3 of my schools typically send out decisions at the beginning of February. Anyone else eagerly anticipating/terrified of their emails?

Had an anxiety dream that a school required a writing sample in a specific doc type and, even though I followed their instructions to the letter, they couldn't open it and rejected me. Then there was a long email exchange about it with my past and potentially future professors...
This also included a lot of high school band class for some reason, listening to sports, a hunger games battle for farming communities trying to get water that year, monsters, and delicious food and restaurants that could only be found down back alleys. Oh, and flooding.Dreams are weird.

@katie64 I'm from California and only applied to one school in this state. I'm coming to the realization that there's a good chance I'll be moving somewhere with real seasons, haha.

lol @E-P I've been working on getting my health under control (33 lbs down so far), am creating a game, have been doing some readings from one of the programs fall classes, have looked at the schedule I would have for Fall at UConn, am doing job interview things several times a week, moderate a Twitch channel, am in 3 DnD type games (GM one, am a player in the other two), trying to stream on Twitch more often, and should be working on some writings (NCA conference paper submission, some geeky articles, and a couple things for publications).
In short, I know that feel, haha.
-
@E-P Yeah, I'm also in that unemployed camp, though I'm trying to get a job right now so I can pay off my student loans and afford the move. It would be nice to not go into higher debt so I can start school. x]
I'm still nervous about February though. I just want all the decisions in so I can accept a program and start planning the next few years of my life, haha.

Anyone else freaking out that February starts next week?

I'm not first generation, but both of my parents were. Mom got a master's and my sis and I actually got to see my dad's graduation from undergrad (he'd earned a couple associate's before that). My sis and I both have MA's (her's in psychology, mine in applied anthropology), so not sure if we're in the same direction as either parent (mom did her degrees in theater and dad in computer science). I am the first in my immediate family to get into a PhD though.

@Excelsior! Where is the funding coming from? TAship? RAship? Fellowship? This information would change the answer, though if it says "x amount annually" I'm inclined to assume it would be split over 12 months.
The funding from my current offer is a TAship so it's dispersed over 9 months. There are TAships available for the summer, but they are competitive and hard to get (fewer classes in the summer so fewer TAs needed). Luckily, my stipend is good enough to be just below what the minimum living wage is in the area, so if I work even a minimum wage job 1 or 2 days a week in the summer I'll more than make up the difference. Thinking about it, I might talk with my current remote job about writing my articles in the summer and having them post throughout the rest of the year.

@E-P I'm right there with you. I've been doing so many interviews. x] Was supposed to have a final interview for a job today, but it got rescheduled at the last moment (was literally in the parking lot when it got changed), so now I have two interviews on Tuesday. This week I've had two interviews and two writing exercises for jobs, plus an interview last week. Eventually I'll get hired, haha.

@surprise_quiche That's how I afforded doing my MA. I live in one of the most expensive rental markets in the USA so it just wouldn't have been possible without the free room and board (and lovely parents willing to lend me a car when needed).

To piggyback on @rising_star , I also take notes during interviews. I have a small notebook (fits in a purse so less awkward, yay) and ask if it's alright if I take notes before pulling it out. I also write some of my questions in the notebook before the interview so I can reference them at the end when they ask if I have any questions. If I have to look down, I make it clear that I'm still listening to what the person is saying (nodding my head or noises of understanding, if genuine, are good here). I might also star a note if I think of a question that I want to circle back to later. Generally, I focus on making the interview as much a conversation as possible while keeping my questions in mind so that I can make good transitions to get answers to my most important inquiries. If you're taking a bit longer to finish a note from the last thing they said, you can use transitioning language while you get those final words down (reference what they just said and add a personal comment and, if you can, turn this into the transition to your next question). Ex. That's an interesting point about x. I would have thought it would have been y. Since it is x, [insert next question here].

Was talking yesterday to a friend at one of the programs I applied to and she mentioned the faculty had a meeting that day and she thinks it was about applications. I was with my mom at the time so I mentioned it offhand. Well, first thing this morning, my mom is asking if I've heard from that program or any of my remaining programs yet. -__-
My dad has just taken to telling people it looks like I'm probably going to UConn. Don't get me wrong, absolutely love what I know of the program and people there and I'm visiting next week, but I don't want to make a decision until I know if I've received other acceptances and had a chance to visit those programs too.
-
If you happen to want to do this for Communication PhDs, that would be so amazing!
In any case, very interesting and nice to see visual breakdowns.

@sriracha18 congrats on the interview and waitlist (it's not a rejection yet, yay)! I had a very short follow-up email from my Madison interview (I sent them a thank you and some additional info I didn't remember to say when answering a question) and the prof said "we'll be in touch in the near future" so I'm currently overanalyzing that phrase, haha. From what I've seen, no one has been contacted for a second interview yet. x]

That sucks @surprise_quiche . Maybe you should call them about the issue?
-
For anyone who applied to Washington State, I got an email from a PoI that they're reviewing apps now.
-
Considering this was my first grad interview @twin35 ? I think it was pretty conversational, but the interviewer definitely had questions she wanted to ask (we talked about why I'm making the switch to comm, why I felt the rhetoric track was the best match, some of the theorists I pay attention to, etc).
-
@twin35 I did too. During my interview, the interviewer kept mentioning the MA/PhD rather than just the PhD so I guess they would make an internal deliberation about which is best based on your app?
-
All the freaking time @ms123456 . People always want to know what my top choice is, but I decided when applying I wouldn't make a top choice until I got the chance to visit whichever programs accept me.
-
I applied to the Rhetoric, Politics, and Culture track for UW Madison since I felt that this track was best for me in regards to methodology and faculty with similar interests.

@nushi If it makes you feel better, although I'm not moving to another country, I will be moving to a new state (never lived outside of my current state and only very briefly outside of my current city). Based on previous experiences, I'm probably gonna go through culture shock. Also, I have a history of forgetting to feed myself so I'm worried about living in a new state with no family around, all the normal problems that shift causes, plus starting grad school, plus trying to remember to feed myself.
In short, we're all in this together! *hugs*

@swaziboundcongrats! I got an email then a phone call, haha (received right before going into a final job interview, eek!). I'm super excited, but now I have to make a choice. x]
