MFA 2018 All Art ADMISSIONS freak-out forum!!!!!!!!

Hello All! Since we're inching towards the end of this journey, I thought I'd share a tiny anecdote. I never went to art school and have been following this community for two years, hoping to apply fr an MFA etc each year, to see the community be there when you're anxious af, and this year I did find the courage to apply. I applied to 7 places, have been rejected by two so far, and checking this forum has become a ritual. I don't know what the future holds in store but from being a passive observer to a participant in this process has in it's way been a moment of growth for me. I hope each one of us gets accepted to the school right for us, and I wish you all a tremendous amount of success in the years to come. Love- 2,162 replies

Don't think about it this way. A college with a smaller acceptance rate might think your work fits there better. I wish you the best- 2,162 replies

Hey! The anticipatory anxiety is terrible. The reality of rejection, worse. The truth is, we're all going to feel this is the end of the world. Applications take a lot from us, but they give you a sense of clarity. Polishing your statement of purpose is just another way of articulating your dreams and demons better. Another part of the aforementioned truth, the more important part rather, is that it isn't the end of the world. Would you stop writing if you didn't get accepted? Was writing conditional to acceptances to institutions? I doubt it. It's bloody difficult, but trust me, things work out. I wish you the best and hope to hear some good news from you

Hey, I'm currently pursuing an MFA in India. I'm in my first year but really really really keen to study in the States, not art schools but universities that offer interdisciplinary MFA programs because I hold a bachelors in liberal arts. Was thinking of applying to UPenn and Cornell. any suggestions?- 9 replies

MFA 2017 All Art ADMISSIONS freak-out forum!!!!!!!!

hi Yetti, What did you major in? I want to do it the right way. In the sense, it doesn't matter if I don't have an MFA as long as I get the clarity and skill set along with artistic maturity. What I'm doubting is whether art is what I want to go all out for, and whether I have it in me to be an artist and lacking is conviction. I wasn't sure about doing another BFA, rather doing another BA. But I've done two liberal arts degree from India, and pretty much explored everything there was to except for art history and lietrature (in depth) as opposed to the other subjects that I studied. Not sure if MFA is in the cards. It's a choice between a post bacc year long degree or 4 years of undergrad.- 2,106 replies

Hey Vespertine, I like being in the creative space but I felt I wanted something more challenging to chew on. I don't think I'm ready for graduate school, I want to learn more before a level of independence is expected from my work. I was honestly more focused on getting the undergrad experience that apparently shapes you brilliantly, not seeing it as a route to another degree, but maybe give more clarity. But I already have 2 liberal arts degrees from India, so I was being advised that my tendency to explore will be limited because I have done that already. I was looking at post bacc programs, but some are saying that a year won't be enough, and it'll be a compromise.- 2,106 replies

Hey, I never went to art school for my undergrad and was considering applying for an MFA this year. I was torn between doing a second undergrad this time in visual arts or applying for a masters? How did the BFA help you, was the learning mostly skill based or was it more to do with developing the thoughts that go in the process? I'm really confused.- 2,106 replies

Thank you Gwhar1! I did look up Post-Bacc programs, but you rightly guessed it's very costly. I can't afford both, an MFA and a post bacc. Your points have been very helpful- 2,106 replies

Thank you Vespertine! I am trying to go through as much student work I can to assess whether or not I should apply. Apart from reading up on reviews, I haven't been able to find any essays that might help me convey the turmoil in my statement of purpose. How does one even write an SOP? Would you recommend interning with artists, or galleries etc?- 2,106 replies
