^Thank you, friend and congratulations!

I don't think they've made the list public, actually. One of our members was just savvy enough to encounter it. Hm, my name is not on either list and I must admit...I don't feel terribly low at all. It might be because I don't have a history with this process. It mostly might be that I think anything is possible until the final results are out since we are just speculating now.To be sure, if I do not get any acknowledgement, I'd be really miffed since I sincerely believe that my research and teaching goals perfectly align with the initiatives to increase diversity of underrepresented student groups...as a many of us believe. Basically, what I'm saying is that it ain't over for me until I get a rejection notice LOL. And then there is next year. On another note: Anyone else just know that someone is going to call the Ford office today and asks about these lists they see online? EDIT ----> I meant to say that they will call to confirm if these are final. If someone does, spread the news. I'm currently rooting for one of my homies to get off the Dissertation List because we study similar groups :-)

^ Now lets not jump to conclusions here! Only one list has moved after all.
-
I'm not on this list either...lol oh, but I know like 3 people on the list. I'm sure this one will get update too though LOL
-
ROFL!!! Well, I am not on the list either, but I am super happy that "Education Research" is now on the Predoctoral competition list! Maybe this is the list of people they have notified. Although I am anxious to hear back...but this is still hilarious. Oh yeah - I'm sure this is not everyone because I was once told by an awardee that the common problem is that there are so many amazing people and so few slots....sometimes, it is a matter of luck ::shrugs:: thus, we can be sure that all of those slots are going to be filling up.

^ Safferz that is awesome! 8 lbs - of fat for me is a dress size or two!! HS grad: 125 End of sophomore year: 145 UG grad: 138 MA: 127 MA grad: 137 Current: 152 By no means do I look really overweight, but I'm also a small-framed person (5'0) and there are implications for my health at lower numbers...and not to mention bad for my ego. The fluctuations in weight means I have to invest in different sizes of clothing since I need to look like a professional as I worked throughout my academic career. I keep track of my waist and hip measurements and pay more attention to those numbers too. The numbers may not mean a lot to other people, but we all have body/weight ideals that we want to be at - and that's personal. I'd love to know what other shorties/small-framed people are doing to lose weight.

Thanks sassy_grad that was very informative especially the insider information from a reader. A week? It looks like might be even later than that. Ah well.

They email ppl on Fridays ...I happen to be a Monday - Thursday snob. I wish someone from the social sciences would comment. But I don't really understand the discipline division. For some reason alphabetical order makes more sense. Actually, if we think about - they are only emailing 60 PEOPLE to offer awards, right? That's doable in one day if there is an email template. Is this your first application season? I'd be curious to know if anyone has received any other type of notification letter other than acceptance.

Wah! Well that just makes me anxious. lol. Dang...our fates are sealed...strong feelings here.
-
I dislike grad school happy hours. Well, I am not a fan of happy hours in general.
-
haha! pears - agreed - those taboo fields are really tasty and what a waste for others to throw the yummy parts away!

I love balut eggs. I can knock away half a dozen (don't wanna look like a glutton) by myself with a durian shake. Guess that would be an unpopular thing that people hate that I love LOL Balut eggs are a favorite form of night time street food when I go back to the homeland...in addition to peppered snail in the day time LOL
-
LOL just saw your post in the parallel thread to this one 'bout pho - personally, pho is like Asian Chicken Soup. I get mad AZN street cred for liking durian as an American born Asian.

I am applying for a summer language study and was told it was prestigious also to have it on your CV. I'm not doing a foreign language studies degree but need to study a language well in order to conduct research.

New York City - smells like pee in the very congested areas that show "Lost" - ppl asked me if I didn't watch it because others liked it...i just didn't watch it because I didn't like it also Bacon - the texture is wonderful but the taste is not that great plus its greasy Pizza - its aight Comedies (movies/shows) Beer - surrounded by peers who like Beer... Bread - just not a huge fan

I'm of Asian descent, and my siblings and I have to vigilantly watch our weight because we gain weight quite easily. But then again we've never been thin ppl...although our parents are thin ppl. Grad school has made it harder to eat a variety of food for me since this new place I'm in has a narrow selection of Asian food. I use that app too - trying to use it diligently. Certainly, offers insight into how many calories one is eating!

Those words would shatter my self-confidence and overall worth as a human being. And then I'd get over it. Actually, when I was applying to grad school, I had an advisor that told me that I'm not "academically rigorous" enough to apply to the program that I am currently in...and funded. Now, I have only heard of PIs that push their students on to other professors after having accepted them into the program (irresponsible).
-
I have gained about 10 lbs...and that is really troubling for a short person. The kicker is I don't eat that much and all my weight gain is going to my stomach! In my entire adult life....life, period...this is the last place I ever gain weight!!! It is very disturbing and I've been keeping a food log and exercise log. For all my monitoring - it could be belly fat from stress.
-
I found this thread to be extremely helpful! Thanks, y'all. Some of these evaluations really stay with you no matter how ridiculous they are. I had a former student who took issue with studying with an Asian person ::shrugs:: ...in a literature review class... he suggested future classes be taught by a native speaker of standard English.

I already told my advisor I'll try again also lol Wait, so we hear back in April right? I've applied for the FLAS to get summer funding...which I'm sure is announced in April too.
-
I applied for the pre-doc one. For some reason, I'm not very anxious. I think it's because mine's was a long shot application or at least I consider it to be. I applied as a first year student. However, I'm sure I will be disappointed if I don't get it lol but I'm certainly not hedging and bets or making any plans that include this funding source.

Hello, I am afraid I cannot answer the tax questions. You are best contacting your department coordinator. I, and a couple of others, have posted our stats and information on the City Guide thread about Madison - I'd link you, but I don't know how. -
I'm a tropical person...my roots and adult life has mostly been spent in monsoon-type climates (so there is like, hot, hotter, and wet). I have been told that this has been one of the worst winters Madison has seen for some time...and frankly, I dealt with the weather quite decently due to my very nice knee-length down coat. I stayed indoors but I am an in-doorsy type person, but I still went grocery shopping (walked, bus), and maintain a social life somewhat when friends are in town...but I guess, it's a mentality? For me, it is what it is. Not knocking the cold or anything, but you do get used to it. It's just takes some of us a while. I must say that when the wind is not so biting, the city is a nice and comfortable place to go for a walk - no honking, cussing, creeping cars/drivers.

^ Depends on how you live. If you have roommates, don't have other expenses besides rent and utilities such as credit card bills, or car payments, or a shopping/drinking habit - I think a single person will be okay. You will probably have to budget wisely on food, room and board, books, and entertainment expenses. Your stipend is about the amount that grad students in some fields make (in between thereabout). So there are people who make less than you and get by.
