Thats such a sweet thing to say. Honestly. I should caveat all of that by saying I am in my mid-thirties and all of that took time. I started by undergrad at 25 after a tough youth. I want a PhD to lead my own research. I am chronically applying for grants for other people, and ignoring the gaps I experience. I love my life though and am able to wait another year. But thought I would chime in to say even us oldies (with lots of experience!) are having a tough time. In a field where everyone is superstars, the stars need to align with a small dose of luck

What is the Columbia Global Health & Humanitarian program? Sounds interesting. Rutgers sounds amazing too.

I also had poor luck this year. I also don't know how to make myself a stronger applicant, maybe just time and a dash of luck...I too have many first author pubs (some in Lancet, JAMA etc..) Am a country rep to the WHO, have ++ years research experience, have a 10-year annual charity thing that I love and am a clinician! I aimed high but didnt even get interviews anywhere!  Ive also been told theres alot that goes on behind the scenes. For example, funding etc... Oh well, another year without any crazy responsibilities I suppose!

Also a tough youth and didn't start my undergrad until 28. Then did that and 2 masters, now I'm 41. When I was a little kid I wanted a doctorate, but as life unfolded I thought maybe it wasn't actually in the stars for me. Now I get to start one next year. These milestones are really hard for those of us who had to start things later and without any support! But even at 41 to know I get to start the next step, it's incredible. Us "oldies" should get extra credit for still pushing forward. ?

I just want to say you're everything I want to be. I'm going to a PhD program so that one day I could be at a position you're at right now. You don't need a doctoral degree to prove how amazing you are. You're already a superstar!

Wohoo I’ve been accepted to JHU for DrPH in health equity and social Justice. This is the only school I applied for. I appreciate having this forum as a community in this journey.

You are so right! You clearly have a stellar CV and experience.  I think it's unfortunate they clearly have some kind of screening in place since they don't interview most applicants. I understand that some tracks just don't accept as many students, and they want to round out their cohorts with different types. This was just yet another crappy year to apply it seems - going into the third year of the pandemic, crazy inflation, etc. that has resulted in yet another record breaking year in sheer number of applicants.
I hope you get accepted into another stellar program this year, or consider applying next year! It's clear you are already a real public health leader. You deserve the credentials to match .

Same. I led the Epi department for 3 Manhattan hospitals through the epicenter of COVID, authored an infection control textbook chapter, multiple publications, significant community volunteer assignments since 2011. I don’t know what else I can be doing to make myself a better applicant?

Thanks! I didnt. It was an editorial that sort of came up after the deadline. I sent an email to the program admin. No harm will likely get the response below.
Thanks so much for the intel! I sent the program admin an email. I imagine I will get the same response. Did you apply for Health Policy? I havn't heard anything yet and starting to make me sad.... (oh well, such is life!)

I’ve been accepted to SFU Population Health and to McGill MScPH. I’ve currently accepted both offers but if I’m accepted off the UBC MPH waitlist I will likely choose to accept it and then withdraw from my other offers. If I don’t get into UBC I guess I’ll decide between moving out east, or attending SFU. Personally I think the program at SFU looks amazing but having done my undergrad there I would prefer a change of scenery.
