From what I gather, late-20's and early-30's really doesn't seem to be that uncommon. Granted I'm somewhat out of the loop of the American academic norms (as an international), but still, I noticed many people with a couple of MAs and/or other experiences among the graduate students listed on the programs I applied to, so these people are likely not in their early 20s (barring any Doogie Howsers). It's true that some programs prefer people straight from undergrad, but I would venture that this isn't necessarily due to age; considering that the time-difference between post-BA and post-MA can be as short as one year, age doesn't seem to me the determining factor here. In any case, I think that you're right that being a bit older can also be a positive thing. If I self-reflect, I can honestly say that I'm much more prepared for and certain of this path now than I would have been a few years ago. Embrace your self-perceived anachronism! Revel in your ability to partake in Buzzfeed's incessant solipsistic mockery of gen-z (e.g. https://www.buzzfeed.com/daves4/millennial-versus-gen-z).

Just dropping in to share this, in case anyone could use a pick-me-up via humorous, eccentric, and historical feline portraiture. Eulalie Osgood Grover, writer of children's books and the original cat memer (c. 1911): (enjoy further perusal: https://archive.org/details/kittenscatsbooko00grov) -

I wholeheartedly agree with this, and I think it speaks volumes about the level of maturity and empathy of the people on here. Keep being awesome, everyone! -

Also waitlisted at WashU. I was feeling ghosted by academia, so it was good to hear something finally! -
Favorite Rejection Quotes from the Results Page

lol this one was mine. I laughed my ass of while posting it, and decided that my every posted rejection henceforth must be amusing to me (good thing I have a very low standard for comedy, because I'm honestly not very funny). -

Congrats to all the acceptees these last few days! And a very very sympathetic if socially-awkward nod of commiseration to those rejected and those still waiting. -
UT Austin Acceptances
beardedlady replied to spatial_person's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Another UT acceptee here! I hope to make it to the visit, but the flight will run at about 1500$ and will take over 20 hours, so I'm not sure yet if it'll be feasible. My focus in 20th/21st c women's writing, aesthetics, formations of time, feminist and queer theory, with a pinch of critical race and disability studies. @dreid I also think contacting them couldn't hurt, especially since it's already been a few days since the acceptances came out. -

Congrats, that's really awesome! I'm still impatiently waiting to hear from them, and it seems to me that they're not following their previous notification pattern (yes, I'm now researching patterns). I mean, I assume it's a no, but hoping for a maybe? Anyway, the department looks super cool, I'm crossing my fingers for you ? -

@Warelin Thanks for all of the info, Truly appreciate all of your work here. I'm skeptical that I'll get in, but good to know that not all hope is lost @briwriteshere & @reluctanthumanbeing congrats on the acceptances! And thanks to you too for updating on what's what, it really helps to know what's going on. -

I also applied to WUSTL (and Rice) and haven't heard from either. My mom asked if she should call to let them know how wonderful I am, but I'll leave that as a last resort. -

I think we could all use a reminder that unless we have first-hand information on the current adcomm process, pretty much everything should be taken with a pinch of salt. I don't in any way mean this as criticism to those who share info--on the contrary, I am extremely grateful and hope people will continue letting us know of what they have heard/experienced. But unless we actually get one of the adcomm members silly drunk so that they spill the beans, all we're working on is different forms of conjecture, inference, speculation and hearsay (granted that some pieces of information seem more authoritative that others). For those interviewing, prepare well, sleep well, and be awesome! An interview can never really be bad news. At worst, they're considering you. At best, they're considering you. Go be spectacular. For those, (like me), still waiting--I don't really have any good advice. This waiting is horrific. Be strong! -
UChicago Doodle Poll
beardedlady replied to jusrain's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Ended up falling asleep yesterday before hearing anything, and woke up this morning to the generic, cryptic email not inviting me to interview ? So it goes. Congrats to all those who got an interview and wishing you the best of luck! Would love to hear about your interview experiences, if you're inclined to share afterwards. -

Thanks I try not to get in the minds of the adcomm or think how/why they're choosing people for interviews, because that will drive me insane! Thanks, good luck to you too! -
UChicago Doodle Poll
beardedlady replied to jusrain's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I'm an international applicant (first time applying!) from an unknown school, with an MA. Currently struggling to write my thesis in the midst of application anxiety. I'm primarily interested in 20th/21st century women's writing, feminist criticism, and queer theory, but focus on the formation (or dissolution) of bodies which also leads me to consider race, disability, etc. I mentioned Berlant, Brown, and Ellmann. There are several others I could easily imagine working with, but I found these three most relevant (and interesting) to tie with what I wrote in my SOP. When they announce interviews, it's going to be the middle of the night where I am. So I know I'm going to feel extremely silly sitting at 1 am, anxiously refreshing my email every two seconds, waiting for an email that will likely not arrive... But waiting is the overarching theme of my life write now, so at least it fits. Good luck! To all involved--please do post when you get an interview so I know to stop refreshing and go to bed heh -
2019 Acceptances
beardedlady replied to Englishtea1's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I would honestly like to believe that they're not going to reject people on the basis of being less than 100% available to do an interview with such short notice. That would be extremely shitty of them. As long as you opened up a couple of slots, I can't imagine it being a problem, not to mention a whole day. But, I mean, I'm just working off a basic assumption of minimal human decency and fairness. I sincerely hope you get an interview! All we can do now is wait. -

Apparently Chicago's torturing practice of notifying an un-quantified group of students that they may receive an interview invite isn't new: -

You're right, but I still have no idea what to make of it ? Guess l'll just have to wait and see. It's pure evil to send out an email like this notifying you that maybe, perhaps, under some unknown circumstances, there'll be an interview! Blah. Way to play with my emotions, Chicago. -

I also just got this email but have no idea what it means since it seems totally tentative. Don't want to get my hopes up...
