  1. If you don't mind me asking, what field are you in? I would love going back to a Mac, but I am not sure if it is best computer for engineers. I originally used a Mac in high school and then was advised that PC were more commonly used by engineers, so I got one for college, but now I need a new one because I have put it through too much.
  2. I think it will definitely be tough getting back into the groove of work and classes and research, but my plan is to start learning new more about my research interests by reading research papers and watching YouTube videos. I’ve also started a science communication blog and Instagram blog so I can gain some connections and also learn more about the PhD experience so I can mentally prepare myself. But we honestly won’t really know until we start. But I feel like my first years of grad school would have been worse if I started right after undergrad, and it seems like it would have been the same for you. I was so unmotivated by the time I graduated, it would have been so bad to start off a new adventure that way, in my opinion. And yes, we did manage through undergrad, so we can get through grad school! Good luck to us!
  3. Hello there fellow MSE/BME/BioE applicant, I feel your pain as well! I really really really really want to hear back from UW BioE already! Like, commmme oonnnn, just reject me already! It’s fine if you hurt my feels, just pull off the band-aid so I can go ahead and eat my ice cream and cry it out. Also, there is nothing wrong with talking to strangers on the internet. I mean, there are scenarios in which it is obviously bad, but this is not one of those time. I feel like you all understand me better than my family and friends sometimes (although I do have some friends who applied or are in PhD programs right now, but you know what I mean). Some of family don’t even know what MSE means and they are probably tired of me talking about grad school apps, complaining about waiting, contemplating every option I may have after all results are out, etc, so it’s nice to find some fellow materials sciencist as well just fellow PhD applicant (aka waiting period suffers). I hope we hear from UW soon!
  4. Well, I accept both of your challenges and hope that you both get in somewhere with good funding!
  5. That's true. Boston was quite unexpected, but I am very grateful for being accepted. It is expensive to live there, but hopefully I can make it work on a tight budget and Boston seems like a really good school and the city seem awesome! It may be my only acceptance, but at least I have it. I am still holding out hope for you, @Ternwild. This will be your year!
  6. No, sadly. I think it can take awhile for the contracts to be written, I hope. I just got the letter of acceptance from the school, so we shall see!
  7. I am definitely afraid of this! I thought I was alone in feeling this, so thank you for opening up about this. Undergrad was so rough on me. Not only because it was tough, but because I was so tough on myself for trying to be perfect with my grades and getting internships and yada yada. Now with my gap year, I am learning to take time for myself and not be so hard on myself. However, getting into grad school, I know it is going to be harder than undergrad and I am afraid I am just going to go back to those bad habits, which will lead to major anxiety, panic attacks, and extreme lack of motivation. Hopefully, though, this break has been good for us and prepared us in some way (resting out brains??) for the Mount Everest that is grad school.
  8. For me, Boston University told me of my acceptance. I then checked GEM the next day and it said that I have been accepted there. I think some people have gotten an acceptance on GEM without receiving an acceptance email from the school yet, though.
  9. I agree with @ray92 on this one. I am sure it is a frustrating seeing everyone get sponsors. That used to be me. Heck, that used to be all of us and I feel like there are definitely still people waiting to get sponsorship. You should definitely still have hope!
  10. I am definitely am on the same boat as you. I applied to PhD programs to University of Florida and University of Michigan for biomedical engineering and Cal Tech for medical engineering, and they have interviews and I didn't get invited. :'''''''((((( I am sure there are others schools that I don't know about, too. I honestly don't know what that means when this happens, but I am still trying to be hopeful. I am going to keep my head up (with tears in my eyes) until they tell me that I have been rejected.
  11. Your application looks great! Congrats on being accepted to Minnesota and your interview with Oxford. I sadly have no idea about UIUC and Wisconsin. Good luck, though!
  12. I am going to enjoy my freedom from work until the beginning of June. After June, I am going to do a summer internship, which I am excited about but I am dreading getting back into work mode. I am thankful to have gotten the internship, however!
  13. I hope this year goes better for you! You definitely have a good application. Good luck!
  14. I’d say take time for yourself. I can attest that rest is important, especially when you are about to start a long and challenging journey. I am currently taking a gap year, and I don’t regret it one bit.
  15. I’m sorry schools haven’t seen your potential in the past, but I hope they see it this round. (I know I don’t know you, but I am sure you deserve a spot in grad school!)
  16. I see. I apologize about that. I am cheering for you, and keeping my fingers crossed for good news from Yale.
  17. Wow, congrats! This is awesome! Yay! Happy for you! Yeah, this means you are officially a fellow now!
  18. I didn’t apply to Yale and I don’t know how their particular process works, but I think now that you have an interview, make the most of it when you are there. Get to know the professors who interview you, if it’s one person at a time. Talk to grad students, make connections. If you really like that program, try to make sure you seem really interested in the program and that you fit there. I think your interactions during the interview will be very important with your acceptance.
  19. I need advice on new computers as well! Preferably a PC since engineers typically use those, but I love Macs as well. @thetruewalkingwoman Thank you for making this post! My laptop is struggling as well. It got me through undergrad and now my gap year, but my touchpad won't allow me to click anything (thank goodness for my bluetooth mouse!).
  20. I would try to get an industry internship. I think it would be a good experience to have alongside your experience with academic research. Money plus experience is always a good combination in my opinion. I don't know where you live, but you could try contacting start-ups in your area related to tissue engineering or materials characterization.
  21. @empress_empiria Thank you! I did a skype interview and just like everyone else, I hope I get accepted. My skype interview wasn't that great because my dad's dogs were barking in the background, which made me super nervous....
  22. Oh no, I am so sorry :(.
