  1. In case that it helps, below is the content of the notification. "The Institute of International Education (IIE) wishes to inform you that you have been designated as an Alternate candidate for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program for 2020-21.While you have not currently been selected as a Principal candidate, your selection as an Alternate for a Fulbright award is, in itself, an achievement for which you can be justly proud. Please know IIE has no way of predicting the chances of an individual Alternate’s chances for promotion to Finalist, nor do we maintain ranked lists of Alternates. IIE maintains Alternate lists until it is no longer feasible to offer new grants for the current academic year and will ONLY contact you if additional funding becomes available. You will receive no further correspondence on your status unless additional funding becomes available. It is important that you advise us immediately if you are no longer available to accept a Fulbright Award. You will remain on the Alternate list unless you withdraw your application, in writing, from the competition. No additional information should be sent to IIE in support of your application, as it will have no effect on your status. Please note that your Alternate status in no way prejudices your chances for success in future Fulbright U.S. Student Program competitions. If you are not promoted to a Principal candidate and you wish to apply again for a Fulbright Award, your application will be considered solely on the basis of eligibility requirements, merits, and the placement possibilities in the country of your choice. We appreciate your interest in the Fulbright Program. "
  2. I was notified that I am an alternate. They say that I will not receive any additional messages unless more funding becomes available. I guess that one way that more funding becomes available is by one of the winners declining. Can someone send me information about joining the Slack group in a private message?
  3. Today, I had to contact someone in the department in connection to something that has nothing to do with admissions. I have nothing to report, and I began to contact someone in the department only after my portal had changed, so that the one has nothing to do with the other. Since the last business hour of the month has passed, is @alkiviades or @Popeyyyessz able to share anything else about the correspondence that is quoted below? For instance, what in the email caused you to get this impression?
  4. Although I applied for a joint degree—which was reflected in my portal—now my portal only reads "PhD, Social Thought," instead of "PhD, Social Thought and ___________." The same is true of my applications in prior years—none of my applications to Division of Social Sciences are listed as joint degrees. This changed within the last hour. I don't know whether this means anything.

  6. All of the permanent, current, and local faculty make admissions decisions. Last year, there was a meeting with all of the permanent, current, and local faculty during the last week of February. But I don't know whether this meeting had anything to do with admissions.
  7. The Grad 20 has disappeared from my application. My POI at Berkeley wrote to me in January to inform me that he or she notified the chair of the admissions committee of his or her interest in working with me. I wrote to my POI last week to say that it looks like we will not be working with each other, thank you again, and we will cross paths at X in the future. My POI wrote back to say that, while he or she has not heard anything definite, he or she also cannot provide any assurance.
  8. Based on past years, it looks like as many as three and as few as one of those who are admitted to Chicago Classics end up reporting it to The Grad Cafe results survey. Chicago Classics has admitted at least seven applicants in each of the last five years: https://provost.uchicago.edu/sites/default/files/ProgramStatisticsHUMClassics.pdf
  9. just one of them: epistemology, metanormativity, philosophy of science
  10. for UChicago applicants: https://provost.uchicago.edu/sites/default/files/ProgramStatisticsHUMPhilosophy.pdf with there already being three acceptances, it is plausible that there are still nine or more out there
  11. How can I leverage my Fulbright so that I can defer my start to a PhD, especially at schools that do not have an official procedure for deferring?
  12. Oops, I am mistaken—that post was not from an international student.
  13. Division of Social Sciences has limits on how many students that they may admit. I don't know how that is determined. I do know that CST will admit six students in the hope that five will matriculate. I don't know anything else.
  14. Are you an international student? Because that post was from an international student, who typically receive information in advance of domestic students.
  15. Only the first one was claimed so far. The first acceptance was from someone who specializes in metanormativity, epistemology, and philosophy of language. First phone call, then email. That's all the info.
