After being told by my POI at my top program choice I was first on the waitlist and I'm number two on the waitlist at my second choice program. But in all seriousness I really hope I can nab a spot at my first choice. I still am hoping, but trying to be cautiously optimistic as I'm sure all of y'all are as well.

I have been told that Michigan State’s Communication admissions committee (not Media & Information) has made their decisions, but I don’t know if they sent out any acceptances yet. I imagine everyone will hear something soon.

I heard the same, and that they're looking for funding for students so that's why they're taking a bit to send out offers. But yea, I think (based on history on the Results page) we may here by the end of this week...

I just got home from my interview. I'm still shaking off the anxious nausea. Somehow I'm more stressed after than before. ?

How did you guys feel coming out of it? Were they super hard to read?

I think it just depends on your interviewers. Some like to be stoic others may show more emotion. I would say you most likely did better than you thought, but its human nature to focus on maybe what you did so well and so you start to think the worst. You just gotta fight your human nature (easier said that done I know). But try to keep positive, if you got an interview, you deserved it, and you are a top candidate. So own that.

hey! Congrats on your acceptance! Just want to check it out, you already heard from Cornell right?

I am on the waitlist for Cornell (and Utah) as of now. Only acceptance is at University of South Carolina School of Public Health, but with great faculty who have Health Comm expertise, so I am happy for that!

One of my potential advisors wrote me a pretty long detailed email about the process and told me to seriously hold on, that he's "hopeful" a spot will open up for me. What just sucks is that he told me any other year, I probably would have gotten an outright offer, but this year they had to seriously be more conservative with offers. So again, I'm really hoping haha (Help me baby Jesus)

Hey I see you applied for Maryland! I am waiting for their decision. I didn't get an interview though, so I am kind of concerned. Do they interview everyone? I have a 4.0 on my undergrad and a 4.0 on my Master's. Good Verbal GRE and not so good Quantitative. Good recommendation letters, lots of teaching experience, but no publications/conferences. How competitive is the Communications PhD program at Maryland? Do you know when they'll send out offers? Feel free to email me.. fjf9208@louisiana.edu

Hey @fjf2019 I did apply and interview with Maryland about two weeks ago. I'm not 100% sure if they interview everyone, I thought it was kinda crazy that I got an interview so quickly after I applied (since their deadline was Jan 7th). I've heard the Maryland Comm PhD is pretty competitive.

All the Comm programs I've applied to (from what I've heard from them and the grapevine [other students, faculty, etc]) have said they have more limited resources this year to make offers. Not sure if they are planning for an economic recession, and maybe are just trying to be preemptive for that. I think Maryland should be making decisions soon as UPenn and some of the other top programs should be making final decisions soon.

Anyone else desperate to get off of a waitlist? :( I know I need to be patient, especially since this school hasn't had their interview weekend yet, but still...

@sgaw10 sooo desperate. I got waitlisted on my top two programs after interviews. Its I would say more stressful to be on the waitlist than just getting an outright rejection. Ugh. I just want it to be closer to the deadline so people can make up their minds.

Evening everyone! I'm a potential applicant for  PhD programs next year if things don't work out this year. I'm also planning to pursue a dual-title phd in communication at one of the schools I applied to this year. Any places I can use to look for phd programs that specialize in health comm/intercultural comm/social networks?

    Thank you in advance!

Hey! I actually just finished applying for Comm PhDs with a focus in Health Comm. Now my list is probably a little different, but I'd suggest looking into 4 programs in particular that have strong Health Comm emphasis: Cornell, Utah, Maryland and Michigan State. But as other folks mentioned above there's a lot of options and the health comm focus may be hidden elsewhere.

    Good luck!

  8. Totally agree with all of you. I have one offer, and don't get me wrong, I'm extremely grateful, but basically the other two programs I've been waitlisted for were my top two. So it kinda just sucks, cause I have to wait to see if a spot opens at one of the places while letting South Carolina know I can't make a decision really until the end of March when I have a better idea if I'll have a shot at the other programs.

Additionally, I'm still waiting on a few programs, but man, of course its my top three that torment me like this for now.

Good luck to everyone else on their offers. It will get better, but I just understand where y'all are coming from (had to go through this for MPH 6 years ago).

  9. Hey, thanks for starting this @Izakawa. How are y'all planning on playing this out? I got waitlisted at Cornell for a Communication PhD and its really a strong fit for me. Are y'all just going to wait until April 15th and if a spot opens up take it? I was kinda bummed cause I was hoping to get an opportunity to fly out to Ithaca (on Cornell's penny rather than my own preferably) to visit and really see if it as strong a fit as I think (compared to other programs I have been to a met with faculty, Cornell I've had good convos with faculty but kinda want to meet other students, see the facilities and get a better sense of the program you know?)

Obviously still waiting on word from other programs (got one acceptance, and interviewed with two [Cornell being one] got waitlisted from them). I'm still waiting on word from 7 other programs. Curious to know what y'all thinking of working with the waitlist situation.

Congratulations on your admission letter and I'm in the same situation as you (but still waiting for results..) I studied Biology in Bachelors and Health Communication in Masters (both outside the US though), and this year I also applied for PH & Comm programs.

I was wondering if I could send a love letter to some of the schools since I didn't receive anything yet. In the C.V. I mentioned a conference paper under review by ICA 2019 committee, and now its accepted. Shall I inform them of this?

I would wait until you interview to let them know your ICA paper was accepted. Unfortunately, thats the only time you can really sell anything you did between application deadlines and getting offers/rejections.

Does anyone know that is it true that Cornell will interview every short-listed candidate before sending them offers? Still no interview invitation...

Hey y'all, sorry to join so late. I interviewed with Cornell a week ago and just got an email yesterday saying I'm on the waitlist for now. They said they had to be more conservative this year on offers due to limited resources in the department. So fingers crossed, that would be a really great opportunity.

I'm kinda an odd one out just FYI, I have a Master in Public Health but looking to cross over into Comm, specifically Health Comm, so it could have helped me or hurt my chances.  I also applied to Public Health PhDs too, so I could be anywhere next year.

Anyone apply for the PhD programs at the University of Utah, the University of New Mexico, or the University of South Florida? It looks like none of them notify until February, according to the postings from last year. Also, I've heard of some ~drama~ at UNM that is impacting their PhD students, so I'm curious what anyone else has heard. UNM has a weird program, to say the least, but it intrigues me assuming it's functional.

Seems like this forum is pretty focused on the big name comm schools on the east coast and midwest, so curious to hear from people who didn't apply to those!

I also applied to Utah as my partner is out there finishing her PhD in Political Science, it looks like next week we should hear back from them.

19 Fall Communication/Public Health PhD application

Applied: Utah (Comm) / Cornell (Comm) / Maryland (Comm) / Michigan State (Comm) / Johns Hopkins (PH) / South Carolina (PH) / North Carolina (PH) / Harvard (PH) / Vanderbilt (Other)

    Interviewed: Maryland / Cornell

     Waitlist: Cornell

    Accepted: South Carolina

Rejected: Johns Hopkins (Presumed, friend applied to same program and got an interview invitation)
