA 9.11 on the scale of 5 to 10".
  11. Thanks, good luck to you too! It would be great if we could both manage to get into Madison, that way I would know at least one person (online, but that's better than nothing, right?) Right now I feel so lonely in all this.
  12. DBear I know exactly how you feel Where did you live in US? I have managed to submit transcripts electronicaly, as a part of my online application for Madison, so I am a bit confused because you mentioned something about sending hard copies. My biggest concern regarding grad school is my English, which is not that bad (109 on TOEFL) but I'm worried that others might think that I am not educated enough due to my simple vocabulary. In my native language I sound much more educated and confident. That's why I feel weird when I'm talking to Americans, I feel like I am worth less than them, I don't know how to explain... Kirbs, can you tell me something about the campus, is it close to downtown and how is the public transport? I don't drive.
  13. I think it all depends on the other candidate's scores, but I would say your scores are pretty darn good I got 109 on TOEFL, 154 on Verbal, 154 on Quant and 4.5 on AWA.
  14. Hi DBear and Nika, are you applying for Communication Arts PhD at UW Madison? That is one of the seven places I am applying for. I am so happy I found this forum. I feel like I came from another planet. This is my eight month in the US and I am still adapting. That said, I know absolutely nothing about the education system here and my confidence regarding doctoral studies is pretty low. Anyone else in the same boat?
  15. Hi everyone, I am new to this forum but I hope I will be spending a lot of time here in the next 4-5 years (if I get admitted to one of the schools I applied for, that is). I am having trouble with my recommendation letters, too. One of my recommenders doesn't know how to fill out a pdf document, I have explained several times but he keeps opening the read only version and saving a blank document. It's sooo frustrating Today I found out that it's possible to fax the letter as well, so at least that's an option if it doesn't work out. I have applied to 7 schools so it has been a long process. I hope it will pay off. Good luck to all of you!
