  1. Thats such a sweet thing to say. Honestly. I should caveat all of that by saying I am in my mid-thirties and all of that took time. I started by undergrad at 25 after a tough youth. I want a PhD to lead my own research. I am chronically applying for grants for other people, and ignoring the gaps I experience. I love my life though and am able to wait another year. But thought I would chime in to say even us oldies (with lots of experience!) are having a tough time. In a field where everyone is superstars, the stars need to align with a small dose of luck
  2. What is the Columbia Global Health & Humanitarian program? Sounds interesting. Rutgers sounds amazing too. I also had poor luck this year. I also don't know how to make myself a stronger applicant, maybe just time and a dash of luck...I too have many first author pubs (some in Lancet, JAMA etc..) Am a country rep to the WHO, have ++ years research experience, have a 10-year annual charity thing that I love and am a clinician! I aimed high but didnt even get interviews anywhere! Ive also been told theres alot that goes on behind the scenes. For example, funding etc... Oh well, another year without any crazy responsibilities I suppose!
  3. Thanks! I didnt. It was an editorial that sort of came up after the deadline. I sent an email to the program admin. No harm will likely get the response below. Thanks so much for the intel! I sent the program admin an email. I imagine I will get the same response. Did you apply for Health Policy? I havn't heard anything yet and starting to make me sad.... (oh well, such is life!)
  4. Question, if I had a pub come out today in a big medical journal (editorial not original research) that was not included in my application, would it be worth sending to the school? I am waiting for Harvard Policy. I already list like 14 pubs I think but this one is also noteworthy.....
  5. Did you have your interviews yet? That does seem like a good sign!
  6. Nice! Congrats. Mind if I ask you your stats? Curious to the backgrounds
  7. Following this! Nervous about these interviews going out now. Havnt heard anything from the Methods stream.
  8. Good luck! Longterm lurker on Canadian scholarships. Masters student right now (CIHR CGS M funded). Will apply for Trudeau/Vanier next year for doctoral studies! Best of luck and appreciate any tips or learnings alogn the way.
  9. Adelaide, Congrats on Vanier. I would love to hear more about your learnings in applying for this award, especially as a PhD incomer (if I am understanding correctly?)
  10. Any word on UBC? I got my acceptance two weeks ago. I didnt actually even apply at SFU or McGill but when I saw your post I checked out their programs. They both look amazing. McGill has some interesting opportunities and sometimes I think UBC is over-hyped (even if I did accept my offer :P)
  11. I just got accepted off of UBC MSc. Waitlist! Accepted the offer! Super excited, definetly chalked that one up to a refusal!
  12. I also did! What are the odds of getting in? I asked the program admin and she said she wouldnt know until around May.
  13. Me too! Sorry to hear this Should we start at 2019 thread..... Ugh, not sure if I will apply there again. Second year in a row. (Sidenote, I had a professor who got declinded from UBC but got into Yale....)
  14. I just heard from UBC MSc in Pop. Public Health. Waitlisted! Probably taking this as a no.... Ugh, so gutted. Apparently having a supervisor, funding, and two years as a research assistant as a lead on a national health canada project doesnt help very much. I dont know if I will apply again to UBC after all this.
  15. Which policy programs did you apply to? I also am interested in this and might pursue this next year if I do not get into UBC again.
  16. Me too! Which UBC program did you apply for? Have you emailed them to inquire?
  17. Best of luck to you too! May is SO long! But makes sense why i got my rejection in April. MSc is interesting but quantitatively based therefore not sure if I will get in. I actually have a grade below the requirement but hoping my experience, supervisor and interests make up for it. Or perhaps enough that they offer me conditional upon completion of another stats course. Who knows! If I dont get in this year, will think about taking the GRE
  18. I applied for the MPH last year but my application was super weak... Didn't spend alot of time on the letter of intent etc... Through some experience in the public health/health promotion world I was able to focus on a research based program vs. a practice based one (MPH). But yes, April is SO far away! Hoping the MSc sticks to the timeline. What does it say for MPH? Do you have a supervisor?
  19. Which program did you apply for? I also only applied for 2 programs at UBC. I kind of wish I diversified a bit as I have been rejected from one. I applied to the MSc in Pop. and Public health. Really putting the eggs in one basket here :(!
  20. Can I ask a bit more about your background and application process? This program interests me. I am Canadian and funding would be a major obstacle here.
  21. Any chance to know more about your background? I am a Canadian resident but always tossing the idea around to apply to the states...Also, congratulations!
  22. The waiting for UBC is tough. I think last year I heard (rejected) in April. Hoping this year is different.
  23. I am sure you do It's so tough out there right now and I know UBC can be challenging to get into. Feedback would be nice but we will see. Have not heard anything yet... Hoping the next application is successful, if not I will take another year off, get more experience and perhaps think about applying elsewhere!
  24. Absolutely! I completely respect the decision but after spending 4 months writing that letter (including extremely positive feedback from the dean of the school), I was quite shocked. Hoping I might get feedback on why the decision was made but until then, fingers crossed for the MSc. Thanks for your insight!
  25. I just got an email of rejection from UBC MA in Interdisiciplinary (where I applied to do it in conjunction with SPPH). I am a bit taken back as I also applied for their MSc in Population and Public Health but the odd's might be low for that program as it in very quantitatively based and I feel as though my background does not lend itself to it. But we will see, fingers crossed. Background -3 years health promotion/public health Ieading a national project around changing Canadian legislation -Nursing degree (3.9 GPA) -Two supervisors who have guaranteed me funding and a position/office in their research centre -Well written proposal inwhich both supervisors said was PhD level -My stats course is a grade below the requirement therefore I think UBC will hone in on this but hoping they see all the other qualifications and make a rounded decision.... but who knows -Presentations, publications, experience writing a nursing course module for a government body. I am honestly shocked about the MA... The requirements are so much lower! Geez, what does it take to get into school these days?!
