Thanks for this great thread! I'm considering buying a new laptop for my phd, since my current one is kinda sluggish with a 4G RAM. The problem is when is the best time to purchase one, during the summer or waiting until Black Friday. Black Friday is a good option since there are tons of good deals. But getting a new laptop before everything starts can make things easier. Any thoughts? Thanks!!

Well, I will take it quite positive. At least, it makes me feel that you will be invited to an interview/open-house/visit soon. The current students are asked to reach you and answer your questions about the program, the department, the school and the city.

I second you. With only one acceptance so far, it's really frustrated. And I feel like my confidence has been torn gradually in this waiting game. Though I still have three programs pending, I'm just hardly able to be as positive as I was when I applied.

Got two rejections in 24 hours. I used to think I am a decent competitive applicant. Obviously, it's NOT the truth so far. SOOOOOOOO sad now. I know I SHOULD appreciate it since I've got at least one decent admission with generous funding. But I'm still upset since it is still the only positive result I've got this cycle. I just can't help feeling so bad about myself.

When I applied to MS two years ago, the decisions came out from early Feb till Early April. And the good ones came last. Wait and Hope!

I'm losing my mind in this endless waiting game.

Every week can be the toughest ever. It's Thursday night now, AGAINNNNNNN.

The rejection letter from UCLA was sent to me 1:57 AM EST today. I am still shocked and hope I am still in a way-too-true nightmare.

BIG CONGRATS!! So, what program did you apply to? Cuz I'm also waiting for Berkeley, though they told me to expect the result from mid-Feb to early-March.

I second it. I think the possible mentors, as well as the culture (or atmosphere) of their labs, is really important when making your decision. To get an idea about his kind of things, I strongly recommend to visit both programs and talk with faculty and students there.

A guess.: This (abnormal compared to history data) silent week (for some of us) results from the larger applicants population.

Maybe they started to review the apps before the ddl. It's possible that they want to do it in a prompt way. So they review those submitted earlier in advance.

Congrats!! It may be a visit day (or possibly a weekend) with a series of interviews and other sessions help you get an idea about the program, the university, and the city. Since the program names it as "open house", the interviews MAY be relatively easier and most of the shortlist will get accepted in the end. It offers you a chance to chat with current students and faculty members (either those you are interested in or on adcom). If it's the case, they will try their best to show their strength.

Nothing here. That isolated result is driving me insane. But it seems that they sent out rejections at the same time with acceptance's, last year. So I guess the waiting game for UMich is reaching the end.

It's February now. Hope something great will happen soon. Finger crossed.

I am in the same boat. But I kinda believe it will be fine in the end. It's still early. Just wait hopefully.

Still waiting so I guess this kind of imagination will help. I will run out of the classroom or my office and call my parents though they are hours ahead. Then I will post it on social media, share it with my close friends, and get myself a drink. If it happens during a class, I will let the professor know in person right after the class, as both of them provided letters. If it happens at work, I'll tush out to grab some snacks and share the good news with everyone. I'll try my best not screaming out at either place. I find it a good idea to order mugs or t-shirts. Will do it definitely! I guess I will do nothing the rest of that week, though I will keep pushing myself finishing my thesis. After I finally calm down, I'll start to plan my moving and find a new apartment.

Congrats! It definitely means that you got accepted, and WITH funding! Go and celebrate it! The formal letter is just on the way. I think it may be a good idea to email them or call them, as it's more than one week from the date given to you. Good luck!
