  1. Out of upvotes but yes! We can just focus on deciding now maybe Villanova will finally get back to us on funding this week!
  2. I just got my rejection oh well. That was the last decision I was waiting on so at least this is over lollll
  3. Thanks for the insight; I hadn't thought of this and I think you're right. I have had some concerns about Villanova for a few reasons, and I was really happy to get another offer from one of my top choices (even though it was into the MA program). I will have to wait and see on funding, but I am definitely leaning towards Boulder!
  4. UGH, was starting to seriously consider Villanova and then I see that the other school that accepted me rose to 35 which is a significant change (I think it used to be 48 or 50). Rankings are bullshit, I'm not saying that they are everything, but it would be tempting to accept the offer from CU Boulder since they are evidently doing a lot right now that is reflected in the new rankings. Thank you @KikiDelivery for posting! :~)
  5. I am wondering if they have a waitlist for funding? I wonder how much longer they're making offers and why they are doing just a few a day if they've already made the admissions decisions (which I'm assuming they did in order to making funding decisions)
  6. This meme is perfect! I am so sorry though! also annoyed that Villanova hasn't emailed about funding
  7. Just want to say thanks - I am definitely using this outline to negotiate more funding with one of my offers!
  8. I am not sure but I think it's possible, as some MA applicants have already been admitted with funding. we'll see, I guess!
  9. I don't know if it's legit or not but someone posted on the board that they called U of Washington and the DGS said all the funded offers have gone out, but they're still making admissions decisions. Just thought I would let you guys know! I'm also still waiting :s
  10. Just got my rejection from U of Oregon. I am bummed because it was one of my "safe" schools (and an excellent program), but my application was very rushed and the program was not the best for me. I applied mostly for the location and the university, not personal fit (as I have learned - huge mistake!) Good luck to everyone still waiting!!!
  11. Congratulations!! I am also a BA applicant and am hoping to hear good news. My portal still only says submitted.
  12. I saw a few PhD acceptance and one MA on the board, but I haven't heard anything yet! Fingers crossed for you @Gray Under Gray; I hope we both hear good news!
  13. Wish I could up-vote because Great British Bake Off is life. Chopped is also a favorite in times of trouble but it was taken off Netflix :'(
  14. Does anyone want to claim the recent U Washington acceptances? Some are for PhD and I think one was MA with funding. That and Oregon are the only schools I'm still waiting to hear back from! Sorry to everyone else still in limbo and congratulations to the recent acceptances!!
  15. I am actually just speaking of the regular GRE; my subject scores aren't great but I am not too worried about those. My verbal score was in like the 80th percentile and I understand that's not really competitive, so I think I will definitely retake it this summer!
  16. This is how I'm feeling! I am trying to look at it positively because now I have the opportunity to apply to different programs that are probably a better fit anyway. I am still sad, but more and more I am a little excited at the fact that I get another chance to think about this and do it better. It can be exciting! Thanks for these super kind words.
  17. One of my letter writers said that after he was shut out his first year applying for PhD programs he was able to take graduate English courses at a local university while he reapplied. He said it was "transformative" and he was accepted everywhere he applied the following year! I'm not sure how taking grad classes works if you're not enrolled in the program, but I think it's definitely common! I wish I could do that but if I do end up taking next year off to reapply I will probably live at home and there isn't an English graduate program at the local university major bummer, but I might take a language course in Latin, which I think would ultimately benefit my application. Will definitely spend all summer studying for the GRE... the bane of my existence lol
  18. Yes, U of Oregon! My portal still says "pending" so I'm trying to keep hope ~semi alive~ Thank you for responding, and congratulations!
  19. I am curious - when did you reach out to POIs? Over the summer, or in the fall? If I go this route, I don't want to bother them by emailing at busy times, so I would assume summer might be better than early fall, but I could also see that being too early.
  20. I am also waiting to hear from Oregon, but I am pretty much counting it out at this point because I think they already sent all acceptances. Do they have an official waitlist? Do those who did hear from Oregon, did your portal change?
  21. THIS!!! Seriously. I thought I would be okay with a verbal score in the high 150s but I was so wrong. Obviously it wasn't the only factor in why I was rejected from top programs, but I think that if you have a good or even a great application with a sub par or "bad" GRE score, it will raise enough red flags for committees to safely reject you. I am going to work on raising my verbal score and also being more specific in my statement of purpose next time around. I did a very poor job of explaining my scholarly goals and research interests in my statements, and furthermore, did not apply to programs best suited for my needs. This was confirmed when I spoke to the DGS at CU Boulder yesterday who told me my statement was not specific enough for admission into a PhD program.
  22. I have been rejected from most of the schools I applied to and accepted to two MA programs but I just spoke with one of my professors and I think I am going to decline both of them (for a few different reasons that I won't get into here). I have some time to think about it, but I will most likely be applying again in the fall. I am majorly bummed but I think if I take the next 6 months to really focus on improving my statements and my GRE scores, I will (hopefully) have better luck next time. It sucks having to acknowledge that I am not going to be starting grad school in the fall, and will spend the year doing nothing substantial, and I am v sad. Am very sorry to everyone in the same position, and also big congratulations to those who were accepted.
  23. WOW I just received another offer from CU Boulder! They called me!!! They are unable to offer me admission into the PhD program (they only accepted 4 students) but would love to have me in the MA!!! Really thrilled; it was a nice phone call. First phone call of the admissions season and was really terrifying. Funding will be offered later.
  24. Thank you!!! It was a little cocky, honestly, because I am definitely not a perfect applicant, but I knew that I wanted to do it and my professors thought I had a solid chance, so I did it! I definitely don't have any regrets - it was a learning experience for sure. I honestly wish I had applied to more MA programs, but Villanova was the only one (it was the only one accepting applicants with funding considerations by the time I realized I fucked up lol). If I don't get funding, I will probably reapply next fall and include more MA programs. Thank you, though, and I'm glad that there seems to be a consensus! You guys have really cleared my mind :~~~)
  25. Yeah, I honestly feel silly for asking, but I had to know! I am also worried because I have heard from some people that Villanova has a relatively low placement rate for PhD programs, but I am not sure if that's true and I think it depends on on the individual applicant, as well. Thank you both for your answers!!! I will hopefully receive funding and enroll, so fingers crossed! One of the main reasons I asked is because one of my fav professors and letter writers told me not to take the MA and reapply to PhDs... I think he is a bit deluded because he thinks I am a great applicant but he had no problem getting into grad school (he went to Northwestern for his PhD) and maybe doesn't understand how truly difficult it has gotten, even for very good applicants.
