  1. We're going to be neighbors lol. Sheffield is about an hour from Manchester. What are you studying? I have 0 friends in the UK, but one especially loyal friend in Oslo.
  2. I've applied to the CUNY program, but I'll check this one out as well. I'm just going to have to talk it over with my parents.
  3. There is a facebook group for people in my program. Once more people get accepted, maybe I can reach out and see if anyone wants to room together as well.
  4. You're amazing! I'm looking at student houses near the city center. I have a cat so I can't live in uni housing. Does Sheffield have a bus system or t-bane? Did you make friends mostly within the arch. department? I've always made all my friends through living with them. I love having a nice community house but have no idea how to go about finding that. I'm honestly getting quite nervous about some of the science courses, I'm better at history and reading. I'll just have to do my best lol.
  5. I work at a kennel so I would actually love to have an excuse to leave before the busy season lol. I just planned on working and getting ready to move to the uk.
  6. I've heard lots of people talk about their arch department, which is why I picked it. It's quite well-developed and had the PERFECT program for me. Any tips for surviving life in Sheffield?
  7. Are they usually online? Summer is the busy time at work for me.
  8. I was a fool and spent 3 years taking Norwegian. TBH it was worth it!
  9. I didn't interview but I was accepted to the MSc Osteology/Funerary Archaeology program at University of Sheffield last week. I have 0 experience in archaeology and majored in history, so this will be very new. I took 1 phys anth class in undergrad. Apparently archaeology in the UK is considered a subfield of history so my major is more applicable.
  10. Archaeology in the UK is considered a branch of history rather than anthropology it seems. I have a BA in history and am not overly gifted in science so I expect to be challenged. But I have other skills that will give me an edge so I think I'll be ok Btw, a friend of mine pestered me to apply to the U of MN. I didn't, but apparently Minneapolis is a great city.
  11. That's pretty exciting, honestly I totally forgot they were doing that lol. I figured Latin would make me more employable, I mean who ever heard of a medievalist who doesn't know Latin!
  12. I see this thread is quite old lol. I got my acceptance letter very early. I'm from WA and got my BA there. I'll be getting my MSc in Sheffield, UK. I've lived in Norway before so I kind of have an idea of what moving abroad will be like. Never lived in the UK though, only visited. I'm really unfamiliar with actual British culture, other than what I see on tv. I don't know how people make friends there. I would have preferred Norway but Sheffield has the perfect program for me.
  13. I'm a little worried about my ability to study 2 languages at once. I've been trying to find a latin class that I can take before fall 2018 but haven't found anything yet. I don't know if I want to focus on Scandinavian archaeology. There's a program at the university of Oslo that I like, so maybe that's something that can come later.
  14. If he was just getting a masters, then it wouldn't be so weird that he was dating undergrads, who are usually at most 1-4 years younger, or the same age. But wanting to date girls fresh out of high school as someone nearing their 30s? Extremely gross. Besides, playing tag on the playground and all that? Undergrads don't do that shit.
  15. Has anyone ever moved abroad with pets? I got accepted into grad school in the UK and want to take my cat with me. I've moved between countries before so that's not really a problem, but I've never moved any sort of distance with pets. My parents don't want to take care of her while I'm gone so they would probably be a good resource for help too.
  16. Actually, this is a great jumping-off thread for another topic: how to avoid creepy self-important weirdos in grad school?
  17. Lmao I know. This is really bizarre. I'm still in my early 20's and looks very young (ugh) and I would RUN, not walk, away from this guy. He doesn't even want a girl who is better than him intellectually. That's INCREDIBLY unattractive to women who are trying to get an education and establish themselves in their fields.
  18. Hi! I just got accepted to an archaeology MSc program in the UK. I'm interested in medieval history so I plan to specialize in that area. I only speak/read English and modern Norwegian so I'll try to fit in Latin and either French or German. Any recommendations for which language?
  19. I'll also be studying in the UK and I had a hard time figuring out their site. I couldn't find their eligibility criteria.
