  1. Thanks for the words of encouragement. I'm happy that I won't have lots of debt, but mostly I was just hoping to experience a new setting for a couple years, and then return to Milwaukee (since that is where my family is from). So, as of now, it looks like I'm in Milwaukee for life. UW-Milwaukee seems like a great program, and I'm sure once I'm in it I'll find my place, but I feel like I still need time to mourn Northwestern. I really wanted the Big 10 school experience, since I'm finishing my bachelor's at UW-Madison (Wisconsin's state flagship), and I love it here. UW-Milwaukee has a lot to offer and I'm trying to stay positive and look forward.
  2. I just accepted an offer at UW-Milwaukee, and will decline my offer at Northwestern. This really stings, because Northwestern has been my dream school for a long time. I didn't get any scholarships and I just can't justify spending $120,000 on a two year master's program. I'm sure UWM will provide me with great experiences and externships, but I'm still super sad.
  3. I was waitlisted at Marquette and will probably be withdrawing soon, but I grew up in Milwaukee, so I can talk a little bit about the city! I think a lot of people are pleasantly surprised when they come to Milwaukee. There's (usually) a lot to do in the summers, and there's a festival nearly every weekend down by the lake. Marquette isn't in the best area, but as long as you stay alert you should be okay (ditto for The Rave, which is where a lot of bands come to play- it's about 10 blocks north of Marquette). If you like sports, the Brewers and Bucks are both fun games, and they are generally a lot cheaper than in other cities. Let me know if you have any more questions!
  4. Hi, do you have an opinion about which one is better? I'm a bit nervous about jumping into clinical work right away, but I feel like it would be good to have as much experience as possible.
  5. Hello! I'm still debating between UW-Milwaukee and Northwestern (which I've made a post or two about, already- sorry). My main concerns with Northwestern are with their larger cohort size and, of course, finances. I'm interested in getting my CCC's, practicing for a few years, and then completing a clinical doctorate program. Northwestern is a program I'm specifically interested in, and it seems like they accept a lot of their master's alumni into the SLPD program. I know that where you get your master's isn't a huge deal, and that if I still do well in my master's and stay engaged, I could still get into an SLPD cohort. I loved Northwestern when I toured there for undergrad, and some of the electives/clinical experiences seem really interesting to me. This decision is so agonizing! My question is, if Northwestern's program is really something I'm interested in, is it worth it to get my master's there, too?
  6. Hey, I'm a senior at UW-Madison right now! I unfortunately was not accepted to the graduate program, but I've loved my time as an undergrad! I know Goodnight Hall isn't great, but it gets the job done! The clinical professors I've interacted with have all been great, and they really seem to care about their students. The academic faculty is also great! I can't speak to the quality of the program or give any personal experience, but from what I've heard from current grad students, it's a great program.
  7. Check your state’s ASHA branch! I know WSHA (Wisconsin) offers a few scholarships to students at Wisconsin schools.
  8. University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee: UW-Milwaukee CS&D Class of 2022
  9. Hi, thanks for your insight! I agree that Northwestern seems amazing! One thing I like is all the electives they have to offer, and being near a major city seems like it could provide some really interesting settings for externships. The other school I was accepted to was UW-Milwaukee, which is still a good sized city and could provide me with some great opportunities. I attended an open house in November and really liked what I saw from the faculty and the clinic. I guess I just feel like I'll miss out on something if I don't go to Northwestern. I attended a Big 10 school for my undergrad (UW-Madison), and I really liked the environment there. I'm just not sure if I liked the environment enough to go $100,000 in debt. ?
  10. I accepted, but we'll see if anything else pans out. I got into a couple other schools that I think I would also enjoy, but they are closer to home and part of me wants a new environment to experience! I just said, "Yes, I would like to remain on the waitlist. Thank you for your consideration."
  11. I know that the best advice is to go with the cheapest school, which is UW-Milwaukee in my case. I also got accepted to Northwestern. I probably would have accepted at Northwestern already, if it weren't for the fact that tuition is so high. I'm leaning towards UWM right now. My only hesitation is that I grew up in Milwaukee. I'd like to return to southeastern Wisconsin after graduate school, since my family and longtime friends (and my sports teams) live in the area. Being near Chicago at Northwestern sounds like a great experience. It also seems like they also have a lot of interesting clinical and research opportunities. I'm still strongly considering Northwestern because of this. For those of you who have chosen more expensive programs, how do you plan on paying back loans? Are you working during your programs? Moving back home after graduation to save money? I'd go to Northwestern in a heartbeat, but I don't want to be under a huge amount of debt for 10+ years. How are those of you attending expensive programs swinging it?
  12. Hey, sorry, someone else responded to a thread I made about ASU and said they emailed the coordinator! She said they're still working on applications and we'd hear back by the end of the month (which is frustrating, because I'd like to be able to make a decision). I would probably just express my continued interest in the program and say that I'm eager to hear back.
  13. I expressed to Marquette that I was still interested in the program. When I received the email saying I was waitlisted, the graduate school coordinator strongly suggested contacting to the let the program know that I was still interested. I heard nothing back. I got into a couple other programs, so I’m just making my decision based on the schools I got into.
  14. As long as you have your CCCs, it doesn’t really matter where you go to school! I would suggest going with the cheapest option, unless you have any really strong pulls to one school. All three are all great programs, so you can’t go wrong with any of them!
  15. I will most likely be declining Northwestern because of cost, but I'm going to wait and see if I receive any financial aid. It's a shame, because I loved the school when I toured for undergrad, and it's in a great location for me. I just can't see myself going over $100,000 in debt for a two year degree.
  16. Haha that was another one of my posts.... I'm just getting anxious! ASU is the only school I've yet to hear back from, and I'd like to make a decision about where to attend.
  17. I’m now just waiting on Arizona State University! I’m going to try emailing the graduate coordinator, just to make sure nothing was missed or lost.
  18. Great, thanks! I'll probably contact her sometime next week.
  19. I’m getting a bit nervous! Would it be inappropriate to email them and just double check? I know some people heard back in early February, and then some more heard back a couple weeks ago. I just want to make sure an email didn’t get lost!
  20. I’m still waiting to hear from UW-Whitewater, UW-Milwaukee, and Arizona State University! I was hoping to hear today, but I’m not sure if COVID-19 has affected any admissions committee’s ability to meet.
  21. Last night I booked a hotel in Evanston for Northwestern's open house on the 27th, and then this morning I got an email that it was cancelled and they would have a virtual session instead. I'm still planning on going to check out the area, since my hotel is non-refundable.
  22. Congrats on your other acceptances! I am still waiting to hear from Marquette. I'm glad I could help a little bit. Good luck!
  23. Hey, I can’t speak for the “quality” of the program, but I’m from Milwaukee and applied to Marquette. I went on a tour a few months ago, and the program seemed really nice! The graduate coordinator seemed committed to making sure each student had a plan that worked for them, and the on-campus clinic seemed really nice! If I’m accepted, I will definitely consider attending. I think “better” really depends on what you’re looking for. What schools have placements you’re interested in? What research is being done that you’re drawn to? Rankings don’t mean much, as long as the program is ASHA certified. Good luck!
  24. Hey everybody! I just got accepted to Northwestern today for their SLL program, and I was wondering if there are others considering attending! It was my top choice for undergrad, but I wasn't accepted (which is okay!). The cost is my main issue right now. Are there any current students on here who would be willing to talk about how they're financing their education? Or any aspects of the program they wish they'd known about before attending? Thanks and good luck to everyone!
