2021 Clinical Psychology Applicants CANADA
aaapal replied to freudianslipintogradschool's topic in Psychology Forum
Some POIs don't do the preliminary interviews - as with all schools, so it really just depends (sorry if that isn't the most helpful answer) but from what I gather they are pretty standard in their process- 2,510 replies

Ryerson has started their prelim interviews and I believe are wrapping those up to prepare for formal interview invites from the admissions committee. York has not done any interviews yet as far as I'm aware, and I think someone on here had an interview at Guelph but I haven't seen much from them yet this cycle.- 2,510 replies

Yes. Guys, please try to protect yourself emotionally and don't consider informal acceptances or word of mouth as official until you receive something in writing. Last year I had made it to final round interviews, was the top pic by the POI but then wasn't offered acceptance because the university hadn't placed the supervisor at high enough consideration for a student. It does happen and it's out of your control so getting excited is amazing, over-preparing is great, but please please hold out until you get the call/email.- 2,510 replies

This could be PI specific though. Some schools don't adhere to a standard "prelim interview, final interview, acceptance/rejection" protocol so in those cases it depends on the supervisor and admissions committee.- 2,510 replies

Hi friends! Just your daily reminder that if you haven't heard anything yet that's completely okay! You're fantastic! Also, taking some time away from the forums is definitely a great thing for your stress levels especially with everything else going on. Go binge-watch that show, get some fresh air, and whatever else it is that makes you feel better. A watched inbox never receives an email, and remember that great things will happen!- 2,510 replies

Umm I think the standard is some sort of prelim interview, BUT that really does depend on the prof. I know last year some profs didn't even invite to the final interview day but did accept students. So, it definitely depends. It's all still quite early in the grand scheme of things so don't get all stressed just yet!- 2,510 replies

From what I understand, the official interview day invites have not been sent out yet (as the department is still doing prelim interviews) - info from a PhD student for the POI I interviewed with. Last year these invites went out around January 20th, and the interview day was February 12th - so I'd imagine to expect a timeline similar to this.- 2,510 replies

Hey! Yeah I can give some insight! So it was phrased as a "chat to discuss my interest in the program", but I was asked some formal interview questions. I was asked things like "why do I want to be a clinical psychologist" "to talk more about my research background" "why that specific school and/or lab" "What I want to do long-term in the field" etc. They are assessing fit throughout the whole process so that doesn't really change. In this informal interview they are now trying to get a glimpse of the person behind the paper. I would say it's still semi-structured and to still prepare some standard interview question responses. Mine overall went really well I think! (I had interviewed with them last year so specifically mine was more of a catch up and re-phrasing why I was still interested etc.) Hope it helps!- 2,510 replies

That all depends on the PI. Most will be okay with it I think - but I can only answer to my own experience. Personally, I always state whether or not I've applied to OGS or CGS in my statements so they know ahead of time. If that's the case and they reached out to an interview, odds are they are aware, and are still interested.- 2,510 replies

They had just asked if I had applied for external funding. I said that unfortunately I wasn't able to allocate funding to their program but should I be accepted I will most definitely be applying to both the CGS-M and OGS competitions. (luckily, the way they worked you applied for OGS once invited to the final interview round, so I got around that). It's kind of one of those questions where you can give a vague answer, but then affirm that you are very invested in research and will definitely be applying to funding in the fall.- 2,510 replies

Hey! This does happen so don't worry! Last year I didn't list a school for the CGS-M funding competition but ended up interviewing and making it to final round interviews for them. I ended up being top choice for that PI but they ended up not being able to take a student. So, it does happen!- 2,510 replies

Do we think it's okay to reach out to a POI before hearing back about interviews? (I have a burning urge to because the stress and impatience is killing me, but I also feel it reeks of desperation)- 2,510 replies

I mean, the prof MA have a student in mind but they are required to review the applications. It has happened multiple times that a prof took a student who wasn't the "student they had in mind" because the other person was a stronger applicant! Those things can always change so I wouldn't be tooo worried about it! And yeah, like someone else said, that student may be applying to someone else because if they are working in a lab with a specific professor, that same professor can't write them a reference letter for their own lab (if that makes sense).- 2,510 replies

Question for anyone here. If you're a reapplying to a PI that you interviewed for last year who did display an interest but wasn't able to take you, would that put you in a better position this round or does it not matter? Casually stressed as heck about this whole process haha- 2,510 replies

Hearing all of this about there being many more applicants this year is really nerve wracking. Especially since last year I only interviewed at 1 school out of the 13 I applied to. It's not like I could have upgraded my grades or anything so I'm kind of still standing on the same feet.- 2,510 replies

So, I think that as they're optional they can't make the decision to put you through to the "next round of consideration" based solely on your GRE scores when they aren't doing that to people who have not submitted them. They would still have to weight your other stuff like GPA, research experience, clinical experience, publications (if you have any), thesis, and reference letters just as highly as they do for people who did not submit GREs. I think for them to remain fair it would be like "submitting these scores may only help you" not hurt you. I could be wrong but that's my perception of this whole thing- 2,510 replies
