    How important is ‘fit’ for an MA program? Almost every factor except fit is pulling me toward NIU, but my AOIs are right in GSU’s wheelhouse.

    Political, Legal, Normative Ethics, and Metaethics. “Liberal” may be misused in American politics. However, the philosophical sense is still much broader than classical economic liberalism, e.g. Kant and Rawls are definitely liberals but not in the sense you mean.

    I wonder if they’ve given out the award for the Scholar in Political and Legal Philosophy yet. Since I already received my funding offer, I doubt I’ll be receiving it unless I’m possibly on the waitlist.

    I’m not sure. That’s why I really want to visit. One big thing for me is that NIU regularly offers metaethics and GSU hasn’t in recent years. NIU already posted their tentative course offering for next year. Hopefully GSU does soon because it matters for me that I have the opportunity to take classes in certain areas in an MA

    Moral and Political Philosophy, so GSU is a great option for me. I’d still like to entertain the possibility of NIU though.

    I hope NIU can get back to me about funding (high on the waitlist) before too long. Unfortunately they said it could take until April, right up to the deadline. I’m probably going to end up declining a few PhD offers in favor of doing an MA, and I’d really like to visit NIU. However, I can’t see doing that until I hear about funding when I have funding at GSU.

    An MA has all sorts of benefits. Don’t lose hope and you’ll be fine two cycles from now. Are you leaning toward one MA or waiting for any more decisions?

    I have two PhD offers, but as of now I am leaning toward choosing one of the top MA programs (in at two, waiting on one more). I think I could use more coursework before doing a PhD and it will help my future app through writing sample, narrowing my interests, and letters of rec. I guess it matters also if the MA program is offering you funding. If not, the best bet might be taking a year off and reapplying (if you decide you really don’t want to go to Syracuse).

    It’s probably not a good idea to take debt for an MA, but if you’re comfortable with doing so or can cover (most of) the cost of the program then that changes things. NIU seems to be a strong program and places well. Maybe courses/fit matter. NIU has already posted their tentative course offerings for next academic year, so you can see if they will be offering courses you’re interested in taking. Maybe Tufts has posted this/has it available as well. I haven’t checked. I am inclined to choose Tufts if I get accepted, but I do not have any debt from undergrad, so it wouldn’t be the end of the world if I took some now (although this could end up being the wrong decision).
