You'll be ok, I believe some of us can relate to what you're feeling but stay encouraged, I am sure nothing is wrong with you and big deal having to withdraw from a program on health grounds. You'll be fine. I hope this helps.

I never thought that I would be able to ask for a reconsideration more than once. This is very hopeful!! I was waiting to ask for reconsideration until I had more offers. Now I don't think I will do that.

Hey! I am interested in school social work as well, particularly in urban communities where mental health resources may not be accessible in schools. What drew me to Columbia rather than NYU was their research capabilities. I did a ton of digging on their professors and research work done by them, and there are a lot of interesting and exciting initiatives happening around school-based discrimination and other relevant issues.
NYU has great clinical capacities, but I think CU offers a more wholistic balance between macro while still offering a ton of clinical training opportunities (ie their DBT program). Personally, I think it is important to be macro and policy aware even if you are planning on doing  clinical, micro work, especially if you are working with historically underserved communities.

Hey- let me tell you a story (don't worry, swear its true lol). So now I'm in my early 30's but when I was 18-20 in college, in undergrad, I had the worst grades. I almost got kicked out twice due to academic probation. My dad had cancer and I was working three jobs- I frankly did not care at all about grades or school. I would blow off class constantly, for work usually, or because I worked all night and needed sleep, etc. Needless to say, my grades were horrible. Not only low, but I kept taking semesters off because I felt ashamed at my low grades, so I had lots of W's. This was in the early 2000's. So finally, at 23 or so, I went back. I decided I was done feeling ashamed and I was going to walk back into the psych department (I was a psych major) even though my professors probably saw me as a failure, and I was going to work super hard...and thats exactly what I did. I ended up with straight A's and a few B's in my final year or two years (whatever it ended up being). I took on 17 credit course loads and studied like crazy. I eventually had a few psych professors come up to me and commend me for how hard I was working. I then did a one year degree at UCLA, a few years after my bachelors, in marketing (post-bac) and graduated with honors (3.9/4.0 GPA). I then took a few non degree graduate classes, got A's in all of them. I then applied to Northwestern University for a masters degree which I am currently finishing up, and I have a 4.0 GPA. My point is- You've got this. You have SO got this. I know all too well how easy it is to look back at those old grades and think wow, I really messed up. But flip that mindset around- Look at how hard you worked later on to raise that GPA to a 3.8. Admissions committee's - everywhere you apply- will see that turn around and think wow, this person is determined.. look at that work ethic.. they are amazing. It would be one thing if you had bad grades and W's and never came back from it.....but not only did you come back from it, you soared  You've got this. From one former W's kid to another- you've got this.

From a career changer who went through the whole policy vs SW thing over and over and over....If you really want to continue your career in social work, which you said at the end of your post, then do that. You can always work in policy with a MSW..... You can never claim to be an MSW with a policy masters (I am almost finished with my policy masters at Northwestern and am jumping right into a MSW). The Heller School is awesome- I looked at them for a PhD in Social Policy- but if social work is truly where your heart lies, go for the MSW all the way, get that work experience, and get your clinical license. That will open up more doors, in social work, than policy ever will (for social work). Now, if you said "I dont care about social work anymore" my advice would be to go for policy, all the way. I also got into Columbia for Jan 2020- I declined- but I did attend orientation before I declined...so... I'm happy to answer any questions that I can answer for you. One other thought.... what about applying to a few more MSW programs, just to give yourself options, since you say you want to continue working in social work?

I'm so sorry to hear this, I got a rejection last week and it's definitely a shitty feeling. As so many people on here have said, graduate admissions can be volatile and aren't often a reflection of you as a candidate. This is incredibly cliche but everything happens for a reason and I know you'll find yourself on the path you were meant to be on all along.
Maybe this is irrelevant but I remember getting rejected from my ~*dream school*~ for undergrad and being so unbelievably devastated and thinking I would not be happy anywhere else (we love high school melodrama). I'm finishing up my senior year at a school I hadn't even seriously considered at the time and I cannot imagine spending the last 3.5 years anywhere else. I'm trying to currently use this experience as a reminder that a year from now, I won't even think about the rejections and just be grateful I ended up where I am.
Side note: Waiting to hear back from my current ~*dream school*~ so please hold me to this mentality if I get bad news LOL

I'm so sorry about that. That feeling sucks.
The whole application process can be really unfair because the admissions are just looking at us through a few pieces of paper, and we are so much more beyond that. I'm sure their decision is based on the limited information that they required from you, and you are a brilliant and competent person that cannot be defined by their judgements. Also, it is very possible that it's more about the school than it's about you. Like others said, maybe they dont feel that they have enough resources for you, or maybe the program is designed to fit with other concentrations.

I was told this at least 4 weeks ago and still have no news. I applied for early decisions, too. Just know several of us are in the same boat and have deadlines to meet, too.
So if it's 8 weeks after submission, they're overdue.

Congrats on your acceptance to CU! I have been stalking this group for a while but I feel like I have to say this to you, and this maybe helpful to some others who have applied or are preparing for their application. My partner used to be in a graduate school admission team in one of the top 5 MSW schools. Overqualifying is a real thing. Especially if there's a part in your application that asked if there are any other schools that you have applied to - they do look at this. Offering you an admission while knowing that you're very well qualified and have a high chance of getting in and going to a better school, give nothing to them except increasing their acceptance rate, which will impact their school range when they report it. Hence, they give you a rejection. Schools do not only accept those that qualified, but also those that are most likely to go to their school. My partner's team even did one round of "we want these applicants" - this consists of selecting those that are qualified for admission out of the application pool. After the first round, they reviewed everyone again but this time wasn't focusing on whether or not they're qualified but what are the chances that they will accept the offer. They were able to weed out almost 30% from those that are qualified. This makes their acceptance rate lower while increasing their accepting admission offer rate, both are good for school ranging.
Don't let this define you and your past achievements, you are simply just not a good fit for the school. I'm not saying that this was your case, but it could be a part of it.
    Good luck on everything!

    Hey Guys,
I have been following the thread for a while and I must say thank you for sharing something similar to what am currently feeling - in terms anxiety, indecision, having to wait, etc. I hope to be an international student in the USA by fall 2020. I am an international student in India and in my last semester of BSW. I have returned to college after many years away from school.
    - I applied for MSW at Columbia - waiting for decision (I will probably write them soon). Waiting.
    - I applied for MA (SID) at Heller School of policy (Brandeis Uni.). Accepted with 60% tuition scholarship but I have to accept by April 15th.
    - MA Policy at UNA - still waiting.
Please, can any give me relevant info or advice about CU and (SID) "Sustainable International Development" at Brandeis, plus considering that my situation maybe a bit peculiar (international student), I would really like to get into CU especially if they'll offer me fellowship/scholarship better than Heller's 'cos I really desire to continue my career with SW.
    Thanks
