  1. I could be entirely wrong here, but 9 months also seems pretty short for taking classwork and producing a solid thesis to present to PhD programs (if one hopes to take that route). I don't have an MA, though, so I might be misjudging the time frame.
  2. Definitely. $56k is a big ask for a terminal 9-month MA. If you're independently wealthy, then I'm sure it'd be a good program. But for everyone else, it just sounds off.
  3. Yes!! I was like: Bye, Felicia! Although, nothing against UChicago. Still a great school! But that MA program raises my skepticism sense.
  4. The Universe was listening!!! Congrats
  5. Yes! Of course! And if they deny you the funding, threaten to take your talents to South Beach!
  6. Just for good measure: félicitations!!!!
  7. Because of the acceptance? Or the post-acceptance jager bombs? Or both?!?!
  8. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS!!!! CONGRATS YANAKS!!!!
  9. Fake news. The best according to Russia News and World Report: They’ve been making HUUUGE gains in the rankings of late.
  10. Too bad: I hear TU has a decent Russian Studies program... X-)
  11. Good point, @OceansAreBlue -- I forgot that ETS revised the negative-marking system. As it turns out, the most recent practice test says that you'd have to answer 220-222 questions correctly to score an 800. That sounds more reasonable than 228-230 (though still quite tough). Well, congrats to you, anonymous Berkeley admit, and here's to hoping we see more!
  12. Mellow, you need to ... dare I say ... mellow!! You got accepted to Chicago, no? You must have a killer strong application!!!! I have faith in you ! FWIW, to receive an 800 on the 2002 LGRE, you'd have to get 228-230 questions correct. That just seems impossible. Again, things can change from test to test, but I'm having a hard time buying it.
  13. Not to be a jerk, but 800 sounds fishy. Unless the scoring range has changed (which, granted, is possible), that number exceeds the highest score from 2013-2016 by forty points: https://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/gre_guide_table2.pdf. Sooooo I'm putting on my skeptical Homburg. But, if that 800 is legit, I will also tip my skeptical hat.
  14. Anyone care to claim the second Berkeley acceptance??
  15. Taking a Sabbath is excellent advice! But I've often found that, when attempting it, I'm foiled by the perennial pitfall: "The Spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." [grumbles about technology ruining everything ... then appreciates the irony thereof]
  16. [Harold Bloom remarks with a satisfied chuckle that even* those with degrees from Harvard probably won't know what he's talking about] *especially
  17. A solid contender for best English forum post of '18!!!
  18. I, too, echo everybody's congratulations, and, moreover, would like to add that two of my favorite English professors (one of whom was a letter writer) are married, so it's definitely possible! Also, at my school, one of my political science professors is married to a superstar in the history department. It can work if you make it work! (Which sounds lame but is the truth).
  19. CONGRATS TO ALL THREE OF YOU!!! !!!
