I am in the same boat. I recall having a conversation with a colleague who told me they will just give you the doctoral award instead. Not positive, so am waiting for a reply to my email.
The book "Fluent Forever" has a good science-based method that uses spaced repetition flashcards, connecting foreign words to memorable images and sounds instead of translations. There is also an affordable website called italki that has fluent tutors or licensed teachers you can Skype with at different hourly rates that range from 10-30 USD in my experience. Far cheaper and more effective than taking a university class.
