Anybody here considering doing American online SLP programs ?

Hey! I actually considered it a few months ago. I thought that these programs were truly 100% online and it doesn’t matter where your location is. But, when I reached out to advisors for some of the online programs, they had said that despite it being online I had to live within the state during the duration of the classes — I think it was for exam/proctoring reasons. I asked if it would have been okay to fly out for exams and she said that it wasn’t possible due to some volunteering/shadowing you have to complete.

If online is something that interests you, I would recommend emailing them to verify it’s truly 100% online. I just wanted to comment on what I found out while looking into these programs. :)

I spoke with Vicki a few weeks ago and she mentioned that she recommends we hold onto the letters just in case for next year (the department hasn’t made any decisions about next year’s admissions). This semester‘s grades aren’t considered for admission - our GPA’s were calculated based on previous semesters.

It might be different if you’re completing pre-reqs this semester. But they usually tell you your admission is dependent on you passing and completing the course.

This is what I know about U of A. It could be different for other universities.

That makes sense! I have a few more pre-reqs that I'm taking this semester, so hopefully it doesn't affect admissions. I also heard that professors don't have to provide letters, and that it is optional. I'm hoping that the department won't stress the letters too much.

Thanks for sharing that information! Stay Safe!

I've also been waitlisted and wondering how long the waitlist was. Did you see that on last years forum?

I also heard that 20 of the 58 seats last year were filled by people who were on the waitlist. Hopefully the list moves fast for those us hoping to get into UofA.

It was either last year or the 2018 forum! I hope you hear back soon!!!

Thank you for the info! Do you happen to have already taken courses at U of A? I was looking around and I think the planner may actually be a feature for students who have already been enrolled :P

Sorry! I should have mentioned, I’m able to view the classes available next year because I’m still a student at the UofA. I can send you screenshots of the classes/times or the info if you’d like! :)

Does anyone know what UofA is referring to when they ask me to upload "an updated transcript with the grading sheet attached"? What sort of grading sheet are they looking for? I expected my transcripts would contain enough information on my grades! Thanks in advance!

Did you end up receiving an email asking for an updated transcript with a grading sheet? If it just said it on the admissions letter but you didn't receive an email asking for the updated transcript with grading sheet, then you're good! If you did end up receiving an email, they just want the grading scheme, like the page that indicates that a 4.0 = A+ = Excellent etc.. Does that make sense?

I received my acceptance through email yesterday and my portal hasn't updated yet either! It still says it is in "pre-screening".

Congrats to everyone accepted and good luck to everyone still waiting!! :)

Thanks for confirming! I was a bit stressed over it, haha. Congratulations to you too! :)

Congratulations everyone! Mine still says 'Pre-Screening' feeling a little discouraged

Don’t lose hope!! There are people who are bound to reject their offers.

For those of you accepted to U of A did you receive an email or call? Has your portal changed?

    I received an email.

I got accepted to the U of A!! Last year I was waitlisted and felt so discouraged. If you don’t get accepted this year, just keep trying and don’t give up!

Congratulations!! I wasn’t expecting an acceptance because I heard that most people don’t get accepted the first time around. It was really nice to see that all my work paid off. :)

Can’t wait to meet you all in the fall!

    Hi Everyone,

Just wondering if anyones application for U of A has switched from 'Pre-Screening' to 'Under Review' yet?

Mine is still in the 'Pre-screening' still. I heard that UofA takes a while to review them, and send out offers. Someone had said that the UofA told them they were reviewing applications this week, but I don't think they've started yet.

This is also my second year applying! Last year I applied but I feel like it was a complete waste since I barely had the grades. Since then, I took some additional courses and also re-took some prereq courses. Like @SpeechPlease said above, I never stopped and I made sure I gave 100%. I also spent the year getting into research with neuro-imaging and schizophrenia (nothing related to speech really, but I took what I could get!). I also did more volunteering but made sure it was a variety - so I originally had experience with ASD/other development kiddos, but I expanded and ended up volunteering in feeding studies/videofluroscopy labs, a clinic for augmentative commmunication, private practise, and therapeutic swimming and equestrian camps along side an SLP, OT, and PT.

On another note, your application may be fantastic, but it mostly depends on the cohort of the year (how many people apply, their applications, etc). I know that we're all smart and we all deserve to get in, and it's frustrating when our application is amazing, but there's always going to be somebody out there who has a couple grades higher than us, or more experience.

    Hope this helped!

Thank you! This was very helpful, and actually gave me hope. I'm definitely going to look into more volunteering experiences. I completely understand the frustrations of having a great application, to only have someone who is slightly better be accepted. My GRE verbal scores are not the best, so I'm hoping they won't heavily rely on that. I guess I'm just super stressed because its the only school I applied into, because I don't have the option of leaving the province.

Thanks again, and I hope you get in!! Keep us posted! :)
