Just a reminder to everyone that there is always a chance, and to never give up  So this is my first time applying to a clinical program. I don't have any publications yet, I didn't go to any conferences, and my general GRE scores were not good. I applied to five universities around the Toronto area. For the past few months, I have not heard a thing from either university, and have only been getting rejection emails. In the beginning of April, to my surprise, I received an interview invite from a supervisor at York who I did not initially apply to. I was so excited to go to this interview, as I already thought there is no chance at this point in the year. Today I got officially accepted to the York Clinical program! I am still in shock, and so so happy!

I accepted my offer online. I think most schools have an online portal where you can see your application status and accept/decline offers. I also emailed my future supervisor, as well as the program administrator because that was requested in my acceptance letter. I don't think it's necessary to send a formal letter!

I think it is a pretty safe bet that you will get in. Only the Dean can officially accept students, but as long as you meet all the min. requirements it shouldn't be an issue.!

That sucks  I think you're definitely justified in asking when so many other programs have a later deadline... the common deadline for accredited programs was created to avoid this problem! And I don't know how they expect waitlisted people to make their decisions on such short notice.
Best of luck  Fingers crossed that it works out for you but if not, at least you have an acceptance in hand!

Thanks, friend! Yes, fully agreed regarding the accredited program deadline. And yes, I think the whole system is in a bit of a need for some reworking (as do many things relating to academia/research)

Yes, I know what you mean about the explicit message :/ Fingers super crossed that all of this just gets sorted out for us in the next day or two so that we can actually have a non-stressful long weekend!

I know right! I'm really apprehensive of asking for the extension as that explicitly sends the message to the second choice school that they are second choice =P But then again, those kinds of things are to be expected I guess and the schools must be used to it. My guess is that the logistics of giving everyone a "second" deadline are difficult to manage, but indeed you'd hope there would be a better system in place for people like us

I think the deadline for a lot of schools is actually April 18th, presumably because the 15th is a Saturday. Could this be the case for the school where you're accepted?

I'm in a very similar situation, and after thorough panicking throughout last week, I am thinking of asking for an extension as well... Though hsnl has a good point here, I think the deadline might be the 18th as well due to the 15th falling on the week-end. But then again I don't know if this will help us.

To the applicants who did not receive any offers from schools I understand your disappointment, frustration, and every other emotion you are are experiencing. This is my third year applying to schools. For the past two years I have been strictly applying to clinical psychology programs as that was always my goal. This year (third attempt), I decided to apply to counselling psychology with CPA-accredited PhD programs, as well as clinical psychology programs. I was shocked when I was invited to interview at New Brunswick for clinical psychology but did not pass the committee's final decision. However, I got accepted into two counselling psychology programs. I always thought that there was no other alternative besides pursing clinical psychology. However, I have learned that a PhD in a CPA-accredited counselling psychology program offers many opportunities and I will ultimately achieve the same goals but using a different path to get there. My advice to those who are considering applying again in the Fall, don't be afraid to consider other possibilities and keep trying because your perseverance will pay off in the end. Best of luck to you!

By the way, for you waitlisted people: Do not give up yet! It apparently can work

This is a good question. Would anyone be able to elaborate whether second/waitlist offers ever get some breathing room beyond April 15th? I ask as I have received an informal (still waiting for the letter) offer from my second-choice university (yay!) but am still holding out to be admitted off the waitlist for my first choice where I have already received SSHRC. The issue being of course that one would feel pressured to accept their existing offer prior to April 15th, even though they may not find out about their first choice until this date :/

I'm sure it just depends, but I have an anecdote - one of my POIs just let me know that she will give me a (presumably informal) heads up as soon as she knows about waitlist movement, but that it would be as late as April 15th since that's when people with first offers must respond by.

I would recommend you contact your POI and let them know. You're now a free student and I know of several people who were accepted in this backdoor way. If you were offered CGS, even if you were rejected by the school, contact your POI and let them know. It could change things. CGS and acceptance are usually done by separate committees.

A lot of alternates move up! I got offered the award at all my schools and will obviously only accept 1, so 2 will be given to alternates! I have also been told you can ask where you are on the list as well so you can get an idea of whether you will end up getting funding in the end! Fingers crossed it works out!

I totally understand how you feel and it's common to a lot of us.  I think the best thing you can do is to apply everywhere you can think of (and figure out how to get there later).  That way you can be rejected 30 times or 50 times instead of just once hahahaha!  Seriously though, you have nothing to lose by applying and I would be looking at places that may have a quota of mature age students to fill (if you fit into the demo).

I have a blog for my psychology studies here in Australia and some of the papers may be of interest to you, also if you have old papers lying around then I'd be happy to host them on my blog (with all credit going to you of course).  I figure that I've already done the work so I may as well put it out there!

Kind of an unexciting answer, but just working and finishing up a potential 2nd publication to improve applications next year if not admitted on this first go-around (aiming to get it submitted by the end of March so that if I am not accepted, I'm not too de-motivated to finish it). Sort of comforting to know I'm still improving my chances next year.
All of that, and copious amounts of heroin of course.

I'm assuming other people got an email this morning saying their CGS M application status had changed, only to enter the portal and find that everything is the exact same? >:(

I'm not sure I would say it's more or less likely for them to accept it. If they're holding on to it, then it's likely they have a more preferred school and haven't been accepted there yet (or are waiting for funding info). So, they keep their current offer as a backup plan, but don't want to jump the gun. If they've got multiple offers, then one would hope/think they would decline all but the best offer they've received so far.
I'm also in the wait-list boat (looks to be my only shot), but I generally wouldn't expect to know your fate until April, unfortunately. That's when funding information will be released, and when people will need to start making final decisions on their offers, so there will be a lot of shifting around in terms of wait-lists/offers - hopefully enough to push us to the front of the line!
