Looks like everyone is still waiting on a couple of places... makes me feel better. Can anyone claim the South Carolina unofficial acceptance? Wondering if you got your official acceptance yet...

So . . . what are you wearing (to recruitment weekends)?
Indiana_Bones replied to TheNewGuy's topic in Anthropology Forum
I wore dark-ish jeans, flats, and a tank top with a cardigan and fit right in, so I think what you've mentioned is perfect! Half of the people I met with were in workout gear/t-shirts/etc, so I wouldn't worry too much. There were a couple of admits in business casual clothes who looked great, but in my opinion were overdressed. One person wore a t-shirt and flannel and was totally fine. And ffs, don't wear heels unless they are second nature to you or are extremely comfortable -
Congrats!!!!

Also not a microbiologist, but did my undergrad at UGA (and applied there for PhD). I'm currently trying to make my decision as well, and all other things equal, it's going to come down to environment. Can I spend 5 years there happily, without going insane? If you're considering the environment aspect, I can help break that down. I know you said you visited, but Athens is the single greatest college town there is. I might get some flack for saying that, but I've visited a ton of campuses, and nothing comes near. In addition to having highly ranked programs, campus in general is comfortable. It's beautiful. Plenty of spaces to study, write, hang out, get a tan-- whatever it is, there's a green space for it. Tons of local culture adjacent to campus means that you can walk 10 minutes to get to a local coffee shop, or dive bar, or restaurant, or music venue. It's a fairly easy place to drive, but also easy if you don't have a car. The campus and city buses will get you just about anywhere you need to go, and EVERYONE uses them. Multiple libraries (a biology/south campus one, the main one, and I think a new one on North campus as well). Tons of places to study and do work that are never more than a 5 minute bus ride away. It's SO affordable. Want to live in a loft next to campus? You'll spend more money, but it's doable. Want to live away from campus? Tons of places to choose from. You'll get 4 seasons, but never be frozen to death. Not too far from Atlanta in case you feel like hanging out in a big city for the weekend, but honestly Athens>>>>>>Atlanta. Plus, you've got both mountains and beach within a couple hours' drive if you want to get away for a bit. I could go on forever but I should probably stop now If you want more info, or have specific questions about UGA/Athens, feel free to PM me!

@AnthroChick21 South Carolina and UGA. Not holding out hope for the latter since their funding is so bad this year and I'm not a perfect match for the department, but I'm super anxious about SC.

I'm trying my best to sit on my hands and -not- call anywhere for updates, but... I'm so tempted. Especially for the places that have their graduate school review AFTER the department has forwarded them their choices. Somehow calling the graduate school feels less intrusive than calling the department...

Maybe we should start placing bets on when the big schools will release decisions... you know, just to keep it lively (and to take our minds off the wait)

PSA: UGA has an abysmal level of funding this year so won't be taking as many students as they'd like. Dunno when they'll send decisions, though.

Hiya, I applied for arch/bioarch (POIs are in different tracks). I got an email from the grad coordinator, but my portal still says no information available.

Thank you! Technically I applied to the archaeology program because my POI was listed in that section, but I'm definitely bioarch/bioanth. My fingers are crossed for you-- definitely let me know when you hear something!

@Archaeodan Well, at least it was a program that wasn't the best fit for you, so that's something! Are you waiting on other programs?
