I can't find anything in a decent area that comes out to less than $650 when including utilities and the fact that I must park my car :T University housing seems to be a decent deal but quite competitive. All the people on Craigslist seem super-friendly, but then that gets on my nerves because I am a quiet person who keeps to myself and has strange rules about personal space hahaha If push comes to shove you two, let's just get a temp place together lol just disregard what I just wrote about being strange.

^ Everyone just tells me Craigslist or cdliving.com In regard to roommates or not, well that is a personal preference. You can probably save more money with a roomy. But I personally needs space, so I am looking for a studio/one bedroom. I feel a bit butthurt at the prices is Madison.

hahaha I am supposed to have "incoming priority" too...but alas no news.

The other side of being accepted....shopping and planning the trip! :D

I've been apartment hunting and...well, I don't find apartment hunting very exciting lol However, after apartment hunting, I plan to update certain parts of my wardrobe and THAT is exciting to look forward to doing -
^ hahaha I am in the same boat as you are. I am looking at small studios/efficiencies online since I am not in the immediate Madison area either. I am supposed to send what I think is feasible to a nice senior member of the program I am in, but I am at a loss as of what to send her---can't overload her either because that would be impolite. I am more interested in living in the near East downtown area, but I am not wed to this location. I am avoiding the bigger complexes and management properties and choosing to send out emails to smaller complexes/owner managed properties from craigslist. But so far, no one has been able to send me pictures :T yellow.wallpaper, I've been reading about the ratings too---well, I haven't been taking them exceptionally seriously since it is mostly people who are disgruntled that have the most energy to vent online---that's not to say I would poo poo completely negative ratings. If something sound serious, I'd avoid them too. I applied for university housing because of the potential freebies, and I have a car...so it has been a pretty major bump to get over in looking for housing---could cost me potentially around $50-95 just to park my car! I've emailed just one person from craigslist as a potential roommate, but alas, no response. I am wondering if my budget of $700 is too LOW.

Does anyone have a ballpark idea of how long the waitlist could be for university housing? I am waiting as a single student with no dependents while simultaneously trying to secure housing in other ways. I've never been a renter (in the USA), so it kind of sucks to be doing it out of state. I still have to hold down a job lol but at least I have no dependents, right?

Is there a Meet and Greet 2013 thread? I'd love to know how others are doing who are going to UW-Madison in the fall, especially in regard to securing housing Which I am peronally struggling with haha
-
I have been monitoring this thread and thank all you guys who have contributed so far! I have also decided to attend the UW-Madison as a PhD student in the upcoming fall. I have used the university's apartement located and have been quietly trolling Craigslist lol. Frankly, I am still a bit nervous about reaching out to some of the folks on the internet. I am currently waiting for another current graduate student to respond to me plea for help lol I am wondering how people here have found their roommates? I would only consider one other person to live with or to rent out a studio. I am a private person who keeps to myself...but once and a while, it is nice to come home to a NOT empty home. I am sort of dreading this entire renting/looking for shelter in a different state sort of thing. :T I hate winter weather, but I am gonna be a big girl and suck it up.

^ Oh, I didn't know that.

I also got the invites from the schools. Usually don't they have a reimbursement option available to you? It is usually a small stipend.
-
I checked my application: nada junk mail: nothing also lol It would be nice to know where we stand, right?

I had a 2.9 GPA in undergraduate and a 3.8 in graduate school. My GREs were not high at all - 470 Quant and 680 Verbal with 5.0 AW. I got into 2 schools. Not Stanford lol but I am in 2 out of my top 3 choices.
-
I got my rejection email from Stanford!!! I don't mean to be overly excited about this, but I'd rather know where I stand sooner better than later Best wishes to everybody else!

bump for 2014 peep Hey all, I am wondering if it's worth it to consider bringing my car. I have never been to Madison and wonder about living in the downtown...and where is that? This is the beginning of my search, I read throught the thread but there is only 8 pages after all.

I just heard from Wisconsin-Madison yesterday. I don't think I'll be getting anymore admits lol Good luck everyone!

Oh, such very helpful information. I am sort of attached to my car and was worried about taking it with me. I probably might still for late nights. YOU NEVER KNOW! I am woman looking to live alone (bad experiences with roommates) so there are issues of safety and such that I worry about. I am mostly worried about access to food and the gym---I am an active meditator.
-
I didn't either, but good luck! This was not one of my top schools (field not prestige lol), but I'd love to hear how it goes

I heard (I hope I am not recalling incorrectly) that the doctoral deadline for recommedators is January 19th or so. One of my recommendators had a problem with the Stanford system and emailed them hahaha

Did anyone get an invite to the Education, Culture, and Society PhD program? I didn't, but I'd be really happy for anyone who did
-
I just got an acceptance from here and considering visiting in February. Anyone still at the University can tell me where I should go or visit while I am there? I will probably only be there for a weekend or 2-3 days. Anyone else got accepted who wants to hang out? I promise I am normal.

I am local to the area and I would say that Kevin1990 is pretty spot on. There are crime alerts that you can sign up for that are sent out by the University. Most of the times, you will notice that it is usually drunk students or solitary students walking around between 1:00 am to 4:00 am who are getting mugged. Well, there have been isolated incidents where students have been caught off guard between 7 to 8 pm but those are rare. Frankly, I've gotten my bike stolen...a couple of times by kids in the neighborhood and...and some college students but that is as serious as I've experience. I've been in the area for 26 years so there is not a lot I am scared of. I live in a residential area about 8 minutes driving from the campus so I can tell who is local and who is not...so can my neighbors. College Park is most def a college town...as in most of the town is the University of Maryland. If you are a doc student, consider getting a car because you might be here for a while and there is much to see in the DMV area if you have a car.

That email totally ruined any sympathy I might have toward a student emailing about their grade. What is that "given you a verbal warning" schtick? You warned your instructor? I've had students that try to negotiate me---but that is quite alright as long as they do in an appropriate matter. I still shake my head at that email.
