  1. It's my understanding that the internship MUST have a licensed Social Worker who is able to sign off on your experience at the placement to meet the requirements for CSWE accreditation.
  2. Hi there, it may be too late for my response but I will say I DID include my acknowledgement of privilege in my essays. My prompt was to write about working with individuals with different cultural backgrounds than myself and how this change my view. In my intro I acknowledged my struggles, but noted being a Caucasian, American born female has given me many privileges that I didn't realize did not exist for Latino immigrants who are undocumented until I started working with these families directly and seeing the fear and uncertainty they face when working with governmental agencies. This shows them you can practice humility, you desire to learn, and you recognize difference in power/privilege. To me, it is necessary to list at least once, somewhere, that you recognize privilege.
  3. How long did it take before you got an acceptance or denial? Did your school have rolling admissions or a deadline? Any insights are appreciated.
  4. Hi there, I think it depends on the school. At UNR they do strongly believe am undergrad student will better fit the msw program by going out in the field, working as a social worker, then applying for the MSW. However, for BSW students wishing to go straight through to MSW the deadline is January 15th, which means classes end late December. I don't imagine every student waits until the last week to turn their applications in and many are still accepted contingent upon their final posting grades.
  5. Hi there, Not sure if you already submitted your application. I don't have any clinical experience, so take what I say as you will. My experience is solely in child welfare, with my primary job being assessment, intervention and case planning. Assessment would include the clients needs. This should be in the form of a bio/psycho/social/spiritual evaluation. What behaviors does he have. Any medical concerns? What is his family make up? What are the presenting concerns? What are the barriers to change? There are many things to assess in order to know which interventions are necessary. Case planning includes the concerns to be addressed and the goals of intervention. Interventions will be your specific Interventions used to address concerns in the case plan. This needs to be measurable and have a specific connection to how the presenting concerns will be addressed. Evaluation is assessing if Interventions are achieving the case plan. How do you know the child is doing better? Have his out bursts decreased, thus promoting the amount of time he has in class and improving peer relations? Is he opening up more? Not sure what your case study prompt is but just make sure your evaluation is an assessment of how Interventions are impacting case planning and if they are effective. You will also reassess of any new needs have surfaced.
  6. It's been said already but if you don't want to become a therapist or mental health professional then the clinical route is not going to be the best option for you. To be honest, even if you chose an advanced generalist route you will be able to make your own opportunities. I have my BSW and am hoping to get into an advanced standing MSW program. I work for CPS and have recently found a need within my agency for a policy regarding how a workers caseload should be handled in the event they leave unexpectedly. There is nothing in writing and this has caused significant detriment to clients and to workers. I've indicated to my manager I want to take the lead on developing a policy for this specific event. In this case, that would be mezzo work. It is a policy change that impacts a larger group, but isn't necessarily a super large scale change. Ultimately you make your own opportunities and one of the best things I ever learned in my undergrad program is that the environment is full of resources. You just need to have determination, critical thinking and an open mind.
  7. Hey there, I know UNR offers an online generalist MSW and they do not offer specialized degreed outside of that. The short answer is, kind of. The BSW is training in generalist practice, which means you learn the basics skills needed to work with just about anyone and the MSW generalist practice is the same, but advanced skills. What you can do to gain special skills is: 1) put in for practicum/internship opportunities in a mental health setting 2) take electives specific for therapeutic interventions 3) volunteer in jobs that expose you to clinical practice and 4) network, network, network.
  8. Does your application packet require a resume? Include any trainings and volunteer experiences there along with work history.
  9. You can make any job relevant to social work. For example, I worked as a teller at a bank. This enhanced my abilities in listening, referring customers to products and services tailored to their needs, gave me skills in managing sometimes angry and hostile customers, etc. For clinical, I recently signed up to be a trauma intervention volunteer with TIPS in my area. Trauma is a very important aspect of clinical practice as a social worker and getting exposure and experience in that area will serve you well.
  10. It depends on the requirements of the program, I'd say. At my university there is a very specific track you MUST take if accepted. I applied to the 33 credit advanced standing program and it is a 1 year program. It is one semester of 16 credits and one semester of 17 credits.
  11. Something I heard long ago made a lot of sense to me... you shouldn't have student loans costing more than what you make yearly in a salary. This can obviously be impacted by if you are instate or out of state, but sticking to this principal will help keep loans manageable. I graduated my undergrad with $46k in student loans and ive been paying them about 3.5 years, and my one year masters program will likely cost about $11k.
  12. I believe this depends on where you live and if you are working for a governmental entity, non-profit, etc. I have my BSW and am licensed in my state as a social worker and just applied for the MSW advanced standing program for Fall 2017. When I just graduated I took a job with Division of Child and Family Services and made a net monthly income of about $2,200, which is a joke in my state/city. I took the same job but for my county and increased my monthly pay by almost double. Right now I make about $62,000/year with a bachelor's degree in social work as an investigative worker with CPS.
  13. I am new here. I just turned in my application at University of Nevada, Reno in the MSW, one year advanced standing program. I have my BSW from UNR as well and am a licensed Social Worker in Nevada.
