Interviews/Acceptances/Rejections Fall 2019

You don't need to apologize. I understand where everyone is coming from because each sentiment has spoken to me. Let us all remember this is a trying and frustrating time, and let us not assume we know what challenges others are facing regardless of where they got accepted or rejected. @jriveracal you shouldn't have to explain yourself, but now that you did I hope we can all see that people have grave obstacles in their own lives. Let us not take our frustrations out on others. This is soc 101. We have one group of people all struggling, but status differences are turning us against each other. Again, I feel the frustrations of the other camp who has not been granted such acceptances, but now is not the time to be spiteful, especially to someone who only had good intentions. -

*Stares into mirror* It was me who confused all along, lmao. I read "absolutely" as an angry and sassy remark meant to accuse Harvard of sending a passive aggressive message. I did that because I (initially) read Harvard's message as basically meaning "you are not qualified, and that is why you did not get in." -

I have to say, this was a very unnecessary comment coming from the most elite institution in the united states. "I know that this decision comes as a disappointment. Unfortunately, enrollment of new students is limited to a small fraction of those who are qualified for admission." Harvard absolutely gets more qualified applicants than they admit. This was from the results page. I think Harvard does mean exactly that - they get more qualified applicants than they admit. I read it several times and (coming from a background in journalism) this is a little bit of a poorly-worded message because it caries a double meaning depending on colloquial interpretation. -

From his post it looks like it was yesterday. I did not get one. I hate to be so glum but my application for them was shit so I expect a rejection. Based on past grad cafe results from the past they may have another round of interview emails as decisions are made. Good luck. -
@artvandaley I feel you. My hope for making it this cycle is crumbling. (1 official rejection, 2 likely, 1 program is MIA/radio silence) My scores were decent (your's definitely better). Also no pubs, but working on that now. I've already begun the process of mentally accepting I won't get in. I think my SOP's were the problem. I kept them professional and well-worded, but did not focus on the "fit" aspect like I should have. For you, all I can say is that you applied to extremely competitive programs so you may have been a fine candidate, just no luck this cycle. I wouldn't give up hope though. Obviously do what you want to in life, but if grad school is a dream or part of a dream then stay strong and apply next cycle. I know I will. I will just go back to the drawing board. I wish you the absolute best.

Idk about you guys, but once all the results are in it's going to be weird not spending every second of my human existence checking my email, gradcafe, reddit, and grad portals. I'll have to get a life... I kind of forget what life was like before this. -

That's rough. I feel for you. I think it's hard enough to face rejection alone, but to add having a friend (so similar to you) get accepted can be rough. Just keep in mind that getting accepted to grad school is a crapshoot. Yes, it does matter what you profile/application looks like, but having a good profile will only get you into the top 30, 50? or whatever. And since only 5-15 candidates are accepted into any program its very possible to be an absolutely qualified candidate and still not be accepted. I know it still doesn't seem right given how similar you and your friend are in terms of your app, but hey, based on this article even small word differences in your SOP could be enough to change outcomes. Just remember, this is not about your self-worth. Ppl get denied to grad school for tons of very small reasons that having nothing to do with your quality as a candidate. My point is, yes it sucks. Yes, its natural to only feel pity for yourself and not be happy for her. First and foremost, don't feel bad for how you feel.

Checked and it looks like it went bust in 2010. Much earlier than I thought. From wikipedia it looks like they just did realty. -

I would reach out. If you have serious interest in the program it would be worth it. -

No, it's not rude, especially in this circumstance. As I read before, you can always call the department if you don't want your name associated with it (out of fear adcomms would be annoyed by it). I personally doubt they care much if you have a legit concern/question. With that said I can imagine if their response is brief and blunt as they are so busy. Oh and through email it might take a while. Anecdotally, I am on day four of waiting to get a response, but I kind of expected that. They are busy, and may simply not have an answer at this time for me. Just make sure you email/call the listed faculty/staff contact for these inquires and check any FAQ's page to see if they have info on when results will be announced. -

Can we keep the trash talk out of the results? Looking at you Stanford ppl. Whether you're bashing on others or just posting your opinion, no one cares. I just want to see results come in. Keep the results clean. -
Yep! I know that's why I have to work today. I was able to finagle getting a week and half off for Christmas because of how we moved holidays (and comp time) around.
-
I'm laughing pretty good now. i feel awful for you, but I understand what you are going for, so its one of those crazed, depressive sort of laughs. The only school I heard from was the one I expected to hear from last (rejected). Another school already sent out acceptances a couple weeks ago and I got no news. The last two schools have just been silent. I only have hope at one school, so I just want to get these rejections out of the way.

Haha even more interesting... I was just thinking how dead the results have been since Friday (of course this is just sociology). It was blowing up last week and now its really quiet. Even our acceptance/rejection forum is dead. Also nvm. Looks like class is in session. I work in a non-academic building so I don't stay tuned to this type of thing. Technically I am contractor too so I am even more out of touch than when I was a student here.
-
I work at a state school in PA. Students and faculty have off from what I understand. Staff (like myself) work.
-
Would you rather get a rejected on a Friday or a Monday? (poll!)
bandanajack replied to AnxiousNerd's topic in The Lobby
I said Monday because today is Monday and I am sick of waiting for results so maybe I'll get lucky and I will be rejected today. Yeah. That's where I am at. -

What a dreadfully slow weekend.... Talk about all quiet on the application front. -
From what I have read and what I am currently experiencing I believe this to be the case. One of my programs doesn't do an official waitlist from what I read, however the first round of acceptances went out and received nothing (its been more than a week). Rejections and a second round of acceptances would historically come 2-4 weeks after the initial results. Furthermore, one year people were placed on the waitlist as they got an email saying the department was having a funding issue. This however was the only year I believe people were officially notified they were on a waitlist. Again, from what I have observed on this website if you are silently waitlisted (neither rejected or accepted after results went out) my best guess is that your chances of acceptance are 1/3. That could be totally wrong for a million reasons, not least of which it depends on the program etc. However, my main point is that you still have a chance, even if its not a great one. I think you have a better chance when you are officially notified of waitlist because (again from what I have read and observed) that implies there is a formal shortlist. To anyone who reads this now or in the future, I cannot emphasize enough that this is just speculation and inference AND that any program may be different. So the only answer that I can really give is this 1) its a crapshoot 2) its not over till its over
