  1. Hi friends, I've done some more searching and I think I've reached a good number of schools that I want to apply to. Thought I'd share these with you here! Social-Personality programs: - UMN PIB - UC Berkeley - UC Davis - U Missouri - U Michigan Ed Psych: - UT Austin Clin Psych: - U British Columbia (MA)
  2. Not sure I'm in the best place to give any advice, but I always put my mental health first when doing research, because I cannot produce anything of quality if I am not mentally well. I'm saddened to hear about what you're going through. It sounds like you have tried to be direct with them but they have not reciprocated. I don't know of easy 'maneuvers' to change how advisors treat students- when I have seen a change in an advisor's behaviour in a positive direction, it was very gradual, taking several years. Have you talked to grad students who have the same advisor? If there are ones more senior, some may have thought of workarounds. I'm not sure how exams work at grad school- does this mean you are several years into your PhD? Can you clarify what you mean by it seeming pointless to transfer/acquire a different advisor?
  3. I am grateful for you taking the time to type out your experiences. First off, glad to hear that your program is going great. I am definitely relying largely on my 'image of the program/prof' in my decisions. I will most likely be expanding my search and leaving my decisions to the visits ? Re: visits, I know it's quite early to ask this, but I am aware different programs have 'visiting weekends'; given my location, I can probably only afford one short-ish trip to the U.S during which I complete all of my visits- do you or others you know if, in general, these individualised visits are possible?
  4. I'm in the same boat as Fabretti- in addition to the research at UMN being exciting, I feel like I'd be able to spend time improving my applications (esp. reading papers by relevant faculty) if I only apply to 1-3 schools. Would be great to hear your thoughts about this ?
  5. Hi everyone! I thought it would be great to make a thread for us- most other fields already have one ? What areas are you interested in? What schools are you applying to (POIs)? What are you worried/excited about? Let's support each other! Feel free to also post your stats! A little about me: I'm applying for the first time after my 4-year (3 years undergrad- 1 year postgrad) degree finishes this year, as an international student from Oceania. My interests are quite broad but they include personality, cognitive neuroscience, close relationships, self-esteem and self-compassion, clinical psych.. Currently, I only have one school in mind: University of Minnesota (POI: CD), which is a very good fit for me as they do personality neuroscience and close relationships research. I'm open to applying for more schools depending on research fit. What about you?
  6. Looks great to me- seems to me like you're an all-rounder ? On your worries: - Not enough research: being a PI is great; you have quite a few posters/powerpoint presentations which is a plus - Not enough publications: Correct me if I'm wrong, but most people do not have publications before starting their PhD; just wondering, what do you mean by "in progress" (drafting, written, submitted for review, in review, etc.)? - Low undergrad GPA: you've shown with your Masters GPA that when you do focus on your academics you can do very well. I wouldn't be too worried about this if I were you. Good luck!
  7. Your Verbal score is pretty good- the 3.5 on the AWA might be a bit low, but I've heard some schools don't care as much about that score. I think what you do would depend on which Masters programs you're applying to- but if a Clinical Psych PhD program is your ultimate goal, I'd think it would be good to invest some time in raising your Verbal/AWA scores further to be competitive for that round (and not have to worry about the GRE when applying then)- as scores are valid for 5 years. Hope that helps! Oh- and as a Psych major, I found studying for the Psych GRE engaging (not as painful as the General test). A decent amount of schools do require it so if you have time, it would be good to take that test too.
  8. Oh, I see. I hope we both get there!
  9. Hi- I am also a big fan of him and I'm applying for Fall 2020 to the UMN PIB PhD too. Good luck!
  10. Hi, If I ask my recommenders to write LORs to, say, 8 schools, would they have to put in considerable work to edit each LOR to fit individual schools? If so, I may consider reducing the number of schools I apply to. I am interested in applying to Psychology PhDs- I heard there was a shared system for LORs between business schools, but couldn't find any for Psych. Thanks!
  11. Hi! Yep, I'm based in Oceania and planning to apply for the first time for Fall 2020 entry.
  12. Hi pineapplepizza, Congratulations! How are you going with those things? I'm applying for Fall 2020, and the PIB program at UMN is one of my top choices atm- I see your program is personality psychology, is that the area you're going to attend?
