I would say all of the above! Ask for POI advice, integrate and apply it if you get it and it’s feasible, and apply more broadly to more PIs. They won’t think badly if you for applying again, in fact, it’s a sign of perseverance and true interest in the program.

Ideally, publish during your internship! Are you interested in clinical psychology? Even though you are a US citizen, it may be an uphill battle getting into a US PhD program as an international student, so that’s just something to keep in mind. Unfortunately you have to do better than your US peers to stand out.

The PI I'm interviewing with today has very similar interests to mine, but also has a focus on advanced statistical modeling as part of her work. But I don't know if that's something she wants grad students to be familiar with, or if she has hired a stats person as part of her grants. Oh my!

Current grad students//anyone with insight into this: does anyone have a general idea of how many prelim phone interviews turn into in person interview invites?

I’m curious how much experience other applicants have with big data analysis, advanced modeling, and/or programming in r or python? Especially non clinical and counseling applicants.

If PIs are doing phone screening interviews and you haven't gotten contacted by them, is that a pretty sure sign that you won't get an official invite?

Sometimes faculty have talks on Youtube or other forums you can watch. Also make sure if they have published a book you have at least skimmed it!
