Anyone heard from UBC yet?! Did anyone apply for the fellowships/scholarships. I think the deadline on that is Ap.1 so if attached to a program I imagine would have to wait until then....

Anybody heard from UBC yet? The website says students will be notified in Feb or March. I applied for the MSc in Population and Public Health. Hoping to have gotten in despite a lack of quantitative research experience. We shall see!

Anyone planning on applying to the MSc in Population and Public Health at UBC? I am not applying to the MPH for lack of thesis based program and research centred (I want those experiences as a masters student). I have a below-accepted quantitative background a B instead of a B+ which is required (due to personal reasons during my undergrad stats course-bummer!). But hoping strong references, a supervisor, funding, and hired into a research project will make up for it. Hoping they offer conditional acceptance upon redo of a stats course! #fingerscrossed

This is really interesting. I didnt know this re: MscPPH. I am more interested in academia/research prject in lieu of practicum. At the research institute I work at now, we have students come through on rotation- some good, some not so good. Last year I applied to UVIC/UBC. Both denied at both of them. I am not surprised. My letter of intent was weak and I was a new grad straight from nursing school, with little experience. This year I will be applying as having 2 years experience, one year as a research assistant on a big health canada project and a more straight forward goal. I am looking at the Canadian Graduate Scholarship now. May apply for that - looks like you can apply pre-acceptance or rather on condition of acceptance.

I second this inquiry. This may sound like a stupid question, but how (and where) can you apply for funding/bursaries/scholarships ahead of the program? Or are you automatically considered for one upon entry to certain programs? I have always wondered this.

Hi! I am so happy you started this thread. I am applying to the following schools for 2018: UBC MSN/MPH UVIC MPH SFU MPH What is the major difference between the MPH and the MSc PPH at UBC? Seems the MSc is more data driven? Not sure. I have a BSN but only worked clinically for 2 months before starting fulltime as a research assistant through uvic. I also have side gigs writting curriculum for nurses as well. Hoping that my experience this year helps with my admissions. I didn't get in last year but after one year of extra experience, my CV has changed drastically and is more research orientated. What is your area of interest? Excited!

Global Health Policy- London School of Hygiene
vancouverrunner replied to vancouverrunner's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Thank you (both) for the response. My goals are to work internationally but am currently in a two-year contract with a research institute here around the cannabis legislation change here in Canada. My goals are to work in policy but infuse aspects of my research (more around philosophical concepts such as empathy) into policy. I like how LSHTM distance program allows you to start the program here, and then do blended learning (where you would go to London and study). I asked this question because sometimes I am wary of an online/distance program but as you stated above, LSHTM is very well regarded and established. I am seeing most MPH/GHP programs move online as I search around me. I was also thinking I could work the next 2 years to build my resume and try to apply abroad with a scholarship (I may be competitive after this experience). As for graduation options, it seems most graduates move into places such as WHO or the UN. But I am sure that varies. Thank you for your responses!- 4 replies

HI all, Does anyone have any insight into the London School of Hygiene in Tropical Medicine's Global Health Policy program? I have done my research and was actually accepted into the program. It is entirely through distance education with an option to go to London and study at the school for a 6 week blended-learning option. There is an option for a project at the end, otherwise known as a thesis. I work full-time as a research assistant so this masters would allow me the time to build my professional career as well as my academic. Apparently, LSHTM has an outstanding reputation and I have spoken with a wide representation of people who have all pretty much regarded the program to be high. My worry is about the potential for networking through distance education. Also, is there any stigma associated with a distance masters degree? There isn't much in terms of funding through distance education but the price tag isn't too hefty. I really like the international perspective, without having to leave for too long. Also, their connections to the UN, WHO etc... In the global health/policy world, how is LSHTM regarded? Should I hold out to apply to other schools next year? Thanks ahead for reading this!

You may want to look into London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. They offer distance programs as well.

This is crazy! They told me at the latest April 10... LOL Let me know what they said. I am tempted to call....
-
UVIC is taking forever. I submitted my application Dec19!

Did you think about London School of Hygiene and Trop. Medicine? They also have a really good online distance program! And a blended learning option where you can study in London for 2 months and take the required courses.
-
Anybody heard from UVIC? Every day is nerve racking!

I emailed them again today with the risk of being annoying but maybe I'm wait listed or something? I have a feeling they are just slow. Its been 4 months since i submitted!!

Still waiting on UVIC.... Anyone thinking of distance LSHTM?
-
Have you decided between Global Health and MPH? I applied to the MscPh via LSHTM thinking that the MPH would be more universally recognized but at the same time, I havnt really looked into what you can do with a Masters of Global Health. Are they regarded the same? I like the idea of global health as I believe there are no borders when it comes to public health.
-
Congrats! They must be going through the applications now.I didn't apply to a certain stream with hopes to decide in the future.

I applied in December and got an offer for the MscPh distance program via LSHTM. It is inciting... I like the idea of an international perspective and learning outside of a country you live in. Blended learning option is really inciting as well. Where did you apply? General thoughts of the distance program?

Seconding this! I also am waiting for UVic....

Hi all, Currently wondering about the MScPh program via Distance offered by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine? Anyone have any insights?
-
Wow, this is so timely response actually. I got rejected from UBC this am, which I am kind of not surprised about. My stats courses are lower than a B+, which I was obviously would be overlooked due to my high GPA. Since applying, I have been working as a research assistant in the field of public health and health promotion and often thought I would have done my application completely different if I had to redo it again. I have been accepted to LSHTM MScPH via distance. This may be my back up if UVIC doesnt work out. Anyone have any experience with LSHTM?
