  1. @starkid I haven't gone to an in-person interview yet (being hopeful I will be invited!!). Nonetheless, I think I have some answers for you! Getting rejected after an interview weekend depends on the school. Some schools only invite you to interviews if you are accepted. Other don't, and with those, there is still a chance you get rejected. Some of the schools may have lab rotations, so that will allow room for you to establish a connection with a PI even after being accepted. However, you want to make those connections as soon as you can, in my opinion. If you are an asshole, I am unsure. If you are asshole to one of faculty members that are on the admissions committee, then you probably have a good chance of getting rejected. Probably best to just be good person in general. I am sure you are a good person, I am only suggesting that as a rule of thumb for everyone. I would highly suggest going, if you are accepted or not, but especially if you haven't been accepted. Not going might hurt your chances of getting accepted, unless you have a really good excuse for not going. There are no guarantees that the admission committee would care about the excuse, though. Additionally, going will allow you to connect with faculty and graduate students, let you see the campus in person, and help you figure out if you could spend 5+ years there. I have never heard of schools doing party weekends. I have only heard of having visits for PI interviews. They might have additional activities, like ice breakers or going to a local bar, you will get to do, but expect to do interviews for sure. I hope this helps! Good luck!
  2. One of my professors actually tried to. He was also my faculty advisor for my senior design project. Every time my teammates and I went into a meeting to update him on the project, he would ask what our future plans were. I would say that I am taking a gap year to apply to PhD programs. He always shook his head at this, saying I should go into industry. He especially didn't like the fact that I wanted to do my PhD program in biomedical engineering. He said too many people were getting PhDs, especially in that field. He said that I would get a bigger salary in the long run if I went to industry. He would ask us every time, I would say the same thing every time, and he would TRY to discourage me every time. It obviously didn't work because here I am getting worked up about getting into grad school. I honestly care less about the money. As long as I am getting compensated fairly in my future job, then I will be happy. I didn't become an engineer to be rich. I want to do research that will hopefully benefit people. I also want to challenge myself and get the gratification of successfully getting a PhD. Dr. also is a nice sounding prefix, but that's not really why I want to do it. I think it's sad when someone you look up to, like a professor, tries to get you out of doing something you want to do. Maybe they think what they are doing is for the best, but I don't think becoming rich is better than doing what I want. I am lucky that no else has discouraged me and I also fortunate to have a close family members that are academics. I am super thankful for their encouragement, because as made obvious by this thread, people don't get the support they need when it comes to pursuing higher education.
  3. @starkid Is the town that UD is in really that lame? How is it lame? I am wondering because I applied there for MSE.
  4. Thanks, I think I will! Ugggghhhh, this is literally worse than applying in my opinion!
  5. Possibly! I will PM you the employer. I am not sure if it is the best idea to do it so out in the open. I mean, I am sure it is fine, but since this isn't 100% definite, I feel weird saying to out in the open.
  6. ...You are having a phone interview at your dad's house while visiting him and his dogs start barking and you apologize a million times to the POI (interrupting her talking the first time just because you feel super bad but now even feel worse for interrupting). Then you get nervous, so you stop asking all the question you wanted to ask because the dogs are still barking. Gosh, what a great first impression I gave!
  7. Your applications looks great!! I second what @benmaterials said. Your GPA and GRE scores are a lot better than you think. You should look at my GRE scores. They are nowhere near as good as yours and I have been getting some phone/Skype interviews with people. So, try to keep your head up. Also, you have tons of amazing research experience in various places. You are also working at LANL, which is my dream job and is super amazing! You have two publications. You did research internationally, which is a bonus. Also, it's cool that you studied German! I think all the places you are applied to you have a good change in getting in and you don't need to apply to any safety schools. If you want to learn more about NC State, just let me know! Good luck!
  8. You totally got this! I mean, your GRE scores are perfect. You have a great GPA. You have research experience and a paper with your name on it, even if it is not close to first author. A famous planetary scientist is writing one of letters, which could only benefit your application. You application is awesome, so good luck and I hope you get in! If you don't, it would be their loss.
  9. Good point! I am probably not the only one who got an internship there since it seems like a big place with diverse research!
  10. This is me too! I never interviewed with them and I haven't heard anything from them after accepting.
  11. The results page is literally the worst seeing people get on-campus interviews to schools I applied to and just waiting, hoping, I get one. However, congrats @reeab! That's so awesome! I promise, I am not salty at all! I am just bitter for being so anxious about this and you should be super proud of yourself! Good luck to everyone and I hope we all get good news soon!
  12. Hi there! I sadly don’t know much about the transcript dilemma. I would contact someone at your current school and the PhD school(s) to explain the problem and see if this can be easily resolved. If it’s the same school, then that might make this easier. In the US, they only require your current transcript and then might ask for another when your final grades are out after graduating. I am not sure how it works in the UK, but I think it would be best to contact someone at your school and the schools you are applying to who can give you a better answer. With the gap year, I might be biased on this. I am currently taking a gap year. It has been great to have a break from school, let myself rest, travel a little, spend time with family, give me time to focus on applications, and figure out further my research interests. However, I am doing this this because PhDs in the US can last up to 7 years if you are unlucky, so I wanted to enjoy some free-time before I will never get it again. A gap year might be for you if: 1. You are feeling pretty tired after your masters and need a mental break from school 2. Want to do something big, such as travel or volunteer abroad, before going back to school 3. Still need to time figure out your interests 4. Want plenty of time to have good graduate school applications I hope this helps somewhat! Good luck!
  13. I think it’s totally fine to wear tennis shoes, especially given your circumstances. If someone doesn’t want to work with you because of your shoes, then I think that’s a red flag that their priorities are in the wrong place.
  14. They didn't have a Q&A because of problems with the chat, so email them or call them your questions (sorry about that @ray92!)
  15. @BGMFG The ppt isn't working on the webinar set-up, and make sure they your audio is connected by clicking the bottom left button.
  16. @BGMFGYes. There was a moment in which I didn't hear him.
  17. At least they are trying their with the technology they have. I feel bad for him.
  18. No prob! And Raleigh was an awesome place to live. Sadly don’t live there anymore after graduating. I know it is probably past the deadline, but the MSE department is pretty awesome at NC State, just FYI. The only reason I am not applying there is because I think it’s good to explore new places. I am rooting for you too!
  19. I believe so. I am not entirely sure, but that makes sense to me. I just think everyone will know by March 15th if they get a fellowship or not. Beyond that date will probably determine if you get a full or associate (just university sponsor) fellowship. Still no, but I will try to reach out to them soon if I don’t hear anything. Thanks for asking! Thanks! Two UConn and one UW phone interview. It’s getting exciting and I hope this is good news! I hope things are going well for you!
  20. New worries: I am scared if I am knowledgeable and mentally strong enough for grad school. I suffer from anxiety and I am worried it will get worse when I enter into my PhD program. New excitement: I’ve had two phone interviews already and I have another one next week. I might have two professor fighting for me at the same school (might create some awkwardness if I go there). I am now in the confirmation process of a fellowship I applied to. I possibly also have a summer internship at a national lab before entering grad school. Comparing my worries now to what they were a month ago, it’s crazy how much can happen in such a short amount of time. Keep your heads up! These are the worst months that we will endure during this process, and I hope all of you end up happy with the results in the end! Best of luck!
  21. Nice profile! I don’t think you will have any problems with getting into your other schools since you have already been accepted into quite a few and your application is amazing. Good luck with everything!
