  1. Amen to that!
  2. I feel for that person if it's true.
  3. A HUGE CONGRATS TO YOU BOTH! My words ring true when I said your husband had as good a chance as any to get into an Ivy program.
  4. Hi Imenol. If you don't mind room/apartment sharing and you don't have an extravagant lifestyle then it's a very livable stipend. If you've already decided on attending look into both on campus/off campus housing with the University's facilities/housing office.
  5. I really miss those guys.
  6. Congrats to you. Now we are SB triplets! Lol. Quadruplets anyone?
  7. Congrats to you too! I'm leaning toward attending but probably won't decide for another week. How about you?
  8. I posted this on the 2018 Admissions, decisions...thread but decided to post here as well since there's more traffic, especially if anyone is waiting to hear from these programs. Good luck to everyone on their remaining decisions. "I finally received two more decisions: in at Stony Brook and out at Temple. SB emailed and Temple sent a postal letter. The ironic thing is I received Temple's rejection first and five minutes later I read SB's acceptance email. It's good to know I have at least one acceptance for now, with three more decisions pending."

  10. @Ragu responded while I was typing. Lol.
  11. I've researched a good number of history PhD programs in the U.S. and the only program that comes to mind is Northwestern. They don't require the GRE but it's still a very competitive program. You didn't indicate your primary and secondary fields of interest, so assuming they are U.S. and Britain, Northwestern doesn't require a foreign language for Americanists but do require one for British History. There may be a few other programs in the U.S. similar to NW, but I don't know of any more. As Narple suggested look into European programs to bypass the GRE and I would add Canada as well, but that doesn't help you with the foreign language requirement.
  12. I've found Rampolla good for mechanics but weak as a research guide. I'm currently using The Craft of Research to structure my MA thesis. It's loaded with good suggestions that I hadn't even pondered with long research papers.
  13. Congrats! Excellent program.
  14. Penn is one tough nut to crack but you did it. Congrats!
  15. I just looked at today's results. A Columbia bloodbath day for both History and Art History. I feel bad for all the rejects.
  16. Lol. I essentially did the same with my SOP, except that I led off with a quote.
  17. I didn't apply to NYU but one of my MA cohort did and received a rejection last week.
  18. Congrats! Looks like when the smoke clears you'll have quite a few options to choose and decide on the winner!
  19. W. Cronon is a giant in U.S. environmental history and great writer to boot.
  20. Congrats on your defense and my fingers are crossed on Ithaca.
  21. One of my favorite classes was taught by a Lecturer, who is a great teacher. I called him Professor when I was in his class, and still call him the same whenever I see him now. He deserves my respect and I'm sure he appreciates it.
  22. Maybe many programs are now realizing it's especially cruel to send declinations on St Valentine's day. Just a thought. I received two decisions yesterday, one good and one bad, which I'm sure was decided either last week or early this week. They could have been emailed just as easily on Valentine's day, but I got them a day later.
  23. I see initial action with Rutgers and UConn, so maybe more decisions forthcoming in the next few days.
  24. In that case, every reject deserves sainthood and should immediately be admitted into Harvard's divinity school.
