  1. I'm definitely biased, because I accepted an offer from this school, but Arizona State. It doesn't have an official WPA option, but there is plenty of opportunity to work with Shirley Rose and help run the university's giant writing program.
  2. I'm going to throw in German as a suggestion. I don't know much about German fiction of the era, but I know that there was frequent and important exchange of ideas between England and Germany. And if you want to delve into the areas around the Victorian era for contextualization purposes, the German Romanticists set some precedents. Disclaimer: I'm not a Victorianist.
  3. I was on the wait list at Ohio State for Rhet/Comp, but I've accepted my offer from Arizona State, so I removed myself. Ohio State's wait list is interest-based, so if anyone else is into post-process writing in online spaces, you've got one less person to compete with over the next 3 days.
  4. I just accepted my offer from Arizona State University!!
  5. I don't think anyone here is on the wait list at Kent State, but I'll post anyway: I just declined their offer this morning.
  6. Thanks for your congrats! Yes, I'm really excited--I've already Google Maps'ed the entire campus. Currently in southeast Texas--which is almost as hot and twice as humid. I'll be alright!
  7. Yayayayaya! I've been accepted at Arizona State! Matched with my dream advisor and got a pretty decent funding package.
  8. Congratulations! One of my very good friends at Sam Houston just accepted a position there as well. So you're in great company!
  9. Hi! My Master's Comps were a little different (6-hour essay exam in three different content areas), but I think that my advice is still relevant. What helped me the most was studying the theoretical underpinnings of each movement within my content area. That way, no matter what I was asked, I would be able to contextualize my answer within those theories. This strategy helped me the most in my 20th century content area. Rather than starting with modernist texts, for example, I went straight to the thinkers that the Modernists read: William James (subjectivity of time/space), Frank Boaz (anthropology/primitivism), Einstein (relativity), etc. Similarly, authors' comments on their own works were also really helpful, because they often 1) explain their works, and 2) explain their contemporaries' works. I got much more prep out of reading Langston Hughes' essay "The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain," for example, than reading any one of his poems. TLDR: Go for theoretical underpinnings and authors' essays on their own philosophies. Hope this helps!
  10. Goddangitt, guys. ASU is all like "We have an amazing FYC program--hybrid courses, stretch courses, advanced courses! And Shirley Rose is here! Teaching here would be lovely." But now that I'm waiting on news, they're all like "-----------." But congrats to all of you on your newest acceptances! Especially you FSU folk! I missed that deadline, and I've kicked myself every day since.
  11. Thanks for the welcome and the congrats! I'm the only Rhet/Comp person at my current school, so I'm always glad to see more, too. I'm going to keep prying--do you know if that person had been accepted in ASU's Literature or in Rhet/Comp program? The only results posted on the Results page are for Lit. I feel so antsy always. It's nice having an acceptance under my belt, though, since it means that I know I'm going somewhere. Edit: I made it sound like I wasn't ecstatic about my offer from Kent State. I am! I'm dying to work with my POI there!
  12. Hello, all! I've been lurking for the past few days; I wish I'd known about this place earlier! So I have good news, bad news, okay news, and questions. Good news: I was accepted at Kent state with full funding on Monday! Bad news: I was rejected by Michigan State a while back (expected). Okay news: I'm on the wait list at Ohio State. I know some others are, as well. Here's to hoping that everyone ahead of us got offers that were better for them! Question: Has anyone heard from Arizona State (Rhet/Comp)? I've been checking their website every hour for the past week. I've developed a twitch. BTW, after combing through your descriptions of your writing samples, I've had quite the flair-up of imposter syndrome. Quick, someone tell me I'm valuable!
