  1. I know someone who went through the MAPSS program and it really is what you make of it. Since you're interests lie under clinical psych and neuroscience, make sure that there would be someone related to that field who would be willing and able to mentor you for your thesis! Most of UChicago's clinical people work through the hospital's psychiatry program, and are not always readily available, so it would be best if you had someone in mind who you could work with.
  2. Yeah, I think letters of recommendation from professors or supervisors with a PhD are more valued. At least one or two should be someone with a doctorate, but overall you also want to make sure they know you well enough and have worked with you long enough to write a good letter.
  3. The overrall climate among current faculty and grad students is something I paid a lot of attention to. How well the department got along, as well as how much you get along with your POI and their lab group is super important considering the amount of time you will be spending with them! Also, this depends on what your preference is, but I personally wanted to work with a lab group/advisor known to be collaborative (with other faculty within the department and within the specific field of study). Networking is such a huge part of academia, so having an advisor who already has these relationships established is super helpful. Lastly, I did not use this is a critical deciding factor, but I paid attention to what types of clinical experiences (including externships) they offered because I want training with a specific type of population.
  4. I think it really varies, but I went ahead and told mine where I'm going (especially since the researchers are in the same field). I think they like to know as well, as it helps understand why that program might have been a better fit
  5. They said I would here about funding soon, but did not give me a specific date. This is an R1 university and they often have different types of funding lines (RA, TA, fellowship), so I'm guessing it has to do more with where my funding will be coming from rather then if I get funding. As a note, their website specifically mentions that offers are not made if they do not have funding... While I'm still nervous, I feel like it makes the most sense to reject the offer from the other university and then maybe just wait to officially accept the offer from this one?
  6. Hi everyone! Do you think it's foolish to accept an offer before receiving an official letter (with funding information)? This school is my top choice, and has always been able to fund their students. I have received another offer from a different school, which is why I'm anxious to accept sooner rather than later (I don't want to be holding onto a spot that someone else would gladly take).
