  1. Lee Edelman's No Future: Queer Theory and the Death Drive and José Esteban Muñoz's Cruising Utopia: The Then and There of Queer Futurity are two seminal texts in recent(ish) debates in queer studies about the social and the antisocial. Mari Ruti brings these together quite thoughtfully in her recent book The Ethics of Opting Out: Queer Theory's Defiant Subjects. Hope that helps
  2. Hey everyone! I was wondering if people who've gone through the visa interview process can give some advice on what to expect during the interview at the US embassy/consulate. What kinds of questions are asked, and how soon do you get the visa after the interview? Thanks in advance
  3. Hey everyone ? So I'll be moving to the US this fall to start grad school. Any advice or reads on how to pack your life into two suitcases? How do you decide which books you'll be bringing with you?
  4. International students! How are you deciding which of your books you absolutely have to bring with you to grad school in the US? Too many of my books spark joy, and definitely not enough luggage space ?
  5. Hey, I was wondering if you could tell me a little more about this? What company did you use and how long did it take? I'll also be moving to the US from faaaar away (South Africa) this fall and would really love to take a big chunk of my library with me. Do you think it'll be cheaper just to buy new copies of the books I really want when I'm in the US?
  6. Bumping up this thread, 'cause I'd also like to know if this exchange actually happens or if it's only something that's there to look good on paper.
  7. On the subject of prestige, I'm curious, as an international student, to hear about Northwestern's reputation. Is it considered a top school/English department, or rather, what are some of its peer institutions?
  8. At least they notified you? Haha. I checked the portal after seeing the results board and got the same callous one-liner. Oh well ?‍♂️
  9. Thank you for this. I think this is a really productive way for me to be thinking about grad school ?
  10. Belated congratulations to all the Rutgers acceptances! ??
  11. Taking this to heart, though easier said than done sometimes. Thank you for your response and reminder ?
  12. How competitive/cutthroat are some of these top programs? How do you deal with feeling like an imposter/not good enough all the time?
  13. Brown acceptance on the board. Let the anxiety begin... ??

  15. Thanks, @WildeThing! The acceptance letter that I was emailed is dated 18 February though, so who knows what's happening. I hope you'll hear from them soon though ?
  16. GOT ACCEPTED AT UPENN! I'm still in disbelief. Got a phone call from the DGS, so seems like UPenn isn't closed today after all?
  17. Haha. Yeah, same here. I really just want to know now, even if it's a rejection. This waiting/not-knowing is exhausting ?
  18. I've run out of "reactions" for today, but still wanted to say thank you to @NoodleKidoodle and @Ramus for such thoughtful and honest responses. This really helps me think about the kinds of things I should be asking/looking out for during the department visit.
  19. New week, same anxieties ?? Good luck, everyone! I hope we all get the news that we want this week ?
  20. Listening to podcasts to get my mind off the last of the admissions decisions. What are some of your favourite literature or critical theory-related podcasts? My two favourites are Always Already Podcast https://alwaysalreadypodcast.wordpress.com/ and Writers & Company https://www.cbc.ca/radio/writersandcompany.
  21. I'm curious: is Rutgers the one school everyone applied to? ???‍♂️ Also, any fellow Northwestern admits here going to the visiting weekend? I look forward to meeting you all ?
  22. Congratulations to those who got acceptances today ?? Can Rutgers, UPenn, and Brown make up their minds now already? ??
