  1. Uhm. I didn't do any of those. Actually, I almost didn't graduate from high school cause of "behavioral problems" which ended up being night school. No extracurricular activities in high school cause I had to work the night shift. Nothing on the weekends because I had to work. No internships during the summer cause I had to work. Oh, I was just an attendant at a gas station and I worked odd jobs at a local mom and pops "everything store" for lower than minimum wage. Also, dreams of college? Sure, I guess. But I didn't even know what the SAT was until like 11th grade. However, I was a voracious reader if that counts for anything.
  2. I'm an introvert myself, but certainly not shy. Frankly, sometimes we just need to want someone bad enough to be willing to make ourselves vulnerable in front of them. At least that tango guy was honest!
  3. I must now save up my meager stipend and accumulate hours in my part-time job to get this bag.
  4. oOoOoOh update, yay! I been surprised at the amount of gossip going around in my dept - like who has hooked up with who - the revelation of this news has turned me off to the one or two single guys in the dept. I'm not interested in being fodder for gossip of this sort cause the peepo talking were not very nice ...I'm glad this board is anonymous lol
  5. I am female. I have lived with guy and girl room mates. Hmmm...my girl room mate kept eating my food and drinking my chocolate soy milk and that made me mad. She was also catty, or perhaps, I was too (most likely). The boys...they didn't ever do that. The only thing about them is the inclination to blob in front of the shared space (living room). But other than that, we got along okay, no cattiness at all. Not even when I scolded them for messing up my DVD collection. I guess for me, I'd prefer room mates that aren't friends - guys or girls.
  6. I schedule in do-nothing time into my Google Calendar. When I'm less busy it might be one day a week...or even 1.5 days a week...or even 2 days a week if my schedule permits. When I'm pretty busy, an hour for at least 3 days that week - this is separate from my gym time. I really need that time alone to reflect...maybe stare at a wall...or even lay in a patch of sunshine...and just blob out.
  7. Well, OP - he wasn't helpful to you, but the comment sure was cute! I'm a bit older than some of the previous posters too. I look about...well I look 10 years younger than my actual age. Unfortunately, many of my peers actually think I am this young at first glance and are condescending. That is usually corrected once I put them in their place. I felt mature before entering grad school. Before reaching young adult age, I was already responsible...because I had to be. Between real young adult life and grad school...well, my life was put in danger by a close friend. In addition, I was almost a victim of sex trafficking in a foreign country. No one believed me, and no one helped me in my darkest days. I got over it, and I'm here now. In those years between the events and the beginning of grad school, I learned to forgive them and even hoped they could make better life decisions. Just to be sure - I also feel that I have matured quite a bit since grad school. One doesn't have to live harrowing events to become mature - you just have to be honest and reflexive.
  8. You can look to live in the surrounding areas on campus for cheaper rent - not with a large apartment complex, rather renting a room from someone who owns a home or there are homes for rent in which roommates share (iunno...like greenbelt, riverdale, hyattsville, landover, or even farther out like takoma park and silver spring). There are school shuttle buses so try to look for a place on a route. My friend (an international student lived really close to campus (on of the school apartments) our entire MA program and she paid 550 to live with 3 or 4 other people - while she got her own room, the boy roommate slept on a pull-out couch ::shrugs:: they made it work. If you are an international student at UMD - try contacting the Office of International studies, they can point you to organizations on campus that are set up to help international students find accommodation and support.
  9. ^ I got a piece of similar advice...not from my advisor but from someone I admire - don't take things too personally and value precious (honest) feedback.
  10. I get enough sleep - I need 7 hours or so. To function properly, at least 5-6. To look good, 8 or so. To be sure, sleep, health, and food are 3 things that I always try to keep in check. I socialize once in a while. Honestly, I'm a huge time waster. For example, I could be brushing my teeth and then walk out of the bathroom to check my email or FB...or filling in my eyebrows and then stop midway to make my bed. It looks like nobody else schedules in doing their makeup but that is part of my morning routine (about 45 minutes for hair, makeup, and outfit)...I make sure to schedule in everything from makeup...to walking to school on the scenic route...to going to the mall to waste time. So, I schedule wasting time too. I schedule the time that I may waste getting ready to go to the gym to the time I waste idling on my way back from the gym. I do things very slowly, including learning - if you are like me - recognize this and then learnt to deal. Meeting new people has become somewhat organic - that is, meeting people when I go out of my department to take classes; being part of a one hour a week language table as allowed me to meet new people; having a 10 hr a week part-time job has created a different professional network - these are all spaces to get to know others.
  11. Hm. So what is the big...deal? The situation does not really seem to be different from being attracted to a co-worker or a boss much. I think it's good to recognize the attraction and appreciate their attractive good looks FROM A SAFE DISTANCE. --> assuming you still want to be with your SO.
  12. For the NSF and Ford - I believe, you must be tenured for the Ford in the first year, but for the NSF - not sure. I read somewhere you'd have to stagger the awards so they do not overlap in order to receive both. I just got my comments back - for the publications I have one good and one poor - that is weird because I don't have a single publication to my name. LOL
  13. Oh, well. With a check mark review - no wonder why it got back so quickly. How can someone give a "poor" for publications? Don't you either have them or not?
  14. NavyMom that will depend on your department atmosphere, which might also be field dependent. I've noticed that Business grad students are certainly better dressed than the Archaeology grad students :-) Also, if you are TAing or have another job on campus in which you must look professional. I think that SOME grad students are at least not as grubby (note: huge sweatpants and sweatshirts) as SOME undergrads. I think there are clothing threads for grad students too if you are looking for suggestions - but I don't know how to share those threads.
  15. I knew they'd be out soon...still waiting for news. Oh noes...should I be worried?
  16. I have a go to breakfast...does that count as a quick meal? I really like avocado so I slice one in half, slap that 1/2 on a piece of toasted sliced high fiber bread, and sprinkle a little sea salt and pepper on top. If I'm more hungry I scramble eggs (with sriracha, white pepper, parsley...green onions...whatever is in reaching distance...actually so it depends sometimes) and put that on the toast with the avocado. I guess for some that is a snack. But I'm full. I am trying to give up ramen...but darn it I'm missing spicy chicken ramen topped with a soft boiled egg (or 2, I really like eggs), sauteed beef stew meat, and chopped celery or broccoli (don't forget the sriracha and lime juice haha). But like some others, I generally like to have sliced, prepped, and portioned out parts of different salads ready to be mixed. Sometimes my quick meals are as simple as rice with 2 fried eggs and soy sauce, or rice with a baked Chinese sausages and kimchi on the side. And then there is congee withh shredded pork, spicy tofu, and sweet/sour pickled veggies on the side. I've decided to move away from rice for the next few months for personal reasons...so I have not had these for some time. Darn, I think I should not have written anything. But I'm taking that chick pea salad guide :-D
  17. That must be some awesome ramen!
  18. I just sent an email to the common address : infofell@nas.edu The other email address that was used to send to us, I think, re-routes to that one. Hopefully, someone who has gotten feedback before can offer insight.
  19. Personally, I will have to look for an outside job in addition to a graduate assistantship. Those school stipends don't cut it for real world bills. my own or my families that I contribute to also ::shrugs:: it is what it is...so I have to look for TWO JOBS lol I am looking for paid research opportunities around campus. However, anybody got any tips on how to get a job that one can do remotely - such as a test scoring job? Or a similar type job? I also live in a place where Winter is around for 8 months out of the year and will be without a car. I could probably take out loans...but that would be more bills to look forward to after I graduate.
  20. Dang...3 months? Well some feedback is better than no feedback, I guess. I wish they'd update the lists quicker so I can congratulate the winners from my school that I know (and ask to see their applications LOL)...or keep quiet.
  21. Werd. Stay positive! Saw the email, told my friends, then sent an email to Ford requesting feedback. Put it back on my list of Fellowships and Scholarships with some thoughts on what I might do to improve my application for next year. Maybe you should talk to your advisor if you still feel down. You know...we can't know how often the winners have faced the same thing...actually, I looked at some of the people on the lists, lots of repeat applicants who tried and tried again. Some never got the predoctoral but then got the dissertation, and then some got both lol the predoctoral awardee that gave me tips on my application said they got nothing the first time, and then got the award the second time <-- if i'm lucky, I could be like that, but if I'm not I'd still be me :-D doing good things in my field.
  22. LOL I just got my letter too! Well...next year Ford, next year. We can ask for feedback, right? Now I must wait for my next fellowship news.
  23. lol but the flip side of that is even with a 15-20 lb weight gain, you can still fit into your clothes despite the difference.
  24. No, just normal LOL
  25. LOL that's fine, I'm not judging - I just don't want people to be upset and my posts mean to be uplifting!! On another note, looking at the helpful directory that was just posted...so few people in Education get the Ford. Hmm, curious. --- Are other people able to look at their application online? I cannot, just wondering if its normal.
