  1. @DGrayson it's not completely silent. Either eighteen decisions today or reported today.
  2. Hang tight. In the meantime, have a chuckle over at the lego grad student website to ease your waiting anxiety.
  3. That's definitely true. 60K is barely manageable for a lower-middle-class lifestyle in the outer boroughs of NYC after taxes--without roommates. To live in Manhattan in the same lifestyle one has to earn 80-90k, but this means very little savings.
  4. Yeah, arcane and ancient. Something the free-masons thought of. The password is swordfish from the Marx Brothers. But to enter the portal just say swordfish from Karl Marx. That's the secret.
  5. Thanks. You're always welcome to peek in the History forum if you so desire.
  6. I spend almost as much time here as I do in the history forum. Maybe I should apply for a combo History-English Phd? Oh wait, I think it's called American Studies. I knew I should have been more open-minded.
  7. Someone posted this on another GC subforum. Thought it was pretty funny. Think it's time for a little levity to assuage our waiting anxiety: https://legogradstudent.tumblr.com/ This is one of my favorites: " Leading undergrads in a discussion about readings that he barely managed to skim, the grad student flagrantly abuses the Socratic method."
  8. Coca, it's already Saturday EST. How are you doing?
  9. Totally agree. If I was younger and willing to move away, I would have cast a much wider net and probably would have applied to at least a dozen programs, even to a few top ones. But the reality is my age at the present, and I had to stretch the geographical limit to include Temple and UConn. If I don't get accepted to any of the four programs closer to home and were admitted to either Temple or UConn then going home on weekends is quite doable.
  10. I really enjoyed that movie when it first came out, saw it twice in the theater. Looks like Minnesota is sending out rejections in batches, saw several more a few minutes ago. Doctoral programs are a crap-shoot, so many qualified applicants for so few places.
  11. I agree with @Averroes MD that the email is well written, with an encouraging tone. Sending you good vibes for a positive outcome.
  12. I wouldn't be sarcastic if I were you. Academia is small and it may come back to haunt you, especially at professional events.
  13. I'm surprised to see a decision so early, especially a waitlisted one. I'm currently an MA student at one of the CUNY colleges and all my professors teach at the PhD level at the GC. Based on what I heard and from past practices, I wasn't expecting to see decisions for a couple more weeks at least.
  14. Good for you and your uncle. I almost applied to UMass but decided I didn't want to stray too far from home.
  15. Wow, you have a family of middle-age overachievers. You must be proud of them all. I hope to gain membership in that company.
  16. Let's see: California nice weather almost all the time, Ohio it's so freaking cold or so freaking hot. But seriously, both states have good and bad.
  17. Even better if you could program your phone to light up and play Slumdog Millionaire. Then you can get up and do the Bollywood mojo. Hehe.
  18. Ah, a family. Okay. Good course of action. I'm a nontraditional, older applicant as well. I don't need to teach, but I need and want the cred to write peer-review articles and monographs. If law school is in your future, I hope you enjoy it more than me. I went for a year, but after three days in law school I knew I didn't want to be an attorney. Good luck with either path you choose for next year.
  19. Yes, but there are still some places that have scholars in that area. It's not my field but in NYC I know NYU has a scholar that researches in early transatlantic Dutch history. Oh, I almost forgot that I said not to make a hasty decision because you wrote that you'll take a few days to figure out what you wanted to do, but that's probably because of the initial disappointment.
  20. Congrats. Now on to the next level.
  21. So sorry. I know you really wanted this since it was the only place you applied. I think you should take longer than a few days to decide on plan B, since there's no pressing deadline for law school yet. The university may decide to hire someone to take the place of the retiring professor. In any event, what I'm saying is don't make a hasty decision when you don't need to do so.
  22. How about some French filmmaker doing a version of "Gone With The Wind." French dialogue with a Southern accent, hmm, maybe not.
  23. I think they mean per year: $22k + tuition (and maybe fees). Otherwise, entire package should be several hundred thousands.
