  1. Also re pandemic concerns regarding budget cuts in admissions: If you haven't seen this spreadsheet already this gives you an overview of what programs are suspending admissions. Based on emails I've been sending to DGS/chairs most programs will be accepting a cohort next fall (at least in continental programs). The one exception I've found is Brown who still isn't sure what they'll be doing. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/1yb_yciijFGEp5roVKYJ40U4eiREo3ZQTeSQkEjGMSsg/htmlview?usp=gmail#
  2. I teach as an adjunct in a few departments where more courses are taught by contingent faculty than by T or TT. This is sadly the trend in higher education that adjuncts make up the bulk of the teaching load. With that said I wouldn't worry too much that your letter writers aren't T/TT. I've written letters for past students who now attend law and graduate programs.
  3. Hey All! I'm applying to philosophy phd's but I'm interested in some comp lit programs and some funded english MAs. I come from a background in continental philosophy focusing on the philosophy of art/aesthetics. Long story short I'm interested in how language structures human experience and how that process is both historical and sometimes inadequate. For comp lit I'm applying to CUNY, Emory, and UCI. English MAs I'm thinking Villanova, Duquesne, Boston College. Good luck!
  4. Thanks all for the above info, much much much helpful. It's so wild for me to see english and comp lit have funded MA programs as it's so rare to find them in Philosophy. I would think there would be some consistency there considering they're both humanities but I guess not.
  5. Nice to see someone else is interested in continental on this forum!
  6. I don't know the specifics of the program but Vanderbilt is always rated very highly in continental circles. A few classmates of mine from Stony Brook are finishing up their PhDs down there. And regarding good continental programs in Tennessee, The University of Memphis has a good reputation.
  7. Similar to you I switched from history to philosophy as an undergrad and fairly late-- maybe the end of my junior year. I had the same worries as you when I was applying for graduate programs. While courses may not show up on your transcript your statement of intent would be a great place to include what philosophy work you've done of which can be illustrated via your writing sample.
  8. Hey all, I'll be reapplying to several PhD programs this coming fall. I graduated with an MA back in 2013 and have somehow been able to keep afloat as an adjunct full time. My interests are in continental philosophy at large with a particular focus on the philosophy of art, aesthetics, ethics, and phenomenology. I'm not too sure what my writing sample will be, but I'll be hopefully auditing a course this coming fall and hope to produce something that will be workable for the application. I have a fairly extensive list of programs that interest me, but some of the top schools include UC Berkley's program in rhetoric, Stony Brook, New School, Boston College amongst many others. While I'm not excited about the application process I am happy to be going through it with others-- here's to getting to know everyone better as we do this together!
