  1. I've been in grad school for a while now and I still feel like I'm not getting anywhere with my degree/professional development and am maybe even getting dumber as time goes on? Largely because I have been stuck on one project for so long that was meant to only take a short while at the very beginning of my PhD but has taken MUCH longer to complete, and it's really crushing my spirit. And because it has crushed my spirit so, I just have such a hard time finding motivation to complete my experiments. Of course this plus the pandemic just completely burned me out for a while and I only recently have felt like I've started to recover. But I'm still not fully there, and definitely not recovered enough to feel excited again about this project I once was so so SO excited about doing. So I'm just trudging through these experiments, getting a fraction of the data I needed to achieve the impact I wanted to with the paper, all to get this presentation/publication out of the way so I can start fresh with a new study that will hopefully revive my love of science and research.
  2. I have a similar concern. I was admitted to my top choice PhD program, but the admission letter stated that funding was not guaranteed. On the eGEM portal, my status for this university is still "Applied" and not "Willing to Admit as a GEM Fellow", which has appeared for a couple of other universities I have been admitted to. I have been trying to get in contact with the university's GEM representative for some time now to see when I might hear back about this, but they haven't responded to my emails. I have contacted through eGEM and regular e-mail. I called the GEM consortium to ask if I could expect to receive a GEM offer from this university now that I have accepted an employee sponsorship. They said that there is a possibility that, even though I have been admitted, the university might not want to sponsor me as a GEM Fellow. I don't know what the likelihood of this is happening, but I do hope I get a response soon given that April 15th is just two weeks away ?. On the other hand, I received the admissions offer not too long ago, and the two GEM offers I do have on eGEM are from universities that admitted me a very long time ago, so maybe it just takes a while to process.
  3. Does anyone happen to know what the music scene is like in the Berkeley area? For example, are there venues like jazz bars or coffee shops that host small shows? Maybe places with open mic nights?
  4. @Moods@ray92 Thanks guys! I'm really excited
  5. Hey everyone! Update on my situation: I was finally selected! It took a few weeks but I think this is because my company was looking at a lot of potential GEM Fellows. I got the impression that maybe they were expecting me to send them a follow-up saying that I was interested in the position, so I would give that as advice for anyone who has been contacted by their employer but not yet selected. I was also admitted to my first choice school (yay! :D) so I guess that means I'm a fellow once I accept the offer? Good luck again everyone! Hope it works out for all of us in the end.
  6. ~ Dark matter ~
  7. @K Alex I think I've read somewhere in this thread that it can help, but I never applied to any positions. They just saw my GEM application (because I'm assuming GEM threw it at them lol) which includes the resume and they gave me a call. I've only had one interview though.
  8. So @ anyone who has been selected by an employer, how long did it take for you guys to hear back about being selected? Not sure who I saw saying that they saw their status change immediately after the call, but did it take anyone else longer? I had a phone call last week that I thought went well and I sent a thank you e-mail, but I haven't heard anything else about it since. I'm dyin here ;-;
  9. Hi everyone, I'm a little nervous here. I was invited as a "top applicant" (PhD in Mechanical Engineering) to visit a highly selective school, expenses paid, but I have not yet been admitted. After scouring through these forums, I've just about confirmed that they can still reject me after the visit, so I want to be as prepared as possible. I still don't have all the details, but there are several individual meeting sessions with faculty which I assume are going to be like interviews. These sessions are each scheduled for three whole hours, which is a terrifyingly long time to have to impress a faculty member for. How on Earth do I prepare for these meetings? Practice talking about my research experience? Read up a ton about theirs? Fall asleep buried under piles of recent relevant journal publications with the hope that the knowledge will diffuse into my brain? Something else I haven't thought of? And then there's the dress code. I, a lady?‍♀️, was planning on bringing business casual pants and tops with a blazer to carry around just in case. My biggest concern here is my ear piercings. I don't have a million of these, but I do have a few more than the single lobe piercings most people have. I usually just keep a subtle stud in these in more professional situations, and I've never had any issues. But would it be wiser to not wear anything in them at all? I would really appreciate any help with this. I really want to attend this school!
  10. Wow I have no idea how I didn't see that the first time around @ray92 ?Glad I checked this forum! Thank you! And I would rather stay as anonymous as possible so I don't think I will be sharing which schools specifically.
  11. @ray92 Thanks! I've got my fingers crossed for sure. Waaaait what powerpoint? I don't remember getting any powerpoint =[
  12. Hi everyone! Just found this forum and wanted to add to the chat with my own status as another reference for people. I'm applying for PhD and have been admitted to one program so far. I was on Matched for a few eternal weeks and stopped checking after a while because I was going insane lol. I recently had my first interview with an employer and then checked to see that my status had been changed to Held so who know for how long that's been there. I'm hoping the webinar on Monday clears up what we're supposed to do on our end of the recruitment process. Congrats to everyone who has been hearing good news! I looked through the forum and saw some very positive things =] EDIT: Also, Only 2/8 schools I have applied to so far have confirmed that my status through GEM, for anyone who might be interested
