  1. It definitely was a difficult time! But since I posted last I have put in an application for a MAT program that only takes 14 months, and emailed a potential supervisor at one of the universities abroad I was looking at. Compiling my list of potential places to go. I hope everyone's going to get news soon, and for those who didn't, I am always up to commiserate about this cycle's outcome.
  2. Thank you so much! I wish everyone the best of luck with this year too and I sincerely hope it's been than the last one!
  3. I'm glad to have helped, and I appreciate the rooting! Many people don't get in on their first round - I had someone message me and tell her it took four tries. I'm extremely stubborn, so I'm not giving up! And I hope you get good news soon, too!
  4. I am incredibly lucky because I have a support system of a bunch of lovely people who have been helpful with helping me do certain things; one of my friends who is already a professor has offered to coach me through next application season and I have many people overseas who I know asking around to see if professors would be keen about my research so I know who to reach out to, so that's helped immensely. I played video games all day today after my Greek class, I have stuff to distract me tomorrow, and I teach during the week, so I definitely have things to distract me before diving back into things I want to work on to help with the next application cycle. And if you ever want to message and talk about it, I'm all ears!
  5. Well, as of an hour ago, it's official: all rejections.
  6. Thank you, @TaciturnTales! "You only need one" is definitely my motto this year (and other years, of course). I do have a plan on how I'm going to tackle everything depending on the outcome, so now I just need it to happen so I can move forward. The anxiety has been the worst, so I'm looking forward to not waiting anymore, lol. So I'm just crossing my fingers now.
  7. Just got my rejection from Princeton. Really disappointed, feeling the pressure, and really anxious about the result of the last school...
  8. Got the rejection from UDel today. Just Rutgers and Princeton left...
  9. Got the rejection from the University of Delaware today (Antiquity to Renaissance)
  10. I kind of have back up plans / action plans in case of an All-Rejection pile, and I feel like I'm kind of mentally prepared for it but it's still an ick feeling.
  11. So I'm just waiting to hear from the University of Delaware now for art history and I saw on the results that some folks got a phone call so I'm worried about that because I'm teaching during the day so I can't answer my phone until after four. If anyone has heard from them, can you let me know how that phone call was (and/or what time of day they called if you're willing to let me know that!) I'm nervous because UDel is the only place I applied to for Art History (Antiquity to Renaissance) whereas my other programs were Ancient World/Classics-focused, and I have all rejections so far. I'm getting pretty discouraged!
  12. Oh that's really interesting! And Lieden's a really good school and Catullus is great, so it sounds like a good program! I keep forgetting a lot of international programs have projects already advertised to apply to; I'm used to proposing my own being the norm.
  13. Congrats! I'm sorry it's not enough; could you reach out to your POI and inquire if there was any external funding that might help supplement it?
  14. I also got my Yale rejection today. Still waiting on UDel, Princeton, and Rutgers now... I'm trying to not get discouraged but it is super frustrating to have all rejections lined up thus far.
  15. I got my rejection from IPCAA on February 10th, so I'm not sure what their timeline is like! I'll cross my fingers for you. ?
  16. I'm learning ancient Greek with Belfast Classics right now and they have a summer session that's one or two weeks (you choose) and it's really great. Helen McVeigh is an awesome instructor. The time zone change from Ireland is a bit intense because of where I live but I'll keep getting up at 6:30 am until I get through all their offered modules.
  17. Which programs in Europe were you looking at @TariqM? Just out of curiosity.
  18. I think that makes total sense. Once I officially-officially get all my rejections, I'm going to look into office/teaching jobs along with things in my field but I definitely need something to pay the bills in the meantime...
  19. A lot of people are REALLY helpful on Academic / Classics Twitter; I made a pretty good amount of connections and friends that way. Had one of my mutuals actually offer to be my "application coach" if I don't get in anywhere this year. I really think there needs to be a "writing sample workshop" for PhD applicants (and MA too!) to make sure our papers are as polished as possible. If I wasn't so busy I'd make one myself but I'm already overwhelmed on things already ? But yeah, I reached out on Twitter and a few professors read things for me and gave me feedback, which was really nice of them to do.
  20. Thank you for looking for the handout! And this advice sounds vaguely familiar, so if I read it elsewhere/asked you before, I apologize for making you repeat it ? Most of my anxiety about this is that I myself am not the best test-taker in the world, and my anxiety spikes during exams like this (I bombed my GRE pretty hard except for the writing portion), and even on the practice test provided by the ETS comes out less than stellar. So now I'm anxious about my anxiety, which is a fun new thing I'm experiencing, lol.
  21. I'm so sorry! This is the second time I've seen this happen to someone; you would think they would be extra careful to spell someone's name right, especially if they were sending a rejection letter. That's so frustrating. I hope you get better news - with your name spelled properly - soon.
  22. Thanks for letting us know! I'm waiting to hear back from them, too.
  23. That's excellent. Thank you for sharing! I have to take the Latin Praxis and wish there was a comprehensive study guide for it beyond what the ETS provides. If you have any tips on that, it'd be appreciated! There are a good amount of Latin opportunities where I live and definitely less competition for the positions.
  24. Hey, all! I know a lot of us are really concerned about how admissions season is going. I've been rejected by half of the programs I applied to so I wanted to make this thread for people who wanted to talk about their possible plans or just commiserate about the situation. I followed up with one of my POIs and she told me that despite having a strong application, it was a really difficult decision this year, especially getting so many applications, but to work on my writing sample. She said I was working with a fascinating subject, but that the front end of my paper read more like a literature review than a research paper. I know a lot of places might have looked at my languages as lacking as well, so my follow-up plans in case every place rejects me is going to be the following: Refresher language courses (I'm currently taking a Beginners Greek Class online to refresh my brain and plan on continuing with the same place until I can only do one-on-one study after I've exhausted all of their group classes) Working on polishing up a writing sample that's at least 20 pages long on its own, so it's polished enough for any PhD program Volunteer work relevant to my field (e.g., with Save Ancient Studies Alliance, or at a museum with ancient collections when they allow us to do so again) Other than that, I'll probably go for a M.Ed. to get my teaching license for English or History, then try to add Latin later (in my state, once you have one license, it's easier to test with the Praxis to be licensed for multiple areas). There are M.Ed. programs here that only take 11-14 months so once I get my final rejection (if that happens), I'm going to go right into that and then trying again next cycle with more international PhD programs on my list. Anyone else want to share their ideas of what they might want/need to do in the event of a full rejection list?
  25. I'm really, really holding out hope for two schools on my list to go through but I'm Concerned about whether Ivies will bother with me this cycle (I've got a 3.90 from my MA but low languages - only 4 undergrad semesters each because my MA was culture focused I didn't do a lot of languages - and my undergrad record is less than stellar). I'd honestly be really happy at one and kind of "ehhhh" about the other, but we'll see. The waiting IS awful, though, I saw one of the schools waited until the end of March to reject people in past years so that's disconcerting.
