  1. That makes a lot of sense. I know that at least for some government jobs (EX: Foreign Service) it doesn't matter where you get your degree from, as long as you have one.
  2. Random question from what you said, does ranking matter much in the non-academic market place? Like in policy/government or think-tank work?
  3. Do you know if your intended supervisor is planning on leaving any time soon? If they are planning on staying for the next 5+ years then I would have to advise going to Madison. While I totally understand the desire for Irvine, and I totally agree that fit does outweigh some rank, I think that the 30 place difference is just too much. UW-Madison is a great school and will set you up to get a great job after. Im not saying that UC-Irvine isn't or won't set you up after, but as you've seen yourself, the placement record for Madison outdoes the one for Irvine
  4. Anyone else going crazy waiting for those last few decisions? I have one more to go, kinda pinning all my hopes and dreams on it, and the wait is killing me.
  5. Congrats on the admission!
  6. My bad, you're right. there are 4 IR professors.
  7. Thanks for the advice! I'll be sure to shoot them an email in the next coming months. And I did actually look into BU, but they only have one professor that I would want to work with, while BC has two different professors that I would love to work with. I thought it was really interesting that out of the 3 IR faculty at BC two of them are researching what I am interested in!
  8. Thank you so much for the reply and the suggestion! As the cycle dies down and the semester ends, i'll be sure to shoot one of the IR professors an email and ask about the program in general and the chance of an IR admit.
  9. So would you discourage IR or Comparative people from applying to BC? I'm looking at schools to apply for next cycle, and two out of the three IR faculty have really cool research and it connects to my area of interest, but I don't really want to waste the application if IR students have no shot in hell of getting in.
  10. Thanks! Honestly I was more interested in the Hebrew U of Jerusalem, so not a European school. I speak some Hebrew so I thought that a degree from there would be a good route. But i've been told by people familiar with the school that while it is a respected school, within the US it won't really help me all that mush with the academic market
  11. Thanks for the advise! honestly it really confirms what I thought and was afraid of. I think I was mainly looking at foreign schools because this cycle is looking like a dud for me, but I do have a few other non-academic options that I think ill pursue for the next year, re-work my application, and reapply next cycle. Thanks again!!!
  12. Was it from the DGS? Or your POI/someone you mentioned in your SOP?
  13. Maybe take that opportunity that you have to ask questions to set up a face-to-face meeting on your visit day? That way it doesn't seem like you don't have any questions, just that you'd rather ask them in person.
  14. Anyone know anything about Syracuse admissions decisions? It seems that the past few years they've either come out this past week, or the upcoming week.
  15. You can use this website to look up stipends, but keep in mind that they do change on a year by year basis, so just look at it as a general range of stipends http://www.phdstipends.com
  16. I emailed the DGS of a rejected program (OSU) and he got back to me the next day. But the DGS of Ohio is a generally awesome guy who seems to really care about students and applicants. He even read my file and made a reference to my POI (he was retiring at the end of this year, who knew) and offered some words of encouragement. I kind of have a feeling thought that he is an outlier, I contacted the DGS of another program I was rejected from and he responded with a generic email about the strength of their applicants and how they couldn't accept everyone who applied. So I guess what i'm trying to say is it depends? obviously you should wait until you get the official rejection, but after that I guess it depends on the program? I reached out and asked shortly after rejection and have found mixed results.
  17. nice, thanks for the info and for sharing your experience! Honestly a 10 point increase would be amazing, ill definitely look into that form of tutoring.
  18. Gotcha, gotcha. So that was effective then? like you felt that it did help to improve your score? Im thinking of doing either the Princeton review or the Kaplan online ones, if I do go the tutoring service route
  19. Thanks for the advice about Magoosh, i'll be sure to check it out! And I also agree that often times its the GRE that sets apart different applicants or at least gets your application looked at. While I completely hate the tests and that kind of stuff, I do recognize how it's used in application material. But I also know that while GRE's are important, other aspects of your application are equally if not more important. That is why besides the GRE retake and studying I've also re-written my SOP and selected a new (and much better) writing sample to be submitted.
  20. Did you do the online Kaplan, or the in-person classes?
  21. Thanks for the advice about Magoosh, ill be sure to check it out! And I am currently an undergrad finishing up my senior year, so finalizing my SOP and Writing sample now while I have access to the professors and resources just made the most sense to me. But I do totally get what you mean about taking time to re-center after the cycle before starting the new one
  22. Thanks for your advice! and I will probably check that out, before I do go out and spend that $1000. And I completely agree, the SOP and writing sample are hugely important. And i've already reworked my SOP and have a completely new writing sample that is hopefully going to be published in an undergrad research journal, so hopefully those two aspects are much better then last time. The GRE is just a major aspect and one that I can clearly pinpoint as being a problem, so thats why im trying to figure out ways to beat it.
  23. Thanks for the advice! and I did try it with a big book the first time, but honestly it didn't help at all, my math score was still pitiful. I was more asking about those pricey tutoring prep services. I am lucky enough to be in the financial situation where I can afford a $1000+ program if it brings results. I am afraid that a book simply wouldn't work with me again.
  24. Hey Guys, In your opinion what's the best GRE prep service? I'm looking to strengthen my profile for the next cycle and I think higher GRE's will do just that. The last time I took it I did fine on the V but bombed the Q, so i'm looking at prep services to get both up, but mainly focus on my Q grade. Anyone have any recommendations for good prep services? I've heard good things about Princeton Reviews, any one have any personal experience with it? or Kaplan? Thanks!
  25. @Me I've have two rejections, one waitlist, and two pending. Honestly i've written off the two pending as rejections as they have higher stats than the one rejection and the one waitlist. Ive applied to a number of jobs and actually have an interview set up on Friday. I figure if I don't get in this round i'll work for a year, retake the GRE (my weakest point) and then reapply next cycle. I already have a list of about 8 schools that I'd apply to.
