First of all 100% in the same boat with having a hard time focusing/staying motivated at work right now. This process is so grueling and going through it during all the current contexts just makes everything so much more difficult and heavy. Everyone reading this please be gentle with yourself and practice what we hope to preach. Prioritize self care right now.

I just want to chime in that if this is truly what you want to do, do not give up. I was in the same place this time last year during my second cycle. Truly feeling as though I could not bear this process again; emotionally, financially, all the things. A year later and I feel SO grateful that things didn't work out the way I had hoped/expected last cycle. On my third cycle now I feel so much better prepared (mentally, skills-wise, more focused on my goals for grad programs and beyond) and this year I have SO many more options on the table (4x as many invites for fully funded programs) including my top choice program I've been trying to get into for years.

I know it is so hard in this moment, and backup plans just don't feel like they can stack up yet start to feel like the only option, but if you truly want to pursue this field in this way do not lose hope. If you have to reapply next year inquire about application fee waivers and other financial resources, this really helped me this year. It is easy to feel like life is flying by and that taking another year will be a "waste of a year" but that extra year can be so formative if you make it and can lead to even better opportunities the next cycle.

I agree with this 100%. My first application cycle, I applied to 12 programs. And I was rejected from all but one, which was unfortunately a poor fit for myself and my wife. With much more preparation, I’ve had a better go around this time. I fully echo everything that rainbow is saying, think creatively about how you can get involved. Not just with students but with the professionals, volunteers for APA committees, explore the different webinars for networking, etc.

Has anyone heard from the Counseling PhD programs at Maryland (College Park), Lehigh, Univ of Tennessee (Knoxville), or Colorado State? I feel like i’ve seen the occasional chatter about Tennessee and Lehigh but can’t tell if they’re done extending invites

I’ve heard back from Maryland and UTK in December.

For any other University of Florida (UF) counseling psychology applicants- I spoke with one of the admission peeps! Basically said they had over 600 applicants this term and they’ll probably be sending out the rest of the invites between the next two weeks! Keep your hopes up!

Thanks for the update! I’m too nervous to reach out to my contact for updates, I almost feel like bothering folks makes me feel like little Timmy. “Please sir, an update please”

  4. Hey folks,

With the understanding that not all folks within this forum are living in the U.S., I just wanted to share love and support for those who are challenged and impacted by the events occurring in DC. I hope everyone is finding a moment for wellness and respite right now. Please be kind to yourself, especially while we are still undergoing the admissions process amidst all of the madness.

Is anyone else severely struggling a lot more than they thought they would with this process...? I was fine when I submitted them, and up to about two weeks afterwards, but I am not fine now! I am truly happy for everyone here and am excited for the next generation of mental health professionals and researchers. Yet I have 0 invites. I am trying not to get down, but I did not anticipate just how terrible I would feel for the holidays. My grad student mentor said to take time for myself and my family. It's hard :(

Don’t worry about hearing back already! Most programs interview in February, at least in Counseling Psychology.  The programs contacting folks now are typically programs with January interview dates.

Anecdotally, I’ve received communication  from a few programs but they have only been programs with January Interview Dates. I have yet to hear from any February folks.

Hi everyone!! Has anyone heard from the University of Florida's counseling department? I read that that people received rejection letters today from U of F, but I think it was just the clinical track people Thanks!

I thought I’d share a timeline update with you. One of my colleagues/friends from Div. 17 is a faculty member at UF and they shared the following with me: They should be done reviewing by Dec 23. Phone interviews will happen shortly after that until Jan 6, then Interview Day Invitations will follow (for an interview date of Feb 1-2).  I hope this update helps.

They received applications from the graduate school last Friday, and began looking at them this week.

Hi all, just added my signature (copied @spring2000...thanks for the template!).

Is anyone applying to non-clinical or counseling programs because you really liked the PI's work? This is true for a couple of the schools on my list.

I am primarily applying to counseling psychology programs, and it is exclusively because I love the faculty’s work. In addition, I really enjoy the approach that counseling psychology utilizes when it comes to client care. I’ve had the fortune of engaging with APA Div 17, which has led me to building relationships with folks in the field (which has been invaluable during the application process).

I’m not sure if this will ease your anxiety or fuel it so I apologize in advance, but I’m more inclined to think if a POI is no longer sure about taking a student it has a lot more to do with lack of funds/budget cuts if anything. I had correspondence with a few POIs who were initially interesting in taking students but very recently (ie few weeks ago) updated me that they were no longer accepting due to budget cuts in the department/ still haven’t heard back from grant agencies due to COVID. I guess what I’m trying to say is the only thing you can do is submit your best application and hope things work out. These programs will always be competitive one way or another we just have to try to stay as optimistic as possible!

As someone with professors for friends, a significant factor is the worry of balancing remote work, the potential stress of adding an additional student, along with potential funding challenges.

we are going through hard times as applicants but maybe it makes us stronger ???

  10.  It is almost more nerve-wracking that some programs are deciding to remove the GRE requirement, as I know many prospective students are hoping to use a high GRE score as a significant part of their application. I'm neck deep in research, and I am hoping to finish a publication this summer but who knows?

And I feel that! I have been trying to work on my personal statements, but my motivation is just not there yet. At least we are getting closer to the new fiscal year for academia, which means we will see what programs might not be taking or funding students.

  11. I’m incredibly excited to be applying to Counseling Psychology PhD programs this fall, with a few clinical programs as well. It’s been a few years since I’ve completed my M.Ed. in Student Affairs, and I’ve been working for Residence Life at a college since then. I’ve been lucky to gain clinical experience providing triage for mental health crises for the campus. I feel relatively confident on my research experience, as I’ve managed a diversity research lab on the side. Through partnerships with faculty at the institution I work at; I’ve gotten a publication and a grant, just got a book chapter accepted for first authorship, and am submitting a manuscript tomorrow for review. I’m relatively engaged with the APA, which I hope will demonstrate my work as an active member of the Counseling Psychology community.

I know my challenge areas are my GRE scores (V158/Q155/W5) and my undergraduate grades (3.44); so I’m pretty nervous because I’m not retaking the GRE since my master’s application four years ago, so oof. My research interests are focused on relationships, coping, resilience, assessments, positive outcomes, and supervision within the framework of identity, intersectionality, and cultural competency. I look forward to connecting with you all!

@psycholonoir I would suggest reaching out to a research lab to offer yourself as a volunteer, and take advantage of any opportunities to contribute significantly. You could also reach out to any post-doctoral researchers who do interesting work and inquire about collaborations. Be sure to really consider what you want to publish on, as you need to be able to contribute some sort of novel perspective or idea regarding something that may be pre-existing or a new concept.
