  1. Hi GradChat, I will be starting at Harvard (graduate student) in the fall. I am a female in my mid-twenties and I'm seeking another female student to live with and "apartment search" with together. I'm meeting a realtor in 2 weeks in Boston and I will be searching around the Allston/Brighton/Brookline area, as I'm unfamiliar with the area and I currently live across the country. The search so far has been disheartening. I will be searching for a 2-bedroom apartment and looking to split the costs, as I will be commuting probably every day to campus. My priorities include a location where the commute is reasonable, affordability, of course safety, and a full/decent kitchen that will allow me to cut expenses by cooking at home. I don't smoke/drink. I'm quiet, clean and dependable. I'm willing to compromise and make things work, I'm straight forward and I'm looking for someone who is the same. If anyone is interested, kindly DM me, and we can talk about details over text/call/skype, etc.
  2. I have a few questions about Allston. Please forgive my ignorance, I've been reading different comments about it's crime rates/safety concerns. Also, I'm a female in my mid twenties, I don't "go out" to clubs, bars, etc. or stay out late past midnight. Is it a reasonably safe area for a woman to live alone? How far is the commute to Harvard campus? Is public transportation to Harvard from Allston a hassle or reasonable to navigate? Are there any parts of the city that should be avoided?
  3. Can you walk to Harvard Square from Somerville and would you recommend living there? I'm totally unfamiliar with the area. I'm married, it's one of various reasons why I would prefer to have my privacy. But just to compare, in general, how much cheaper is a room mate arrangement as opposed to a small studio?
  4. Harvard. I have no knowledge whatsoever of the T-line or the local public transportation in general. I don't mind walking even 5-10 miles.
  5. I will be relocating to the Cambridge/Boston area and I'm looking to rent a studio or a 1-bedroom apartment. The most important aspect is that it will be 1) private (not a shared space in a larger house) and 2) in a relatively safe part of town. What is a reasonable price for this In the Cambridge or Somerville area? What expectations should/shouldn't I have when searching? Are there any other areas that you would suggest?
  6. I got into both, but I'm leaning toward HDS. My impression is that Second-Temple Judaism at YDS is top notch, but I'm sure there are amazing opportunities and courses for Jewish Studies at HDS and other departments in Harvard as well. Like you, I'm also waiting on YDS financial aid, but unless its anything miraculous, I doubt it will sway me, considering the stats for previous years that are consistent with what the poster above mentioned (10,000-15,000). As for the admitted student days, I doubt I will attend. My thesis defense is March 28 and I have a bunch of term papers and presentations due around that time. I want to finish the semester strong and coupled with my financial concerns, it will be a hassle. Are you worried about housing expenses/living costs? I'm a bit nervous, Boston is so expensive. I'm relocating across the country and my husband is a 3rd year PhD student and cannot move with me, so we will have a financial burden of maintaining two separate residences next year.
  7. Are you somewhat local? I live on the other side of the country and I'm not sure if I should save that 1k+, instead of going to both admitted student days. Seeing the campus won't really influence my final decision. Are you leaning toward one over the other?
  8. I got into Yale for MAR...is financial aid coming? For those still confused like I was, I did not receive an email, however I signed into my account and there was an update.
  9. Well my SOP and writing sample were both completely unrelated to one another. It wasn't well thought out, I just used part of an old term paper. I figured the writing sample was just to see that you're somewhat coherent and have the capability to formulate an argument/an academic paper and the SOP was to establish fit, highlight general interests and demonstrate some knowledge of the specific program, professors you'd like to work with, etc. I know for PhD applications it's a completely different animal.
  10. I think it's true that fit is a big part of it. I got into HDS, even though I waived the GRE.
  11. Ooh same here, I felt like I should have applied for Liturgical Studies or Religion and Lit instead of Missions/World Christianity. I believe Bible is quite competitive, but the truth is that you never really know...some years (and applicant pools) are more competitive than others.
  12. I just re-read and realized you're an international student, so is my husband. In that case, go with the full funding offer!!
  13. I'm in a similar situation after receiving a couple different offers! I don't know enough to comment on your field but some important financial considerations(just food for thought): how much do you already have in debt/student loans? Do you have any savings? Are you willing to work part-time while in school? Are you married or do you have a significant other that works full-time/has earning potential to make it easier for you? Good luck with your decision and I'm sure you'll end up where you need to be
