Holy shit this was the worst grad school application cycle in my life. In any case 2/0/5. Got into two backups but failed to get into UCI or U of U or USC. I have to apply again in 1 to 2 years for a PhD in creative writing. Apparently those folx want people who have a MFA in creative writing... so back to school for another 6 to 8 years. Will provide more details after this weekend. See you all in LA this fall.

I will have my final MFA decision this Sunday for sure. The results were unexpected even to myself.

FInally called up UCI's English literature dept this morning and was grateful to speak with their desk representative to discover my ultimate rejection. Two schools of acceptance and one Ph.D. program left to go. UCI will send out formal emails probably over the next 1-4 days hopefully so I can collect the pdfs digitally for my own archives.

I would definitely apply for financial aid via FAFSA if you are attending Columbia. TBH, I would avoid Columbia if you can. For your own political safety. In fact if you are intent on attending that school it's ideal to await 4-5 more years.

I would disrecommend any international student from coming to the US at all and point them to the UK or Europe while ICE officials are taking over airports and the rest of our nation under hostage and kidnapping random folks willy-nilly. There are fine art programs in the UK and in fact, as an American citizen I definitely would be looking at those as a better option in the meantime until our dumpster fire is over.

Publication history and experience actually DO matter if you are applying for the Ph.D. track in creative writing. Unlike the MFA, there is this expectation of professionalism and experience as a writer which is needed for a more rigorous pursuit.

Honestly in the end no one really cares about the prestige of your MFA program when it comes to publication or where you end up with your writing. In fact, the MFA is pretty optional for some people. The New School also has a wonderful track record of solid publications from their program. Although not like Columbia which is crazy large percentage of successful authors. Probably the highest percentage of folks who end up getting in trad publications.

Update and correction. I got exact word today that everything for UCI will be finalized by 3-25 and they are crazy busy contacting folks up to the very last moment. Apparently they got so many applications this year so things were crazy with them.

Do I have any shot at PhD applications without a MA in art history?

Based on today's atmosphere and one of my colleagues, I would recommend having a master's in art history to apply for a Ph.D. It is very competitive out there. I am getting my 3rd master's degree for creative writing in order to apply for a Ph.D. in creative writing. Crazy but we need this today. -
Did anyone accept any offer from ArtCenter? I am a former MFA person there so I can answer any questions.

I don't have definitive information here but from what I gather based on past data as well as talking with some of my connects. Also I had one of my persons who wrote me a letter of recommendation as a former Ph.D. graduate from UCI in comparative lit.
