  1. haha no worries, congrats! Rice is a great school and it's gorgeous plus Houston is awesome!!
  2. It looks like it only applies if your acceptance includes an offer of financial support https://cgsnet.org/ckfinder/userfiles/files/CGSResolution_Nov2019Revision.pdf
  3. I considered retaking as well because of the exact reason you stated- they stress very high specific minimum scores. I had good verbal and writing scores but did very poorly on the math and was still accepted to the MA program. Of course I'm sure the PhD program is more competitive, but as long as you have strong verbal and essay scores I wouldn't worry about it.
  4. completely agree. They gave me 3 weeks to decide and now the campus is closed...seems messed up.
  5. Yeah I haven't heard anything either and I am not holding my breath. Best of luck to you!
  6. Columbia was my first choice and I feel that it will be a good fit, but seeing as how it is ridiculously expensive I want to know as much as I can before making the leap so that I can feel confident in my decision and feel like it's worth the cost. What are things your love and hate about Columbia? What are the pros/cons compared to other programs or name recognition? Is Williams thought of as far superior or are they both regarded with the same respect? What did you wish you had known before attending? I know MA students get to select an advisor for their thesis, but do they get an advisor/mentor before then? Any other tips are much appreciated?
  7. I have heard back from a couple schools and one wants an answer in a couple of weeks even though I just found out a week ago. I am still waiting to hear from other schools, mostly for financial reasons. The school with the quick deadline definitely does not have aid and I am afraid that I will make myself a target if I ask other schools about their decision and tell them that I have already received acceptances. I don't want to make things worse, but I also have to decide ASAP? Has anyone else had experience with this situation??
  8. Unfortunately my option did not require students to interview, so I don't have specifics. I would just be sure to re-read your statement and be prepared to discuss your research interests and how their program is aligned with these. Best of luck to you!!
  9. Schools will still be able to view all the classes you took and I provided a list of relevant coursework to put everything together for them and attached it as a supplemental document when available. I would say if you have a stellar gpa right now,e ven though a B- is still an ok grade, are you concerned about it being factored into your Major GPA or just in general as in you would drop the class? I did not do an official art history minor, i just took enough classes to fulfill it so i don't think they will care all that much about formailites if they see you have a certain amount of experience with that language. They also have a section on apps where you get to list all your lanugages and your current fluency levels and you then sometimes list the specific language courses under there. Hopefully this helps, sounds like you will finish with a stellar transcript either way, congrats on your hard work!
  10. Yes I heard back earlier than expected, but from what I understand it depends on which options you applied to. - I got into History of Dress but am debating this over a USA program, but I am torn! Congrats to everyone on their acceptances
  11. this is awesome, thank you!!!
  12. Tuition funding
  13. Hey I have been having trouble finding legit lists of grad school scholarships that we humanities students are eligible for. Anyone have any good links?
  14. ETS grading rubric is very weird and specific. To people still looking for help on this I would look at prep course youtube videos on the essay sections. Also try out the ETS GRE essay grading service, it's $20 per essay but it will be scored like the real thing.
  15. Applying to art history MA programs (mod/contemp) and I have two papers I am torn between for my writing sample. I would greatly appreciate any feedback on either. I would be happy to do the same for you! Let me know if you are interested and we can send each other our work in messaging!
  16. That would be great, I'm down! I am really struggling to keep things tight and specific and to "show my intellectual profile" as my prof suggested and Columbia is due on the 12th ah! I'll message it over
  17. I would recommend sending the scores in which your verbal/essays are highest since this is the type of program you are applying to. I am in a similar situation as I did well on the verbal but TERRIBLY on the math and now it is too late for me to retake them for this application cycle, but seeing as I am applying to a humanities masters programs I am hoping that their primary focus will be on the high verbal score. Maybe give yourself a break and focus on other areas of your application that they will probably put more weigh on like your writing sample and SOP. Worst case scenario you can always take it again NEXT cycle if you don't get in anywhere, but I doubt that you'll need to as you have a great GPA and recs! I wouldn't worry too much about your GRE scores, they really are not bad at all, if you saw my math score you would laugh! Best of luck, I'm sure your applications will be strong!
  18. Along this line, do you have any advice on translated transcripts? Some schools state that if you have transcripts from a foreign country that you need to have them translated, but does this apply even if your home institution was in the US and if your study abroad transcript came with a key? It's so unclear on admissions pages.
  19. Hi Chernline, I am also having the same issue! I am applying to MA programs with a focus in modern and contemporary AH, but it is really tough to find any samples and I want to be sure that I am doing things correctly! Columbia is my first choice and one of my profs who is writing my recs went there awhile back and advised to focus on mostly conceptual research interests. Is this true? I don't know how specific to be and how to go about outlining these interests. I have already put a lot of time into my statement but I still feel like it needs work. Ian Takaes, would you be willing to also send me these statements to look over?
  20. I am having a similar issue, I had to withdraw twice as well because I missed so much class due to medical issues and I don't know how to bring it up without it sounding like an excuse. Some of the schools I am applying to allow you to write a short secondary statement explaining any additional info, esp explanations that are not included in your statement. While I think it would be worth it to briefly mention how much this type of intervention helped your condition seeing as how it is directly related to the lab you want to be involved with, I would see if you could have the bulk of your explanation of its affects be in a separate statement if possible. My issues were not directly related to the field I'm pursuing so it will be tricky, but I think I am just going to try to keep it general since it's so personal and want the focus to be on eventually overcoming it, not that I was originally a lackluster student. Good luck!
  21. Hi, I have research interests pertaining to both contemporary and older art history. Columbia has two great programs, but I also see that they only have about 4 contemporary/modern faculty. Any insights into if one program is more competitive than the other or any experience with in either of the programs?
  22. I received a BFA in 2014 from a good school and am starting to apply to grad schools for art history, however I am afraid that I am applying to too many (esp in regards to asking my letter of rec writers to submit to so many schools) and don't want to waste my time if it is extremely unlikely that I would get in to these places. I have a 3.52 GPA, but I have a few transfer credits from my freshman year where I got all C's at another school (not being challenged enough so lost motivation and did not attend class even though otherwise my grades would have been good, also was super depressed) I pleam planning to take the GRE in a couple weeks and based on my practice tests I will probably do okay, but not fantastic. I am applying to some schools that don't require the GRE in the event I totally bomb. I took 7 art history courses but did not do the official minor. I have some museum/gallery volunteer experience and experience working at different art institutions. I am applying to masters programs at: Williams, UChicago, SAIC, SCAD, Bard, Hunter, U Washington, Courtauld Institute of Art, American College of the Mediterranean, Studio Arts College International, University of Glasgow but I am also tempted to apply to a few phD programs, specifically: Yale, Stanford, UC Berkley Give it to me straight, are these unrealistic? I can't find any real stats on accepted students' grades, if they already had a masters etc...also have multiple research interests and am having trouble with my statement because I don't want to seem like I don't have direction, but I also don't want to pigeon hole myself.... anyways any feedback is appreciated Also is it crazy to apply to some international schools that may not be prestigious?
