Hey! I took the GRE for U of A. I felt I did really poorly on the quant section so I retook it and improved, but that still only put me at the 34th percentile which I was really worried about. I got accepted to U of A and am currently in the program, and everyone I've asked in my program got around that as well. Some people even got in the teens-20's percentile rank and still got accepted. I can't speak to Dalhousie specifically, but it doesn't seem like the GRE is highly weighted. If anything, I think maybe they focus more on the written and verbal sections since the program is so linguistically based. In my opinion, 48th percentile is actually a really high score for quant (considering we aren't like engineers or math majors), so I wouldn't bother wasting your time and money to retake it! Honestly, I think for the most part they use the GRE requirement as a way to "weed" people out (I.e. some people see that requirement and don't bother even applying because of it), so it reduces applicants to people that will put in the extra work of the GRE or show they are dedicated to do whatever requirements to get into that school. Hope that helps!

Also, just so you don't make the same mistake as me, when Western says the maximum characters for the statement of intent is 3000 characters, that includes spaces!! So it really is only like 2 paragraphs. I wrote two pages and then had to fumble to shorten it to 2 paragraphs when I tried to submit it.

when to take prerequsities, low gpa
JennSed replied to Marciiiiiiiiiiiii's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Hi! When I applied, I had several courses that I hadn't started yet at the time of my application but was able to note when I would have them done by. I was still accepted, I just had to send proof later on before the start of the program that they were completed. However, I know a few people currently in my program with me that did not have their pre-requisite courses completed before their application, and they got rejected the first time. So in other words, you could probably take them later, but its best to take them earlier to increase your chances. I think it is definitely an advantage. It also depends on the school you are applying to (I applied to U of A so can only speak to my own experience). -
If anything, I think it is more of an advantage to you because you'll stand out having those hours when other people weren't able to get them. Just because they don't require it, doesn't mean they don't take it into account if you do have it!

I might be confused but I thought we do have two labs in the first semester? For CSD 502 and CSD 505?

I noticed quite a few people looking for someone accepted to U of A to share their stats so I thought instead of messaging everyone directly I will just share them here! My sub-GPA is 83% or 3.85 GPA (according to UBC's conversion scale). My GRE stats: Verbal 150 (60th %), Quant 149 (34th %), Writing 4.5 (81st %). For volunteer experience, I had 14 volunteer hours with an SLP, as well as volunteered as a research assistant in 2 labs at university. I also did a directed studies project and worked in a lab for that. I also had a little bit of volunteer hours at a halfway house which I'm not sure was relevant to my application but I guess the more volunteer hours, the better! For work, I worked with people who have brain injuries for one summer and at the time of my application, had worked with kids who have autism for about 5 months. I think my letter of intent also helped me stand out as I did a ton of research of all the profs in the faculty at the university to see their specialities and areas of research, and then specifically mentioned a couple of them by name in my letter as I had similar interests to their specialities so it just helped me stand out and showed that I did some research too! Feel free to PM me with any more questions Hope that helps!

Thank you so much for responding!! It just appeared for me finally! Was the course laid out so that you do everything (I.e. the readings) according to your own timing (other than assignments and exams) or did you have to be there for video calls on certain days/times to "attend" or did you have to submit something every week to stay on track??

This might be a long shot but is anyone in the pre-req online course CSD211 Child Language Acquisition at U of A that is starting May 4? I'm registered but haven't received any news on the course at all or how to access it or anything at all and starting to get nervous! I feel like I'm missing something, I would think we would have some information or at least something about what the course entails or how to access it since it is only a few days away?!

Do you mind me asking which school you applied to? Your experience sounds awesome and really similar to my experience going into the application process although it sounds like you have even more experience! My sub GPA was 3.6 or 3.7 so not like the best of the best but not too bad either and I was accepted to U of A but waitlisted for Western. As you mentioned I think it would definitely be beneficial for you to just take some easy GPA boosters because it seems like maybe that was the main part of your application that could be improved! But you definitely don’t need the best of the best grades to get in because I didn’t have them! Also not sure where you applied, but the biggest piece of advice I have is focusing a lot on your letter of intent (if your school requires one). For me, I researched ALL the profs in the communication sciences and disorders department at U of A and most of them had bios or talked about their areas of specialty/interest or research. I found a couple that particularly had the same interests as I do and made sure to mention them by name in my letter of reference and why I was so excited about the opportunity to learn under them. I also mentioned some other things about U of A I had researched so it showed I really put in that extra effort to do my research and maybe helped me stand out a bit too. Not sure if that is helpful because not all schools require a letter of intent but perhaps if you’re applying to some next year that do require it, it could be helpful. Good luck and don’t give up!! ?

That's so awesome!! Thank you for sharing your story!! Do you see yourself working more with children or adults in the future? I always thought I wanted to work with adults because I always felt I wasn't that great with kids, but then I got a job working with kids on the spectrum as well and it changed how I felt about it and increased my confidence working with them too so now I'm torn! I figure I'll get a better feel for what I prefer once I do my practicums

Just curious how you all decided you wanted to pursue SLP! Anyone care to share their stories? ?

Hey! I emailed them about this and this is the response I got. (It's pretty vague but I never ended up calling to learn more): Students who graduate from our program, even now, can apply to work in any province. Please feel free to give me a call to discuss the process.Kind regards,Vanessa Killinger Program CoordinatorSpeech-Language Pathology Program location: IAHS, Room 403 phone: 9055259140 x 27344 email: askSLP@mcmaster.ca web: https://srs-mcmaster.ca/slp-admissions/

I also received the official follow up from U of A today regarding acceptance! So it shows in my portal now the ability to accept or decline, and shows "Decision" instead of "pre-screening".
-
Hey, not sure about that person but for me personally I never responded to the first acceptance email I received Monday at all but I also received the follow up today! Now when I check my portal the status has changed to "decision" instead of pre-screening so I'm able to accept or decline.

I'd like to join a group if there is one!!

I know someone posted the stats for a few of the other universities but can't remember if someone posted for U of A. Does anyone know the stats on how many people apply vs. how many get accepted to U of A each year?
-
Not sure if this is applicable to you but when I scanned and uploaded my transcript during my application I scanned both the front and back sides even though it seemed like the back side was just a generic message in a light font and didn't really have any important information on it. But it had the grading scale on it for my university! So maybe if you didn't include that in your application that is what they're asking for? I uploaded a screenshot of what it looked like on the back of my transcript.
-
I didn't get the email but I also don't know if I'm checking in the right places. There also isn't a button to accept or decline my offer yet so I'm not sure if maybe it hasn't been updated yet?
-
My portal still says "pre-screening" and "decision pending"! I received and email with acceptance.
-
I got accepted to U of A!!!!! I'm so relieved and excited, I definitely thought I didn't have a strong enough application. It was my first choice! Congrats everyone! Fingers crossed to those still waiting

Thank you for sharing! Yes I'm not sure what else they would change with it? 3.84 is awesome, congrats on your hard work!!
