I withdrew from two classes my sophomore year (got two permanent W marks on my transcript). I would have otherwise utterly tanked my GPA. I explained my reasons for it in my SOP. Obviously an allied health clinical doctorate is going to have different acceptance policies than a science or engineering PhD program, but it did not seem to affect me at all and no one has asked me about it. I do think it will probably matter if the class is in your major. Both of mine were gen eds. But I don't know whether a terrible grade in your major is worse than a withdraw in your major.

Sweet! I'll see you there! My husband and I are treating it like a mini-vacation and going to Chicago on Saturday for St. Patrick's Day!

UC and OU are great schools! I think a lot of people will decline in the next few weeks and then you should be good to go!

Do parents attend open houses?
AB121212 replied to chipsahoy2018's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Yeah, for recruitment open houses, it's normal to have a guest and I think it's extremely helpful to have an outside perspective to ask questions you wouldn't think of. For interview events, it would be inappropriate to bring a guest. -
I am going on the 19th. Let me know what it's like, if you don't mind! Congrats on your acceptances!

Do parents attend open houses?

Well, I completely change my answer then. Don't bring your mother. I thought this was a post-acceptance, recruitment-style open house. Glad this was clarified! -
Do parents attend open houses?

I'm just visiting from audiology, but I brought my husband to the one open house I've been to already and maybe 4 or 5 other people (EDIT: out of ~15) brought a parent. I have also asked ahead of time for my other three open houses and they all said guests were welcome! (I might be bringing my dad instead for an open house my husband can't attend.) I wouldn't bring more than one person, though -- an entourage might be a little strange! -
What are your 4 dream jobs? Are you qualified for any of them?
AB121212 replied to Authorization's topic in Jobs
1. Practicing audiologist and co-owner of an ENT practice with my M.D. brother (relies on both of us obtaining our degrees and getting the resources to start it, but we are both on the path to this becoming reality) 2. Researcher, university lecturer, and textbook author (need to get my Ph.D. later, but doable in the future) 3. U.S. senator (I guess technically I could do it -- look who's president -- but I don't feel personally qualified or experienced enough, plus I'm not old enough yet) 4. A fiction author and/or poet (although I have not written creatively since high school and have no formal training, it's technically possible) -

Is anyone planning on attending one of the Northwestern visit days?

At UC I got an automated email to tell me the portal had been updated. At OSU I got an email from Dr. H and one from the graduate school as a whole.

So I have heard back from both OSU and UC. For OSU, I received an early acceptance in January from them because I was nominated for fellowships, but I don't think their regular decisions have gone out yet. So I wouldn't worry about that one yet. For UC, I received my acceptance on Valentine's Day. Your decision should be in the portal where you paid the supplemental app fee. If there's nothing there, I would contact the department again. Good luck!

I have three professors who wrote letters of recommendation for me (both for initial acceptance and for funding). Important info here is that I graduated in 2016 and have since moved away from the city of my undergrad institution, but will most likely be moving back and going there for grad school. The first, Dr. A, I was very close to during my undergrad. She was both my adviser and the professor for two of my classes. She is still working there. The second and third, Dr. B and Dr. C, I had for two classes each but only occasionally talked to them in office hours and such -- not nearly as close with them, PLUS they have both since moved to different universities on the other side of the country. SO my questions are, A. is it appropriate to give them gifts to thank them for writing very strong letters for me, B. especially since I cannot physically give B and C a gift, would it be appropriate to send them digital Amazon gift cards, and C. if so, how much is an appropriate amount?

I have not yet started, but my spouse and I got married last year (both at age 23), and I will be attending a professional program in this fall. We have been together since we were 14 years old and when I start, we will have been together over a decade. I can't imagine doing this without him. My program is one where people typically enter straight out of undergrad (which I did not do). I think I will probably stick out as being older and farther along in life than my peers. But I will have both an emotional and an economic support system in my spouse, and I think that's extremely valuable and will be a serious help for succeeding. I look forward to the day where I can do the same for him when he decides to start pursuing grad programs (he is in neuroscience/pharmacology). Unfortunately, the fact that we both need to pursue advanced degrees to reach our career goals means that we will probably have to put starting a family on hold for much longer than we otherwise would, but c'est la vie. I wish you and your fiance the best of luck!

Could also be that the school does rolling admissions without being transparent about it, and those who applied early got their applications reviewed and accepted before those who applied later. Therefore the people who applied later might still be having their apps reviewed. I would never assume a rejection until they've explicitly told you.

So Rush sent out a bunch of acceptances today! Anyone planning to attend one of the preview days?

Any chance at all that you could do Audiology (AuD) and Speech Language Pathology (MA)?

Welcome to all the new people! Good luck with your applications.

ME! Every time I get an email I freak out! It's hard to just sit around and feel like I'm not really accomplishing anything, so I've been a. searching for scholarships b. searching for jobs for my husband in the cities of the schools I applied to c. searching for houses/apartments in those cities d. checking Grad Cafe literally every 15 minutes I think I'm driving my husband crazy. I'm obsessed.

So out of curiosity, when you guys first started undergrad, were you always intending to do the audiology track? Or were you originally going for SLP/something else? I started out just with linguistics, added the speech&hearing science major with the intent to do SLP (because I didn't think I'd easily find an actual linguistics job), then accidentally fell in love with all my audiology classes....

@AudieB Wow, so many of our schools overlap! (Just switch out NIU for OSU.) Maybe we'll be classmates! Good luck! If it's any consolation that's all I've heard from any of those schools either. Hopefully we'll hear about the Rush supplemental app soon....

I am applying this year and have been so nervous because of my academic history. I took two years between undergrad and applying to graduate school for various personal reasons but finally I'm going back to school. When I was in undergrad, I got good grades, but I didn't really do anything extracurricular at all. I applied to Ohio State (my alma mater), U of Cincinnati, NOAC, Northwestern, and Rush. So far I have been accepted to Ohio State (and nominated for a fellowship!) but haven't heard back from anyone else. Ohio State was my first choice so I'm super pumped and will probably go there regardless of funding. I had been refreshing the portal every day over and over until it finally changed. Good luck to you!
