  1. Furthermore, my mother a former English teacher, didn’t want me to major in English, which is just wild to me
  2. I feel like my parents secretly want me to go to law school, but I’m really not into it. There are a couple of Masters of Arts in teaching programs that have late deadlines I’m considering applying to in the worst case scenario. I don’t wanna talk about that possibility for two more weeks at least though lol
  3. Is anyone else like concerned about where they'll be when they receive news on their decisions? I'm currently working weekends and am a bit concerned about getting any kind of news while I'm at my job.
  4. I wish I'd thought of the weather myself. I just found out Northwestern was closed today and doesn't reopen until noon tomorrow. I sat around all day in anticipation from nothing lol
  5. I'm not familiar with Cassuot. I'll have to check out his work! I'll warn you The Hansom Cab is a bit dry. I'll be honest with you; I found it less enjoyable as a novel, as it's very dry and about 100 pages too long in my opinion. It's more interesting as a case study in the circulation of literary genres in the British colonies and for what it reveals about Melbourne in the C19.
  6. My writing sample places the Fergus Hume's 1886 Australian detective novel The Mystery of a Hansom Cab into conversation with Wilkie Collins' The Moonstone and argues that racist and orientalist depictions of people of color in works of popular fiction at the end of the nineteenth century emerged as generic features of popular fiction subgenres--particularly at the intersection of sensation and detective fiction. In contrast to The Moonstone, which plays on readers' imperialist sympathies with the intention of subverting them, Hume's novel uses racist caricatures of Asian immigrants in order to heighten the scandal of his novel's sensation plot. I also draw attention to the specific historical efforts to marginalize and discriminate against Asian immigrant groups in Australia at the close of the 19th century, critiquing the ways in which xenophobia began to emerge in popular fiction. Ultimately, The Hansom Cab anticipates the emergence of Australian Asian invasion fiction in the 1890s and the xenophobic turns in the detective fiction of Great Britain (as emblematized by Doyle's The Sign of the Four). These texts of invasion emerged at a time when the fantasy of British colonial hegemony began to falter and demonstrate that Australian colonials (as well as other colonists of British origin in various locales) on the brink of independence began to take on the anti-POC mindset of their imperialist forerunners.
  7. A bleak, but funny thought. Graduate school admissions in the humanities is like Grindr inasmuch as radio silence a rejection of your advances ?
  8. To the above posters, I think the rule suspension came at a convenient time inasmuch as it saved Valentina. I thought the double win lip sync should have been Naomi and Gia, but I think the Latrice lip sync was a close second. I’m struggling with Latrice at the moment because she is coming off as way more condescending in this season than in her original season. She has this air about her like she’s above the fray somehow even though everyone remaining has outperformed her so far. My top two right now are Manila and Monet/Trinity. I’ll stan Manila Luzon until I die. As for season 11, I’m most excited for Silky, Yvie, and Nina!! Anyone else have any early faves?
  9. I hate to be the person that introduces ~yet another~ tangent in one 24 hour period, but did anyone else see the Drag Race season 11 cast announcement today?
  10. This is random, but has anyone else listened to Vampire Weekend's new music yet?
  11. I just noticed something weird. When I type "school name english" into the results search bar, it's yielding 0 results. These search terms were working as recently as last night. Is anyone else having this issue?
  12. Is there an exhaustive list somewhere of places that interview literature PhD applicants somewhere on Grad Cafe? I’ve been looking and can’t seem to find one. If a school does interview is it usually listed on its website somewhere?
  13. I saw Bianca in DC in March; such a powerhouse of talent. I most recently saw Jinkx and DeLa's holiday tour, which came to DC as well!
  14. I'm so excited to find Drag Race fans in this thread! Reply with your three favorite Drag Race queens; my faves are BenDeLaCreme, Manila Luzon, Bob the Drag Queen!
  15. Not to belittle your experience but you made me think of this video lol...
  16. Got a call from Houston today; I thought it was Rice calling me, but it was just a robocall about health insurance ??
  17. This whole waiting game is starting to get to me too; my best friend from undergrad got into two chemistry PhD programs this week; seeing her get decisions so early is making me antsy!! (Even though I know literature programs usually announce later)
  18. @dilby I’m forever using Ghibli movies as pick-me-ups as well lol (especially Whisper of the Heart, From Up on Poppy Hill, and My Neighbor Totoro)
  19. If you look at the screen cap I shared it says “not official” (I too sent official score reports; if I didn’t have to do that for CUNY, I’m mad!! I want my 27 dollars back, ETS!)
  20. I would definitely encourage you to email the department. I don't know if this is at all helpful, but I submitted my application on December 28th and it wasn't registered as complete until January 7th. I think it's feasible that their system might just be delayed if you didn't submit your application until the day it was due or something. I'll paste a screen cap below for reference.
  21. Having time to read really is ~so~ refreshing. We’re expecting about 8 inches of snow in my part of Maryland; I’m currently bundled up on the couch with a cup of coffee and Middlemarch
  22. Hi all, I'm just stumbling onto this community (better late than never I suppose!!). I finished my BA in May 2018; I'm applying for the Fall 2019 admissions cycle. My big interests are in the circulation of the Victorian novel in British colonies, 19th C colonial politics, ecocriticism, and genre studies.Good luck everyone!
