  1. I don't know how much help this is going to be, but I have read her articles and conversed with people who know her closely. She is really competent and prolific in philosophy of language (especially, on the formal semantics and pragmatics side) and, if you are interested in the topics of propositional content, the interaction of the content of an utterance and its context and such, then I suggest you enroll in the course, since she seems to be one of the most competent young scholars in the field.

From her writings, I can only presume she demands rigor and precision from her students, which is a good thing for a philosopher or semanticist anyway.

Which campus will you be on? I went to the School of Public Health for my master's in 2015-2016 and rented a space off of the Hopkins housing site (it's like craigslist for Hopkins students). If you're on the Homewood campus, the surrounding areas of Charles Village and Remington are nice but very undergrad. I lived there for a year and loved the area but felt a little too old for the undergrad scene. If you're on the medical (east baltimore) campus, I would NOT suggest living in East Baltimore (like the 929 building), but instead living in Mount Vernon, Midtown Belvedere, Bolton Hill, Station North, or Charles Village and just taking the shuttle bus to campus (it runs regularly and is free!). If you have a car or fine with walking to the medical campus, Upper Fells, Butchers Hill, and Patterson Park are nice too.

It mostly depends on which campus you'll be on, and what your options are for transportation.

Thank you so much for the really detailed answer. I will be a graduate student at the philosophy department, hence Homewood. Charles Village looks very nice and close to Homewood. I don't mind the undergraduate scene, but I am a bit worried about the rent. I have checked and the prices fluctuate too much from property to property. I will not have a car, so I care about the transportation options, though I doubt I will leave the Homewood area too much.

How much did you pay for your place back in 2015-2016?

All right friends, a little panicky. One of my waitlist institutions offered to Skype with me. Regardless of my chances, which are the customary 'non-zero', it seems to me that it would basically be stupid of me to not take up the offer to chat... but I don't really have any questions about the program at this late stage. So, what should I do to not make a complete fool of myself? Should I even go ahead with a Skype meeting? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Absolutely go ahead with it. Even if you can ask only completely generic questions, take it. Can't hurt. Your not taking it will hurt your chances for sure.

I know at Indiana there will be movement on Sunday, since I need to let them know my answer by 9 am EST Sunday. Maryland's deadline was 10 am EST Sunday.

Good to know. I am sitting on one offer which I have to decide on April 16 and two wait-lists, one of which is my top choice.

i see a "declining offers 2018" thread, but not an "accepting offers 2018" thread, so i'll post this here...

i've recently accepted my offer from berkeley. has anyone else decided to go to there?

With this, which offers have you rejected?

  6. This thread seems in need of some more positive statistical data. I went to a Turkish school (no ranking whatsoever) for a non-philosophy, low-GPA undergrad and I am wait-listed at one top-5, one top-20 and one top-40 program. Not the most successful story, but given my background, I should have had no chance.

Don't prejudge yourself with pedigree stuff. Be genuinely interested in a subject and do your best to produce a novel writing sample. You may be amazed how it works out for you.

I see a lot of people with Notre Dame waitlists, and some new Notre Dame rejections. I still haven't received any information from them. Anyone got a inkling for why this might be the case? A hidden waitlist perhaps?

I also haven't heard from Cornell yet. Not sure what to make of this either.

Good news is, I got waitlisted at U Texas Austin!

You can solicit your decision for Notre Dame. Someone did yesterday and found out, I think.

I declined offers from Ohio State, Northwestern, Toronto, Pittsburgh, Yale, Princeton, Harvard and Michigan, and I removed myself from Columbia's waitlist.

My AOI is phil of langauge.

This can really help me. Many thanks for this.

Great to meet another third-world international applicant! haha If you are offered to visit, you must be really at the top of the WL, likely to be accepted. I know how it is hard for third-world students to get into top North American phd programs, especially philosophy programs. (I have grad students friends in other disciplines, and they seem to have less difficulty...) It might be because of language or the small number of phd positions in philosophy... but either case, congratulations that you and I made it to here! Best of luck with your remaining schools and visits!

Thank you so much. It's great to meet you, a fellow international philosophy-fighther, too!

I hope that I am at somewhere at the top of the list, though I haven't heard anything.

Ain't that the truth? Not only is philosophy such a language-dependent discipline, but also dwindling in job market and so on. The odds are stacked against us in the process. A few of my professors mentioned that it was much easier to get into the top programs back in their days as international applicants, since most of the process was to find an eager letter writer. So though sad, it is not incomprehensible that it's getting tougher and tougher for internationals to make it to the top programs in North America.

Congratulations to you, too--you seem to have made it to beautiful programs as well.

OMG I was staring at the wrong place:

I was hoping to talk to you on the phone, but since you might not be in the US, I wasn’t sure when would be the best time to call.

So let me start by attaching the following letter, which I hope you find to be of interest.

Once you’ve read the letter, let me say: CONGRATULATIONS!

If you’d like to to talk about our offer — terms can be confusing, but this is our typical package — I’d be happy to do so. Just let me know when would be good and what number I should try to reach you at.

I look forward to talking to you soon.

    Best,
    Eric Watkins

Congratulations! By the look of things, you might double up tonight with the incoming Notre Dame announcements.
