Hi! Im wondering if anyone knows if potential supervisors can see our OGS proposals? I just got notified yesterday about applying to OGS by Monday for Ryerson and was planning on using the same proposal I used for my SSHRC but it doesn't really match my POIs work Im wondering if that's ok? Its in the same general area still just not directly related but im not sure id be able to make a strong new proposal in two days. If anyone has any insights its appreciated :)

It’s totally fine to use your SSHRC idea/ propose an idea that you wouldn’t actually be doing in your masters or PhD!

Bit of a panic. I think I'm just too nervous. I am scared I'm not answering "why I want to be a clinical pysychologist" in the right way..... can someone just let me know how my answer sounds (I can pm it).

I find this question is definitely anxiety provoking as well- So it’s totally fair of to feel a little worry about it! But, I think the important part is that you’re answering honestly.  While we all might share similar experiences/desires to be in a clinical program, we all walk different paths! One persons rationale for wanting clinical may be something entirely different from another persons and that’s absolutely 100% okay:) I think the fact that you are worried about it just shows how much you’ve thought about it. We are all unique in our goals and you should just let that shine in your answer! I’ve heard so many times from interviews how they appreciate an honest answer rather than one that an applicant thinks they want to hear.
it’s so easy to second guess yourself during this process, so just try to remember how hard you’ve worked:)

This is really interesting - thank you so much for sharing!

Something else I've been wondering about is that in the situation you describe, it sounds to me (although I may be misunderstanding) like the professor identifies the student they want and as long as they meet the requirements of the committee, the committee will mostly like recommend that student's admission. Something I saw on an older forum (either 2018-19 or 2019-20 admissions) were schools where the committee essentially chooses their top candidate from a professor's shortlist. I can't seem to find that post again and don't remember what school it was referring to, but does anyone know if any schools operate like this? Seems kind of different from most of what I've seen on this forum so maybe I interpreted the person's post wrong but I'd be curious to know more!

I’ve also heard of some applicants not making the initial faculty screening but had a POI interested in working with them, and ultimately was able to gain acceptance due to the POI specifically seeking out their application. This to say, I think the process is varies by institutions.

Do all profs usually send out informal invites for one-on-one interviews before formal invitations to grad interview day? Wondering how likely it is that the first time you meet with a prof is on the formal interview day held by the department. If anyone has any insight on this, it would be greatly appreciated!

It’s really dependent on the person! Nearly all of my interviews have been formal. The only informal interviews I have had is when I specifically asked if a potential supervisor had time to speak before applications were due (to make sure our interests etc were in alignment). I have never had a supervisor reach out to me to set up an informal interview.

Wondering if anyone who applied to UNB has heard anything?

I didn’t apply there this year, but last year I got an interview invite on January 13. With everything going on this year (pandemic, influx of applications), I wouldn’t be surprised if the interview process for most schools is delayed, so try not too stress too much (easier said than done I know)! It’s still super early :)

I feel this so hard. I am a lab coordinator with 20+ presentations, a publication, and two accepted publications. I went to a smaller school with limited fields of research so I picked trauma and ran with it. But I'm really much more interested in sexual health. Because I didn't have that specific research experience, I did a two year program in sexual health in attempts to compensate a bit. I also work in addictions. So basically applications express interest in working in all three fields. I was SO worried about my SOI's looking disjointed and unfocused. But I've already been invited for two interviews and I've had two "informal chats." I should mention its my fourth year applying and the first time anyone has showed interest so I'm really hopeful. It was intimidating hearing that my POI of choice had 100+ applications and already knows/has worked with a number of them. But I'm remaining cautiously optimistic.

That sounds intimidating for sure! But it also sounds like you have got some excellent experiences AND you’ve had good luck so far! Keep up all your amazing effort, you can only keep going up:)

Hearing all of this about there being many more applicants this year is really nerve wracking. Especially since last year I only interviewed at 1 school out of the 13 I applied to. It's not like I could have upgraded my grades or anything so I'm kind of still standing on the same feet.

Keep in mind that more applicants doesn’t necessarily mean more competitive applications! I’ve heard from profs that often times nearly half of applicants don’t meet minimum criteria. I know the large number of applications is concerning, but don’t forget that it doesn’t take away from your level of competitiveness, or all the hard work that you have put in!

This is a really good point! Do you know of any schools that never did require the GRE though? I can't think of any.

University of Ottawa doesn’t require the GRE!

Applying to SFU, Mac, Windsor, UBCO, UBC, UVIC! Fingers crossed everyone.

GPA: 3.94,/4.00 Good LOR's, 3 RA positions, 2 clinical practicums, GRE: 166V, 164Q, NO publications, 2 presentations upcoming.

Status: extremely worried that I won't get in anywhere, especially since I don't have any pubs :(

It sounds like you have a lot of really good experience! I wouldn’t worry too much about publications (especially if you are just coming out of your undergrad). A lot of students (if not the majority) do not have any publications going into grad school. It sounds like you have great grades, experiences, and research dissemination activities! Most schools look at applications holistically, so I think you’re in a fine standing!

Hey guys! I will apply to clinical psych programs next fall. I was wondering if not having a thesis is a big deal breaker for universities? I will be doing an independent study next semester but it's not exactly a thesis project so I'm a bit worried. Thanks and good luck with your applications :)

I don’t think it’s a dealbreaker! Most programs require an honours or equivalent- independent projects typically count as equivalent :)  id say the more research experience you can acquire the better, but having the independent project is great- I think most schools would consider that!

Dal: interviews are in mid-Dec (Source: I'm a current Dal grad student haha)

When I interviewed for 2019 admissions, interview invites typically went out Jan-Feb ish for the program I applied to!

What is the interview/ admissions process like at dal? Do they do a lot of interviews/ make many offers?  There’s no program stats on the webpage!

When do people expect to start hearing back from programs for interviews?

It depends on the program, but you can start hearing back as early as December. In my experience, most programs reach out in January! But hearing back/ having an interview in February or even March isn’t unheard of.

I wonder why it is delayed when the applications were due back in October?

Did you apply for doctoral or masters level?

MA was december, so maybe they needed more time. I got an email from NSERC saying that they were going to delay results, but that you could view each institutions results individually as they become available, was my understanding. Applications go through departmental, faculty, and institutional levels (for MA anyways) so I’m assuming COVID has caused some delays.

I got an email from Ryerson last week letting me know that the admissions committee is still sending out offers as they were wanting me to apply for funding (despite not receiving an offer). But if anyone who has acceptances can you send me the initials of your POI? I want to know if it's time to rebook the GRE to get ready for the next round of applications.

Also, anyone hear anything from USask? Been absolute silence since I submitted the application

I know Sask sent out interview invites in early January, but haven’t heard anything since. They did say they would send out first round of offers by April 1.

Anyone know anything about Saskatchewan post-interview?

I haven't heard anything yet. I know I was told that they would send out the first round of offers by April 1.. I haven't heard anything since my interview in very early January.. It seems like a long time to wait. May I ask who your POI is?

That's strange... I was told that I'd likely get off the alternate list next week... I don't think this is the case considering that there are still alternates out there..

Are you on the alternate list as well at Carleton? If so, who told you that you’d make it off the list next week? As I was told they couldn’t share that information. I was also told that my change in status was due to clerical error.

Today I received a status change email and my status had changed from 'not offered' to 'alternate'. As far as I know, this is impossible!? Was there maybe a glitch and I was on the alternate list all along, or perhaps the entire offered and alternate list declined? Has anyone heard of this occurring before?

This happened to me as well... did you ever figure out why it happened? Did you end up being offered?
