Anyone else cautiously observing the Iowa results? So far 2 people posted saying they got rejected, but I cannot help feeling anxious. Even after receiving acceptances the feeling never goes away! -
What was your writing sample?
KikiDelivery replied to Straparlare's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Thank you both! Yes, Octavia Butler is absolutely one of my favorite writers! I hope to continue exploring her works for my dissertation. I find the Parable series particularly relevant and urgent right now. -

Oh yes, they are both almost right next to each other from what I've heard! It would be exciting to meet people from CMU. I am sure there are lots of collaborations / opportunities between the two schools. -

My focus is contemporary, with an emphasis on queer, critical race, and ecocritical theory. Glad to have 3 Pitt acceptances on the board -

My writing sample is an excerpt from my thesis. I did a queer and ecocritical reading of Octavia Butler's Parable of the Talents, and how the novel challenges the construction of nature as heteronormative by centering queer liberation as part of climate justice. -

Congrats to everyone on their new acceptances! Also, apparently we made this thread "hot". Gotta love the community! -
I agree that most programs look at applications holistically. If I have to name my weakest link in my applications, I would certainly have to say my GRE scores. Yet, I've also received several acceptances. Stay calm, and if there are aspects of your application you can't change much, then work towards making other parts be stellar

From what I heard someone posting early could mean a lot of things! It may be that the acceptances are coming im waves, distributed based on research interest, or that the person got some sort of award and the program is therefore contacting them first. I say do not lose hope until you get an official email. -

I really thought this week was officially the calm before the storm. Late night Friday acceptances have proven otherwise! Congrats to everyone that received good news today -

So cool to have another ecocritic on the board! My ecocritical focus is contemporary, but it is exciting to see other ecocritics across disciplines. -
The Trump Effect
KikiDelivery replied to Dr. Old Bill's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Yes! The organization is called the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington according to several sources. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/ethics-group-suing-trump-conflict-interest-claims-article-1.2953205 I hope they win their case. I know many people fear Pence if Trump were to be impeached, but dealing with one is easier than dealing with both of them. -
Many of us may not have the privilege to partake in protest, but I've found that has helped me cope with anxieties I feel around the Trump administration. Also a good way to pass the time, meet some people, and wait for decisions.

The Trump Effect

I am terrified. Not only because of the state of the humanities per say, I knew that was already looking grim. I am talking about as someone as someone who is going to be severely impacted by some of his policies. I just feel like I do not have the energy to concentrate on my graduate studies right now with all the anxiety I am feeling.
