PSA for NPSIAns: If you go into Carleton Central, into "Build your Timetable/Registration", you can see what courses are on offer this fall by right clicking on the term drop-down menu, using "inspect element", and changing the "option value" from "202020" to "202030" (see the attached pics). You can also change that value to "202110" to see the classes on offer next winter.

(Note, this isn't my trick... I found it here on the Carleton subreddit)

I think they may have patched it - do you still have the schedule for Fall/Winter?

My status just changed from "recommended for assessment" to "review in progress by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs" and my specialization was updated in Carleton Central. Should I take this as a positive sign? How long is it usually in this status before a decision is made?

You should recieve acceptance within a few days! If they give you your specialization you are in! Congrats

    Hi all.

I am an undergrad in my fourth year who is majoring in global development and during a minor in political science. I was looking at a masters and am interested in the munk school of global affairs. With my major, I was wondering, does it sound like a good path for me? What is the program like exactly and what should I expect from it maybe? I emailed them and they told me they are still accepting applications and I should aim to submit around early may.

My GPA is around the 3.5 mark, so I was wondering, is that too low maybe?

From my understanding they care more about the last two years. If you have a good average in lat two years you should be good. But I wpuldn't say 3.5 is too bad. If you need some help you can DM me

  4. Hey everyone!

I am also heading to Munk for an MGA this Fall.

To echo the previous messages  - I think by Fall semester Covid as a disease will subside, I think we will be dealing more with social impacts. I think by Fall the courses will go business as usual - but it may be an issue for internationals as visas may be given out much slower.

Regardless of that I am excited to start my MGA at UofT!

Congratulations to all the applicants, wherever you may choose to go. I initially joined this forum in 2015 when i was applying to IR programs. Having graduated from Munk in 2017 and working in the industry, I'd be happy to answer any questions and provide advice. Feel free to post on here with any questions or send me a private message as well. (Also i came to Canada as an International Student). I'm honestly here to provide objective information regarding any doubts you may have, based on the options available to you.

    Hello Atul,

Thank you for give us some insight.

Would be able to elaborate on your experience at Munk. Some upsides - what you enjoyed, what made you chose the program? What were some drawbacks of your experience? Also what were your thoughts on the internship?

Just got the email today for NPSIA! Super happy, now I will have to decide between Munk, NPSIA, and a very very appealing EnvStudies Masters at York... at this point it's scary to say I am entirely unsure which to pick... Also for NPSIA I have "Health, Displacement and Humanitarian Policy" as my specialization (I completely forget which order I placed my top three picks in haha but I think this was my #1)

Best of luck to everyone else still waiting to hear back! Waiting is no fun and I hope you all get into your dream programs.

Congrats thats awesome! What are you leaning towards?

Thanks so much! Any idea as to when the first round of the wait-list is usually conducted?

I don't think last years timeline precedent will work. Because I just got an emial from UoT saying if I want to get an extension on my decision they are happy to give it to us. So I think the second round/wait list people are going to be waiting for longer than usual.

Are you domestic or international student, if you don't mind me asking?

    Any wait-listed Munk candidates here?

Does anybody have a view on what the odds for wait-listed candidates at Munk look like at this point?

    Thanks!

Last year 2 out of 3 of my friends got in off the "first round" of wait list. Due to the prohibitive cost of munk many end up turning it down - so it was told to me

I am deciding between Munk and NPSIA also.

I am leaning towards Munk because it definitely keeps more career options open for you. The majority of Munk grads go into the private sector but you can also go into the public sector if you decide. If you look at the courses at Munk (i.e. Financial Management for Global Organizations, Capstone Seminar) there are many which are both global affairs and business oriented and make you more marketable for the private sector (i.e. consulting). With that said if you know for sure you want to go work for the government, especially the federal government NPSIA is probably the better option with their co-op and connections to Global Affairs Canada.

I just accepted Munk! I hope to see you there!

Side note declined all the other offers hope people who are still waiting will get their forst choices!

Damn... I'm not holding out much hope for getting mine then as I don't have change to my app yet.

I wonder if that is possible?  The students in the specialization would probably get first choice but I'd bet there is room for other students.

My app still says in review by the department but my specialization has updated to conflict analysis and resolution. Personally kinda bummed out about that because foreign policy was my first choice, dont even think I put conflict in my top five.

Wonder how typically people choose to not do the specialization at all and if it's impossibly difficult to get into classes marked with the field designation

I talked to a friend in the program he said the specializations are not that important. You have the ability to take all the courses, just those who have specialization usually get first choice but there always spots for everyone

    Hi everyone,

I've also applied to NPSIA with the hope of starting in September 2020. I submitted my application in November 2019 but still haven't heard back so I emailed and they said I haven't been selected in first round and they will now look at applications on a cyclical basis, until August.

I'm getting a bit nervous because my profile is a bit different from what is listed in the admission requirements.

I have a BCom, I speak 4 languages (including English and French) and have worked abroad and in Canada for a couple of years, mostly for NGOs. I'm currently working in campaign/advocacy around international development policies. I'm pretty confident about my personal statement and the references but my weakest point is my undergrad GPA (I wasn't passionate about what I was learning).

What do you think are my chances and how important is GPA in their admission process? Should I be taking extra classes to boost up my profile?

NPSIA is pretty famous for their slow process so I would wait. There are a lot of people who get-in in the later rounds. If you don't get in I would recommend emailing them and asking for feedback on your application. I did that last year and I got in first round. I think languages and a year or two of expereince may be secondary parts of the application letters of recommendation really matter and your Personal Statment.

I can give you some information that I was provided last year if you PM me.

    Hi all!

    Lurker over here :)

accepted you NPSIA and Munk. Question, do any of you knows what are the deferral policies of both program? Is it possible to defer admission for a year (i.e. 2021) in either of them? where can I find that info?

    thanks!

I would recommend reaching out to the admin of both schools, because it may be decided on the case-by-case basis.

I read a post about someone having a book published + a 3.9 GPA and still receiving an offer without funding. It's a little disconcerting --- but a huge achievement and I do not know what to do!

    Congrats to you either way!

    What are your other choices?
